REPORT ON AUCTION 78 - HELD ON 16 APRIL 2016

The star of the show was Peter Drummond Murray’s print of Gooden’s exlibris for Princess Elizabeth – it sold to the USA for £510. Other items in the royal sphere were a rare state of Harrison’s plate for Prince Edward with an incorrect coronet (£260), two shields accollé for Princess Michael of Kent (£120), Mountbatten by Friend (£67), Thos Dunckerley FitzGeorge (£50), St George’s Chapel Windsor (£32), and one of the Duke of Sussex plates (£19). The tipped-in plates ensured that a special copy of BN Lee’s Bookplate Collecting in Britain Past and Present, 1991, sold for £220. Next highest in value came Beardsley’s Rainforth Armitage Walker at £140, JM King for McMillan £140, Hogarth anon armorial for John Holland and De Riquer’s fine coloured armorial for Alfonso XIII, these selling for £70 each. Robert Vyner of Swakely’s large arms went at £66, and two smaller early armorials of 1710 & 1708 for Scottish peers ran to £51. Gooden’s Courtauld and Baron Iliffe engravings fetched £56. Dominick Trant of Dingle’s Irish bookpile attracted bidders up to £48. Evelyn Waugh’s spade shield by Osmond is large but unimpressive, yet its hammer price of £47 was fair. Willoughby Norman by Rex Whistler was bought for £47, and another participant got the Sotheby’s catalogue of the 1906 Julian Marshall sale for £46. As usual there were some genuine bargains for members attending in person: John Bewick’s woodcut trophy for Sir John Smith, £8; Gordon Craig’s ship for James Pryde, £7; Wm Cornwallis, a crude early arm, £6; Bewick’s Armorer Donkin, £6; the fine Jac arm of Sr Robt Throckmorton, £6; and the large early arm of Thomas Foley of Great Witley Court, £5. The total sale value of £5,156 compared with a pre-sale estimate of £3,812 (this does not include the £613 estimate for 32 unsold items). Postal bidders bought 79 lots for £3,432.

Go to www.bookplatesociety.org/WebOffer2.htm to buy some of the unsold items and many other bookplates, all offered at fixed prices.

A non-member in Italy is writing an article about exlibris collector and historian Emile De Budan (also known as Emilio Budan) and wishes to locate and purchase a copy of a little plaquette (booklet) by Budan which was translated into esperanto with the title: Grafo Emilio Banerji, Historio, unua apero kaj disvastigo de la libris'oj, Ex-Kolektanto Revuo Esperanto aldono al Eltirita el "Weltwarte", Leipzig, 1908.
