Fourth Sunday in Pascha Acts 9:36-43 | John 10:22-30 May 12th, 2019 The Rev. John Forman Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up." Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner. “My sheep hear my voice,” we heard John’s Jesus say. “I know them, and they follow me.” From Revelation, John of Patmos gave us an image of Christ as the shepherd and the Lamb guiding a great multitude to springs of the water of life “from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages.” Just before that, we prayed what many hold dear as their favorite psalm: “The LORD is my shepherd...” In all the richness and familiarity of the readings for this Good Shepherd Sunday, one voice gets lost. -

Amstutz, KCCH Valley of Richmond Orient of Virginia October 1, 2007 “The Almighty is the great mechanic of the creation; the first philosopher and original teacher of all science. Let us, then, learn to reverence our master, and let us not forget the labors of our ancestors.” (Paine, 1794) Prelude The theme of the 17th Degree is that divine revelation is expressed in several religious beliefs having their origins in the ‘Orient and Occident’; and, that the Essenes believed it man’s duty to gather and mold these fragments of divine revelation into a harmonious whole (Clausen, 1974). The bringing together of ideas from the various beliefs, which was necessary for the Essenes to accomplish what they did, resulted from the conquering of Alexander and the subsequent multi-national use of the Greek language. Pike (1857) makes liberal use of the symbolism and words of the Book of Revelation in the 17th Degree ritual and lecture. The Book of Revelation is composed in a style which suits Pike’s purposes for the 17th Degree perfectly. Pike’s 17th Degree ritual conveys the events described in the Book of Revelation, imbuing them with Masonic meaning (Hutchens, 1995). The College of the Consistory synopsis of the 17th Degree states that beliefs originating in the middle-east held that a Redeemer was to come. According to Hutchens (1995) the Book of Revelation expresses the idea that the Second Coming of Christ will be preceded by worldwide catastrophe and followed by an extinguishment of evil. -

APOCALYPTICISM, ESCHATOLOGY, AND REVELATION 11:19 -- 12:18: CONQUERING CHAOS AND EVIL DURING THE APOCALYPSE by CYNTHIA ANNE MILLER SMITH (Under the Direction of Wayne Coppins) ABSTRACT This thesis largely consists of an exegetical commentary on Revelation 11:19 -- 12:18, the section about the Woman/Virgin Mary/Ark of the Covenant/Israel/the Church in the agony of giving birth to the Messiah/Christ/Anointed and the cosmic war between Michael and the Dragon who also fights against the Woman's seed. It contains a discussion of who the Woman is, who are her faithful seed, and how the text is a non-Christian Jewish original later redacted by a Christian editor, John of Patmos. Apocalyptic literature is described as a popular genre, found also in the Book of the prophet Daniel to which Revelation is related, that John the Divine uses to emphasize that Jesus will usher in the eschaton so that eventually Satan/evil is defeated and God/good triumphs. This passage is the focal point that holds the entire revelation together, and also functions as a transition to the remainder of the text. SCHROEDER University of Notre Dame Notre Dame, Indiana HE TWELFTH CHAPTER OF THE APOCALYPSE DESCRIBES A HEAVENLY WOMAN Tclothed with the sun and crowned with twelve stars. Together with the Bride of Christ and the Whore of Babylon, she is one of three symbolic women who ap- pear in the visions of John of Patmos. A fourth woman, apparently an influential teacher in the church in Thyatira, is regarded by John as a false prophet, a “Jeze- bel” (Rev 2:20). Each woman of the Apocalypse is unequivocally aligned either with God or with Satan. These female images are part of a system of symbols used by an author who speaks to his audience in code. The woman of Revelation 12 is the mother of a son who is snatched into heaven. She is persecuted by a dragon, flees into the wilderness, and there is nour- ished by God. This symbolic woman has been variously interpreted as the Virgin Mary, Israel, Eve, and the church. In actuality, her identity is multifaceted. This es- say will explore the many aspects of her identity, examining those which are de- rived from the Old Testament, as well as those which come from sources outside the Bible. In particular, I will explore the woman’s relationship to the dragon, since this will shed light on how we are to understand the woman. I. Summary The narrator, a teacher in Harlem, has escaped the ghetto, creating a stable and secure life for himself despite the destructive pressures that he sees destroying so many young blacks. He sees African American adolescents discovering the limits placed on them by a racist society at the very moment when they are discovering their abilities. He tells the story of his relationship with his younger brother, Sonny. That relationship has moved through phases of separation and return. After their parents’ deaths, he tried and failed to be a father to Sonny. For a while, he believed that Sonny had succumbed to the destructive influences of Harlem life. Finally, however, they achieved a reconciliation in which the narrator came to understand the value and the importance of Sonny’s need to be a jazz pianist. The story opens with a crisis in their relationship. The narrator reads in the newspaper that Sonny was taken into custody in a drug raid. He learns that Sonny is addicted to heroin and that he will be sent to a treatment facility to be “cured.” Unable to believe that his gentle and quiet brother could have so abused himself, the narrator cannot reopen communication with Sonny until a second crisis occurs, the death of his daughter from polio. -

The date might be 06/06/06, but no one is predicting anything particularly evil happening today. Unless, that is, you consider the slew of commerce to which we are to be subjected. Heading the slate today is The Omen, making a rare Tuesday premiere to take advantage of the supposedly demonic date. Thrash metal veterans Slayer launch the Unholy Alliance Tour tonight in San Diego; supporting artists include Mastodon, Lamb of God and Thine Eyes Bleed. And conservative pundit Ann Coulter will be haranguing readers with her newest screed, Godless: The Church of Liberalism. Of greater concern, officials around the world are on alert for outbursts of mayhem inspired by the date. In Carroll County, Liberty High School Principal Florence Oliver has promised to increase police presence and forbid students from wearing trench coats today to allay concerns from what she has called "unsubstantiated rumors" warning of "Columbine-like violence." All of which demonstrates the power of 666, the much-remarked-upon but little-understood number that is identified in the New Testament Book of Revelation as the "Mark of the Beast" - and has spread, courtesy of horror movies and heavy metal lyrics, to a position of general notoriety in the popular culture. -
