2020 KEYNOTE AND PLENARY DESCRIPTIONS Keynote: Ken Cohen Keynote Title: The Way of Qigong: Ancient Roots, Scientific Branches Description: In the fifth century BCE Lao Zi, the founder of Daoism, wrote, “Returning to the root is called tranquility and the renewal of life.” In this dynamic talk, Ken Cohen will explore the ancient sources of qigong in Shamanism, Daoism, and Chinese medicine, and how qigong’s healing benefits are validated by modern science. Yet qigong is far more than a complementary therapy; rather, through its gentle exercises and meditations, it links us to the source of life energy in the universe, what in China is called “the original qi of Heaven and Earth.” It thus reboots the body’s entire healing system and restores balance and harmony. Bio: Ken Cohen, M.A. (www.qigonghealing.com) is a renowned Qigong Grandmaster, author of The Way of Qigong (Random House) and more than 250 journal articles, including various works in the Chinese language. With more than 50 years of experience, he was the first person to lecture about qigong in U.S. medical schools. Ken is the recipient of the International Lifetime Achievement Award in Energy Medicine. Chinese martial arts and Taoism has a long historical origin, this article reveals that the formation of tai chi means traditional Chinese Taoist culture having a clear external expression form, at the same time having bidirectional authentication method (inward regimen validated and outward fighting verified). When Chinese Taoists to Zhang Sanfeng, Inner life cultivation and life formed holographic deduction in the universe had been completed. Marking the Taoist introverted experience practicing was already clear and maturation. But the Taoist within the practice also needs external practicing avenue and intuitive form. Zhou Xuan Yun On Feb. 1, 2013, the Library of Congress of the United States hosted an event to receive Wudang San Feng Pai. This event included a speech by Taoist (Daoist) priest and Wudang San Feng Pai Master Zhou Xuan Yun and the presentation of important Wudang historical documents and artifacts for a permanent display at the Library. Wudang Wellness Re-established in recent decades, Wudang San Feng Pai is an organization in China, which researches, preserves, teaches and promotes Wudang Kung Fu, which was said originally created by the 13th century Taoist Monk Zhang San Feng. Some believe that Zhang San Feng created Tai Chi (Taiji) Chuan (boxing) by observing the fight between a crane and a snake. Zhang was a hermit and lived in the Wudang Mountains to develop his profound philosophy on Taoism (Daoism), internal martial arts and internal alchemy. The Wudang Mountains are the mecca of Taoism and its temples are protected as one of 730 registered World Heritage sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Wudang Kung Fu encompasses a wide range of bare-hand forms of Tai Chi, Xingyi and Bagua as well as weapon forms for health and self-defense purposes. Traditionally, it was taught to Taoist priests only. It was prohibited to practice during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976). -

3 Techniques of Dantian Internal Rotaion and Use of Meridians in Chen Family Taijiquan by Bosco Seung-Chul Baek (白承哲) B.S. Photo by Chris Soule Introduction Chen Family Taijiquan (陳氏太極拳: chénshìtàijíquán) is the mother form of Tajiquan from which all other Taiji styles are ultimately derived. The 9th generation of Chen Family representative, Chen Wangting, created Taijiquan from heritages of his past generations about 400 years ago. Unlike other Taijiquan styles, Chen Family Taijiquan still possesses explosive power (發勁: fājìn) expressed in the Cannon Fist forms. Authentic Taijiquan requires a harmony of 4 characteristics that are sturdiness, softness, fastness and slowness, and it is impossible to master Chen Family Taijiquan without these characteristics. Chen Family Taijiquan aims to acquire fangsong (relaxed and grounded) by practicing slowness such as Laojia Yilu (老架一路: lǎojiàyílù, Old Frame Fist Road) as it helps deeply relax the muscles, joints and spine while breathing naturally. Training with speed such as in the Laojia Erlu form (老架二路: lǎojiàèrlù, Old Frame Second Road) helps a practitioner understand the use of the fast energy exchange of the positive and negative force (yin and yang) to increase the power of one‟s dantian. If a practitioner practices with authentic instruction, he or she should be able to get the root of the dantian (丹田根:dāntiángēn) and control dantian internal rotation (丹田內轉: dāntiánnèizhuàn). Before these steps, it is required to open one‟s dantian and energy pathways so that the dantian circulates qi powerfully. In other words, the energy blocked areas in the body will be pierced out due to powerful qi circulation. -
