Pink Foreword The contents of this book were first given out by the author at Bible Conferences, and then appeared in their present form in Studies in the Scriptures.1 As the subject of them is of such importance to students of prophecy, and as so little has been published thereon, we have deemed it advisable to issue them, complete, in book form. So far as the writer is aware, only two or three comparatively brief booklets and essays have appeared on this particular theme, though to their contents we are indebted for a number of helpful suggestions. Our aim has been to present as comprehensive an outline as our space would allow. Much of what we have advanced will no doubt be new to the great majority of our readers. Frequently we have been obliged to deviate from the interpretations of those who have gone before us. Nevertheless, we have sought to give clear proof texts for everything advanced, and we would respectfully urge the reader to examine them diligently and impartially. The subject is unspeakably solemn, and before each chapter was commenced we lifted up our heart to God that we might write with His fear upon us. To speculate about any of the truths of Holy Writ is the height of irreverence: better far to humbly acknowledge our ignorance when God has not made known His mind to us. Only in His light do we see light. Secret things belong unto the Lord, but the things which are revealed (in Scripture) belong unto us and to our children. Therefore, it is our bounden duty, as well as holy privilege, to search carefully and prayerfully into what God has been pleased to tell us upon this, as upon all other subjects of inspiration. Fully conscious are we that we have in no wise exhausted the subject. As the time of the manifestation of the Man of Sin draws near, God may be pleased to vouchsafe a fuller and better understanding of those parts of His Word which make known ªthe things which must shortly come to pass.º That others may be led to make a more thorough inquiry for themselves is our earnest hope, and that God may be pleased to use this work to stimulate to this end is our prayer. May He deign to use to His glory whatever in this book is in harmony with His Word, and cause to fall to the ground whatever in it is displeasing to Him. 1 A monthly magazine, true to its title. Pink Introduction Across the varied scenes depicted by prophecy there falls the shadow of a figure at once commanding and ominous. Under many different names like the aliases of a criminal, his character and movements are set before us. It is our intention to write a series of papers concerning this one who will be the full embodiment of human wickedness and the final manifestation of satanic blasphemy. Many others have made reference to this mysterious personage in their general expositions of prophecy, but so far as our examination of the literature on this subject has carried us (and we have endeavored to make it as thorough as possible) there seem to have been very few attempts made to furnish a complete delineation of this Prince of Darkness. We do not know of any exhaustive treatment of the subject, and for this reason, and also because there is no little confusion in the minds of many concerning the character and career of the coming Man of Sin, these papers are not submitted to the attention of Bible students. For upwards of twelve years we have studied diligently and prayerfully what the Scriptures teach about the Pseudo-Christ. The deeper we have carried these studies, the more surprised we are at the prominent place which is given in the Bible to this Son of Perdition. There is an amazing wealth of detail which, when carefully collected and arranged, supplies a vivid biography of the one who is shortly to appear and take the government of the world upon his shoulders. The very fact that the Holy Spirit has caused so much to be written upon the subject at once denotes its great importance. The prominence of the Antichrist in the prophetic Scriptures will at once appear by a glance at the references that follow. The very first prophecy of the Bible takes note of him, for in Gen. 3:15 direct reference is made to the Serpent's ªSeed.º In exodus a striking type of him is furnished in Pharaoh, the defier of God; the one who cruelly treated His people; the one who by ordering the destruction of all the male children, sought to cut off Israel from being a nation; the one who met with such a drastic end at the hands of the Lord. In the prophecy of Balaam, the Antichrist is referred to under the name of ªAsshurº (Num. 24:22), Ð in future chapters evidence will be given to prove that ªAsshurº and the Antichrist are one and the same person. There are many other remarkable types of the Man of Sin to be found in the historical books of the Old Testament, but these we pass by now, as we shall devote a separate chapter to their consideration. In the book of Job he is referred to as ªthe Crooked Serpentº (Job 26:13): with this should be compared Isa. 27:1 where, as ªthe Crooked Serpent,º he is connected with the Dragon, though distinguished from him. In the Psalms we find quite a number of references to him; as ªthe Bloody and Deceitful Manº (5:6); ªthe Wicked (One)º (9:17); ªthe Man of the Earthº (10:18); the ªMighty Manº (52:1); ªthe Adversaryº (74:10); ªthe Head over many countriesº (110:6); ªthe Evil Manº and ªthe Violent Manº (140:1), etc., etc. Let the student give special attention to Psalms 10, 52, and 55.

    What do we know about angels? For Catholics, angels are more than Christmas tree toppers. Belief in the supernatural appearances of heavenly figures is part of the fabric of our faith. But how much do we know about angels? Depictions of angels as winged creatures are ubiquitous in art, and belief in them is found across the Abrahamic religious traditions. The Christian conception of angels derives from the Jewish characterization as pure spirit, created beings that are messengers of God (from Greek angelos “messenger”) and were created before humanity was. Some have feast days, such as the three named archangels — Michael, Gabriel and Raphael — on Sept. 29; the feast of the guardian angels is celebrated Oct. 2. Churches, prayers and devotions are dedicated to these celestial beings. So what does the Church teach about angels? Where do angels appear in Scripture? Shutterstock Angels appear throughout the Bible in both dreams and bodily form: The Book of Revelation recounts a vision of seven angels with trumpets standing before God (cf. Rv 8:1-2). In the Old Testament, Jacob dreams of a ladder with angels ascending and descending (Gn 28:10-12). Angels are sent to exhibit God’s strength: An angel remained guarding the tree of life after Adam and Eve were cast out of the garden (Gn 3:20-24). King David and the Israelites were to be punished by God by an angel, but with repentance and sacrifice of the king, the angel relented in the plan to destroy Jerusalem (2 Sm 24). Angels are often sent for protection: In the Book of Exodus, Moses receives an angel sent by God to guard him and lead him into the Promised Land (3:2, 23:20-22).

