For the first time in our history, in the 56 years since Merdeka, we have a real choice in choosing who to grant the privilege of governing us. Which coalition will you choose? The incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN), which is the only federal government that all of us have known so far? Or the young upstart Pakatan Rakyat? We at REFSA have made our choice. We choose transformation. We choose Pakatan Rakyat. Pakatan has transformed race relations. Malaysians of all races gather congenially under the PAS moon and DAP rocket. A Malaysian-Chinese flying the PAS flag, or a Malay waving the DAP rocket symbol, would have been an unimaginable sight as recently as Feb 2008. Pakatan leaders have transformed the prisms by which we view each other, and led Malaysians from narrow communal siloes to broader, harmonious relations. Pakatan has transformed state governments. The federal Auditor- General has given Penang top marks for being the best financially- managed state; and the RM1.2b cash savings in Selangor are the highest in 28 years. Pakatan state governments were the first to give direct welfare aid to Malaysians: for example, the Senior Citizen Appreciation Programme in Penang and the TAWAS programme in Selangor. Pakatan has demonstrated that it is possible to be financially responsible and populist at the same time. Pakatan has proven that it can transform Malaysia for the better, in contrast to the „transformation‟ that (caretaker) prime minister Najib uses as a smoke-screen to hide business- as-usual shenanigans.

Countering opposition, generating doubt and mobilising support in rare earth metals-related environmental conflict in Malaysia: the persuasive discourse techniques of a transnational mining corporation and its supporters Kai-Lit Phua1 Simon Barraclough Monash University Malaysia, Malaysia La Trobe University, Australia Abstract Persuasion, a vital element in commercial marketing, is also an essential tool for the winning and maintenance of political power. Corporations seek to persuade customers to purchase their products and services but may also need to influence wider public opinion and political decision-makers in ways that serve their interests. In this article, we present an account of environmental-related conflict in Malaysia and the use of persuasion in the discourse of an Australian transnational mining corporation and its supporters. We analyse the strategies used by the corporation as it engages in intense conflict with environmental campaigners and concerned residents following its moves to establish the world's largest rare earth metals extraction plant in peninsular Malaysia. Following the political ecology perspective, we note that the efforts at persuasion used by the corporation have been actively backed by the Malaysian state itself. This is not simply a case of environmental conflict but strongly connected to the underlying political economy of Malaysia - a country with an authoritarian regime where corruption and 'crony capitalism' are rife, and public opinion is often ignored or consistently manipulated by government-controlled mass media. In clearing the air over his controversial “front door” statement in regards to the rare earths refinery last week, Wong (left) said he regretted the “indirect way” in which he had spoke, as this had led to the misunderstanding. “The reason for the confusion and resulting disappointment was due to my poorly made ‘off-the-cuff’ statement, which gave the impression that I welcome Lynas. “Should Pakatan form the next government of Malaysia, the Temporary Operating License (TOL) for Lynas to operate must be revoked and stop work order must be issued immediately,” he said in a statement issued today. Wong explained that in order to then challenge the termination of the TOL, Lynas must go through the most stringent and transparent detailed environment impact assessment (DEIA) process, of which he was sure there would be little chance of success. “In my professional view, given my experience as an environmental consultant, Lynas will not be able to comply with the many requirements of the DEIA, including stringent public consultation process and especially on the disposal of the processed waste. “To put it simply, once the plant is shut down, there is no chance for it to reopen again” he said. The same, he added, applies to other projects which pose a hazard to the environment as well as to the health and livelihood of the people, such as the gold mining in Raub, Pengerang petrochemical plant and the construction of dams in East Malaysia.

For that, Fong Poh Kuan had sexist jokes made of her in Parliament and Bersih chairperson S Ambiga had been called a prostitute. So where lies the disrespect? Have you forgotten one of your ministers suggested to her fellow Malaysian women to don sexy dresses to keep their husband from straying? However, most research points to social media being used mainly for broadcasting of information, and there is a need to test whether the interactive features are being used and are influencing election results. With the ability of researchers to download and collect masses of raw data from various social media such as Twitter and Facebook, the research into social media is now becoming more quantitative. With traditional media completely owned and controlled by the government, while the internet is free and uncensored, the use of social media in Malaysia has exploded over the past few years, with a corresponding use of this medium in campaigning, leading to researches attributing this to the rise of a viable opposition. In this paper we study passive interaction using data captured directly from the 2013 Malaysian General Election candidates’ Facebook Pages (FP), and show that the success of a candidate who is active and popular on Facebook rises to 77% when compared to the 38% general success rate of all candidates.

Tuan Wong Tack [Bentong] minta Menteri Air, Tanah dan Sumber Asli menyatakan keluasan kawasan untuk projek penanaman semula hutan besar-besaran yang akan dilaksanakan oleh badan bukan kerajaan Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre. Adakah ini bermakna sistem pengurusan hutan secara mampan yang diguna pakai selama ini telah mengakibatkan kemerosotan hutan asli. Tuan Yang di-Pertua, pihak kementerian belum lagi membuat keputusan berkenaan dengan cadangan penanaman semula yang dikemukakan oleh Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre (TRCRC). Berkaitan dengan cadangan penanaman semula ini, hal ini bukan bermakna kemerosotan hutan asli telah berlaku. Program penanaman semula ini adalah bertujuan untuk memulihkan hutan tersorot dengan izin, degraded forest seperti di kawasan diteroka, kawasan terbakar, kawasan ribut dan kawasan bekas lombong.
