Fourth Sunday in Pascha Acts 9:36-43 | John 10:22-30 May 12th, 2019 The Rev. John Forman Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up." Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner. “My sheep hear my voice,” we heard John’s Jesus say. “I know them, and they follow me.” From Revelation, John of Patmos gave us an image of Christ as the shepherd and the Lamb guiding a great multitude to springs of the water of life “from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages.” Just before that, we prayed what many hold dear as their favorite psalm: “The LORD is my shepherd...” In all the richness and familiarity of the readings for this Good Shepherd Sunday, one voice gets lost. -

The earth opens its mouth to swallow the water that the Dragon intends to destroy her with. The Dragon then pursues her children, attempting to make war with them. Discussion Question #1 Koester notes that the woman in labor should be understood as the people of God, and notes, “Christian readers might naturally identify her with Mary… By the end of the chapter, however, it becomes clear that the woman is the mother of all believers…” (123) Is this interpretation of the woman valid? Why or why not? Revelation 13: The Beasts ● The Beast from the Sea (13:1-10): 10 Horns and 7 Heads and 10 Diadems. It was worshipped, given authority to conquer and was utterly blasphemous. Everyone worshipped it except those who were found in the Book of Life. -

Rhoades “It was 161 years ago today, on February 11, 1858, that the Blessed Virgin Mary first appeared to the 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous at the grotto of Massabielle near the village of Lourdes in France. It was the first of 18 apparitions. At this first apparition, Bernadette first saw a light, then she saw a young lady who she said was “beautiful, more beautiful than any other.” She did not know it was the Virgin Mary. Bernadette said that the lady smiled at her and spoke to her with much tenderness and love. She described the woman to others as ‘the beautiful lady.’ She was beautiful in every way, not just physically. It is hardly surprising that Mary should be beautiful, given that – during the last apparition on March 25th, 1858, she revealed her name to Bernadette. She said: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Is this not the greatest beauty of Mary of Nazareth, the Mother of Jesus? She was without sin from the first moment of her existence. She was preserved by God from every stain of original sin. We call her Mary most holy. Her holiness was perfect. That’s why she’s the greatest of all the saints, the Queen of All Saints. That’s the patron title I gave to Bishop Dwenger High School some years ago, when I gave to your high school Our Lady of Lourdes as patroness. The young Bernadette saw the beauty of Mary. -

An Apocalyptic Christmas Story Revelation 12:1-17 Introduction: 1) Concerning our text Eugene Peterson says, “This is not the nativity story we grew up with, but is it the nativity story all the same” (Mounce, f.n.15, 234). Peterson is right. There is no baby in a manger, shepherds rejoicing or wise men bringing gifts and worshipping. There are angels, but they are not singing. Rather, they are engaged in a heavenly war of eschatological proportions. No, in this Christmas story there is a beautifully clothed woman, a male child (“Son”) and a great fiery red dragon who stands ready to devour, to eat, the Son “who is going to shepherd all nations” (v. 5). This is an apocalyptic Christmas Story. 2) Revelation 12:1-17 tells us, in part and in summary fashion, the Grand Redemptive Story of the Bible. It is something of a panorama of salvation history. It tells us in fantastic imagery and vision the true story of the whole world. It looks to the past, addresses the present, and points to the future. It naturally divides into 3 sections: 1) 1-6 is the story of the woman, the male child and the dragon; 2) 7-12 is a war in heaven and song of redemption; 3) 13-17 is the satanic attempt to destroy the people of God and its failed project. This is a Christmas story unlike any you have probably ever heard! 1 I. God sent a Savior just as He promised 12:1-6 The story of Christmas does not begin in a city called Bethlehem. -

Let us, then, learn to reverence our master, and let us not forget the labors of our ancestors.” (Paine, 1794) Prelude The theme of the 17th Degree is that divine revelation is expressed in several religious beliefs having their origins in the ‘Orient and Occident’; and, that the Essenes believed it man’s duty to gather and mold these fragments of divine revelation into a harmonious whole (Clausen, 1974). The bringing together of ideas from the various beliefs, which was necessary for the Essenes to accomplish what they did, resulted from the conquering of Alexander and the subsequent multi-national use of the Greek language. Pike (1857) makes liberal use of the symbolism and words of the Book of Revelation in the 17th Degree ritual and lecture. The Book of Revelation is composed in a style which suits Pike’s purposes for the 17th Degree perfectly. Pike’s 17th Degree ritual conveys the events described in the Book of Revelation, imbuing them with Masonic meaning (Hutchens, 1995). The College of the Consistory synopsis of the 17th Degree states that beliefs originating in the middle-east held that a Redeemer was to come. According to Hutchens (1995) the Book of Revelation expresses the idea that the Second Coming of Christ will be preceded by worldwide catastrophe and followed by an extinguishment of evil. -

Revelation is a long epistle addressed to seven Christian communities of the Roman province of Asia Minor, modern Turkey, wherein the author recounts what he has seen, heard and understood in the course of his prophetic ecstasies. Some commentators, such as Margaret Barker, suggest that the visions are those of Christ himself (1:1), which He in turn passed on to John.3 It is the only book in the New Testament canon that shares the literary genre of apocalyptic literature4, though there are short apocalyptic passages in various places in the 1 Revelation is the English translation of the Greek word apokalypsis (‘unveiling’ or ‘uncovering’ in order to disclose a hidden truth) and the Latin revelatio. According to Adela Yarbro Collins, it is likely that the author himself did not provide a title for the book. Second Baptist Church of Doylestown Bible Study Notes 7-11-18 Revelation 12 Revelation chapter 11 ends with the announcement that Christ will now reign personally. Details, such as how Satan and the wicked will finally be vanquished are deferred until later and are not answered in chapter twelve. The vision of the seven seals has ended and John begins his account of another series of visions with his vision of the dragon, the woman, and the child. Christians in John’s era were suffering unbelievable persecution from the Roman Empire; in this new series of visions that begin in Revelation chapter 12 John explains the true origin of this persecution. The Woman And The Dragon – Verses 1-9 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. 4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.” And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. -
