Through analysis of material culture, historiography, and poetry that originated during the principate of Augustus, it becomes clear that each of these sources of evidence contributes to the public image projected by the leader whom Ronald Syme considered to be the first Roman emperor. The Ara Pacis Augustae and the Res Gestae Divi Augustae embody the legacy the Emperor wished to establish, and each of these cultural works contain significant references to the Vestal Virgins. The study of history Livy undertook also emphasized the pathetic plight of Rhea Silvia as she was compelled to become a Vestal. Livy and his contemporary Dionysius of Halicarnassus explored the foundation of the Vestal Order and each writer had his own explanation about how Numa founded it. The Roman poets Virgil, Horace, Ovid, and Tibullus incorporated Vesta and the Vestals into their work in a way that offers further proof of the way Augustus insinuated himself into the fabric of Roman cultural identity by associating his public image with these honored priestesses. -

Literary tradition credited the Temple of Vesta at the southeast end of the valley to Rome’s second king, Numa REPUBLICAN FORUM Pompilius (715–673), who had erected it next to the Regia, (508–31) his own residence. At the northwest end, Pompilius’ succes- sor, Tullius Hostilius (672–641), built the Curia Hostilia, the Established as a meeting place for the inhabitants of the adja- Senate House named after him, and, in front of it, the Comitium, cent, previously independent villages, the Republican Forum the outdoor meeting place for Rome’s popular assemblies. INTRODUCTION When Augustus came to power he made every effort to demonstrate his new regime’s continuity with the past, even claiming to have handed power in 28 and 27 B.C. back to the Senate and people of Rome (Mon. Anc. 34.1). He could not escape the reality, however, that his new monarchical form of government was incompatible with the political ideals of the Republic. At the same time, Augustus was attempting to reunite a society that in the recent past had been riven by civil conflict. It should be no surprise, then, that the new ideology that evolved around the figure of the princeps attempted to retain the memory of the old Republic while at the same time promoting and securing the power of a single authority through which Rome could flourish.1 The new regime’s relationship to the recent past was complicated, too, inasmuch as Augustus’ power was forged in the cauldron of the late Republic, and he was the ultimate beneficiary of the political upheaval of his youth. Augustus’ new ideology had to recall the Republic without lingering over its tumultuous last generation; it had to restore and renew.2 Augustus’ boast that he found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble as well as the long list in the Res Gestae (Mon. Anc. 19–21.2) of monuments that he either built or restored declare that the new topography of the city was an important component of this new ideology. -

Prophecy, Poetry, Myth, and History: The Prophetic and Poetic Role of Carmenta in the Aeneid No, Virgil, no: Not even the first of the Romans can learn His Roman history in the future tense, Not even to serve your political turn: Hindsight as foresight makes no sense. W.H. Auden, “Secondary Epic” W.H. Auden’s poem recognizes one of the most problematic interpretive questions in analyzing the political content of Virgil’s foundational epic, the Aeneid: how, precisely, are we to read the complex interrelationship of past and present that simultaneously creates a historical narrative out of legend and predicts future events as a result of that narrative? Rather than looking backwards as a historian, Virgil sets his text in the past and narrates his present as if it were the predicted future: the buildings on the Palatine, the battle of Actium, and the lineage of Augustus all enter the narrative as predictions. The figures associated with prophecy in the Aeneid are also the characters responsible for narrating what would have been history to Virgil’s contemporaries. The Cumaean Sibyl in Book VI, for example, is a traditionally prophetic character, but in the Aeneid she serves as a prophet only to the characters within the story: to the reader, she is a historian laying out the lineage of Rome’s past rulers. In order to better understand the complex relationship of past, present, and future, it is instructive to examine the character of Carmenta, Evander’s mother, who has ancient associations with both poetry and prophecy. In Book VIII, Evander credits Carmenta’s prophetic abilities with guiding him to settle at Pallanteum and, by extension, placing him where he needs to be to serve his role in guiding Aeneas to the site of Rome; her prophecy both predicts and creates the future. -

Theodore Peña, Chair This dissertation examines the evidence for burial in archaic Rome and Latium with a view to understanding the nature of urban development in the region. In particular, I focus on identifying those social and political institutions that governed relations between city‐ states at a time when Rome was becoming the most influential urban center in the area. I examine the evidence for burial gathered primarily from the past four decades or so of archaeological excavation in order to present first, a systematic account of the data and second, an analysis of these materials. I reveal that a high degree of variation was observed in funerary ritual across sites, and suggest that this points to a complex system of regional networks that allowed for the widespread travel of people and ideas. -

Conclusion 175 Bibliography 180 ii Chapter I Introduction This dissertation was born of an observation and an intuition; the former, that Aeneid book VIII is filled with bucolic imagery; and the latter, that this was such a patent and recurring feature of the text, that it could be no accident. After all, book VIII is where Aeneas comes face to face with Greek Arcadians, who were associated with the bucolic tradition from its inception. This line of research is important because it would explore how Vergil goes back to his earlier work and builds upon it. From these observational roots springs the basic organization of this work. Each of the next three chapters deals with an instance of sustained bucolic allusion in the text (the story of Hercules and Cacus, the grove in which Aeneas receives the Shield, Evander’s story of Italian prehistory and the Golden Age), analyzing it in terms of its intertexts and formal characteristics in order to develop a reading of the passage that takes the bucolic material properly into account. -

Their statues and stories were referenced by nearly thirty authors, from the second century BCE to the early fifth century CE. Previous scholarship has focused on the bravery and exemplarity of these heroes, yet a thorough examination of their monuments and their influence has never been conducted.1 This study offers a fresh outlook on the role the statues played in the memory of ancient authors. Horatius Cocles and Cloelia are paired in several ancient texts, but the reason for the pairing is unclear in the texts. This pairing is particularly unique because it neglects Mucius Scaevola, whose deeds were often relayed in conjunction with Horatius Cocles’ and Cloelia’s; all three fought the same enemy at the same time and place. This pairing can be attributed, however, to the authors’ memory of the statues of the two heroes in the Forum. -

Livy on the Founding of Rome Section on the Founding of Rome From Livy's History of Rome (1904), translated by John Henry Freese, Alfred John Church, and William Jackson Brodribb Founding of Rome Sections of Livy Book I Aeneas Leaves Troy To begin with, it is generally admitted that, after the taking of Troy, while all the other Trojans were treated with severity, in the case of two, Aeneas and Antenor, the Greeks forbore to exercise the full rights of war, both on account of an ancient tie of hospitality, and because they had persistently recommended peace and the restoration of Helen: and then Antenor, after various vicissitudes, reached the inmost bay of the Adriatic Sea, accompanied by a body of the Eneti, who had been driven from Paphlagonia by civil disturbance, and were in search both of a place of settlement and a leader, their chief Pylamenes having perished at Troy; and that the Eneti and Trojans, having driven out the Euganei, who dwelt between the sea and the Alps, occupied these districts. In fact, the place where they first landed is called Troy, and from this it is named the Trojan canton. The nation as a whole is called Veneti. It is also agreed that Aeneas, an exile from home owing to a like misfortune, but conducted by the fates to the founding of a greater empire, came first to Macedonia, that he was then driven ashore at Sicily in his quest for a settlement, and sailing thence directed his course to the territory of Laurentum. This spot also bears the name of Troy.
