Stjepan Krčmar U ovom radu je istražen kvalitativni sastav entomof aune na četiri močvarna staništa od me đunarodnog značenja u Republici Hrvatskoj. To su Park prirode Kopački rit, Park prirode Lonjsko polje, Delta rijeke Neretve i Crna Mlaka. Glavni cilj specijalističkog rada je objediniti sve objavljene i neobjavljene podatke o nalazima vrsta kukaca na ova četiri močvarna staništa te kvalitativno usporediti entomofau nu pomoću Sörensonovog indexa faunističke sličnosti. Na području Parka prirode Kopački rit utvrđeno je ukupno 866 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 84 porodice i 513 rodova. Na području Parka prirode Lonjsko polje utvrđeno je 513 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 24 porodice i 89 rodova. Na području delte rijeke Neretve utvrđeno je ukupno 348 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 89 porodica i 227 rodova. Za područje Crne Mlake nije bilo dostupne literature o nalazima kukaca. Velika vrijednost Sörensonovog indexa od 80,85% ukazuje na veliku faunističku sličnost između faune obada Kopačkoga rita i Lonjskoga polja. Najmanja sličnost u fauni obada utvrđena je između močvarnih staništa Lonjskog polja i delte rijeke Neretve, a iznosi 41,37%. -

Abstnet The male, female, larva and pupa of Culex (Neoculex) europaeus, sp. novo are described on the basis of the examination of material from Portugal and comparison with reared specimens of Culex (Neoculex) territans from North Carolina, USA. The recognition of the new taxon is discussed and diagnostic identitication keys to the male and female genitalia and pupa are provided. Introduction Culex te"itans Walker was described from the "United States" (Walker, 1856), but the type locality was restricted later to Charlestoo (Charleston County), South Carolina, by Belkin et al. (1966). Furthermore, Belkin (1%8) was mable to locate the type specimen of Cx. te"itans and consida'ed it "presmnably lost" and non-extent. Sirivanakam (1971) considered Cx. te"itans the most widely spread member of the subgenus Neoculex Dyar, since it occurs in both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. In North America, ex. te"itans has a very wide distribution to include parts of Alaska and Canada, and most of the contiguous United States except for several southwestern states (Darsie & Ward, 1981). -

DeBriere2, Satish Cherukumalli2, Gregory S. White3 & Nathan D. Burkett‑Cadena1* Recognition and classifcation of mosquitoes is a critical component of vector‑borne disease management. Vector surveillance, based on wingbeat frequency and other parameters, is becoming increasingly important in the development of automated identifcation systems, but inconsistent data quality and results frequently emerge from diferent techniques and data processing methods which have not been standardized on wingbeat collection of numerous species. We developed a simple method to detect and record mosquito wingbeat by multi‑dimensional optical sensors and collected 21,825 wingbeat fles from 29 North American mosquito species. In pairwise comparisons, wingbeat frequency of twenty six species overlapped with at least one other species. No signifcant diferences were observed in wingbeat frequencies between and within individuals of Culex quinquefasciatus over time. This work demonstrates the potential utility of quantifying mosquito wingbeat frequency by infrared light sensors as a component of an automated mosquito identifcation system. Due to species overlap, wingbeat frequency will need to integrate with other parameters to accurately delineate species in support of efcient mosquito surveillance, an important component of disease intervention. Mosquitoes are vectors of causative agents for numerous diseases, including malaria, flariasis, dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and encephalitis, ultimately resulting in more than one million deaths annually1 and enormous economic losses through the costs of vaccinations, vector controls, and trade embargoes2. Te recent Zika virus outbreak in Latin America cost approximately USD 18 billion from 2015 to 20173. -

PEYTON4 During the course of a light-trap mosquito survey in Panama, we had the opportunity of examining over nine thousand specimens of Uranotaenia and became impressed with the difficulties involved in the identification of the different species due to the inadequacy of the available treatises on the American species of the genus. Dyar (1928) published the last truly comprehensive work on the New World species of this interesting group of culicine mosquitoes and since that date only scattered descriptions of new species have appeared in the literature with the exception of Lanes’ (1943) attempt to bring up to date the information on South American species and the excellent publication by Pratt (1946) on the three species known to occur in Puerto Rico. At present, Dyars’ work is completely out of date due to the addition of many new species since its publication, to the inaccuracy of his descriptions and figures of the male terminalia and to the almost complete lack of information on the immature stages, and Lanes’ publication is incomplete and has the disadvantage of lacking keys for the separation of the different species. Thus the American species of Uranotaenia are evidently in need of a complete revision in the light of present day knowledge of the genus. -

MOSQUITOPIA This edited volume brings together natural scientists, social scientists and humanists to assess if (or how) we may begin to coexist harmoniously with the mosquito. The mosquito is humanity’s deadliest animal, killing over a million people each year by transmitting malaria, yellow fever, Zika and several other diseases.