SCHROEDER University of Notre Dame Notre Dame, Indiana HE TWELFTH CHAPTER OF THE APOCALYPSE DESCRIBES A HEAVENLY WOMAN Tclothed with the sun and crowned with twelve stars. Together with the Bride of Christ and the Whore of Babylon, she is one of three symbolic women who ap- pear in the visions of John of Patmos. A fourth woman, apparently an influential teacher in the church in Thyatira, is regarded by John as a false prophet, a “Jeze- bel” (Rev 2:20). Each woman of the Apocalypse is unequivocally aligned either with God or with Satan. These female images are part of a system of symbols used by an author who speaks to his audience in code. The woman of Revelation 12 is the mother of a son who is snatched into heaven. She is persecuted by a dragon, flees into the wilderness, and there is nour- ished by God. This symbolic woman has been variously interpreted as the Virgin Mary, Israel, Eve, and the church. In actuality, her identity is multifaceted. This es- say will explore the many aspects of her identity, examining those which are de- rived from the Old Testament, as well as those which come from sources outside the Bible. In particular, I will explore the woman’s relationship to the dragon, since this will shed light on how we are to understand the woman. I.     The Madonna and the Harlot: Images of Woman in Tanizaki Paul M c C a r t h y The Madonna and the Harlot— this is an antithesis that will seem unnecessarily stark and extreme to the modern reader, who may well ask, along with Denis de Rougemont (1956): What of the middle ground, woman as wife and help-mate of man? Let us begin by admitting that the dichotomy is offensive to the modern mind, insofar as that mind is liberal, humanist, and perhaps secular­ ist. Let us grant that even within the confines of the traditional Church, the ‘‘middle position，，is of great importance. For Protestantism, marriage is the natural and appropriate state of things, an aid to, if not a condition of, virtue. For Catholicism, it is a blessed state hallowed by the sacrament of matrimony, even if distinctly inferior to virginity. For Eastern Orthodoxy, the same is true: the lower clergy may be married but bishops are drawn only from the ranks of monks who are, by definition, celi­ bate, thus giving a certain pride of place to virginity while allowing and sanctifying marriage. But all this having been granted, it is still true that a number of critics, both Japanese and Western, have applied the Western Madonna/Harlot schema to the writings of Tanizaki Jun'ichiro (1886-1965). Eugene Clay, Chair Moses Moore Tod Swanson Michael Tueller ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY August 2019 ©2019 Shawn Daniel McAvoy All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT On the Antichrist (CPG 3946) is an eschatological sermon historically attributed to Efrem the Syrian. Composed in Koine Greek, On the Antichrist is not an authentic Efremic sermon but is attributed to the construct Greek Efrem, often called in the literature ‘Ephraem Graecus’. Sometime around the 12th century, Slavic Christians translated the work into Old Church Slavonic. As its goal, this study employs On the Antichrist to investigate how religions (e.g. Christianity) employ religio-cultural constructs and either refine, or redefine, them for new audiences and circumstances. To accomplish this, the author transcribes and translates one of the most important manuscript witnesses of this sermon (labelled Ov1), translates it, compares it with other early witnesses, and analyzes the differences between the Greek and OCS versions of the text in order to ascertain the variations in the versions and to posit why such variations might have arisen in the transmission of this sermon. Finally, the critical edition is interrogated to propose a date of the autographic text-form of On the Antichrist to the 6th to 8th centuries.     SAMAEL (CH – Sion/Sitten) Web: www.samael.info EPK: irascible.ch/de/releases/samael/hegemony 30 years of constant musical evolution – Over a 100 orginal songs composed and recorded – nearly 1000 concerts given around the globe. The band resurrected black metal in the early ‘90s, introducing symphonic black metal in the mid ‘90s and pioneered industrial metal later on. S A M A E L awaken the 14th of July 1988 when brothers Xytraguptor (Xy) and Vorphalack (Vorph) load their gear into an atomic bunker. Rehearsing seven days a week they soon record a couple of tracks and release their self- financed 7'' Medieval Prophecy, which infiltrated the underground scene through mail and small independent distributors. Two years later, the duet moves to Geneva to record what will become S A M A E L's first album. Facing refusal from the established record industry, the brothers finally ink a deal with freshly started label Osmose Production, which release Worship Him in April 1991. With the addition of Masmiseîm on bass the band played shows in France, Germany, Holland, Poland, Russia and Switzerland before heading back to the studio to record Blood Ritual. The first collaboration with Waldemar Sorychta and their first release on German ever-growing imprint Century Media. Ceremony of Opposites is released in February 1994. That album sees S A M A E L taking a turn in their approach of composition and sharing of duties. Xy got in charge of the musical composition while Vorph focuses on the lyrical content. In order to perform the new material on stage, the band recruts local Goth- legend Rodolph H to play the keyboards and be part of the line up for two consecutive years.
