Institutionalisation of Aborigines, under the guise of assimilation and protection policies, was only abandoned in.the lg7Os. It is therefore important to understand the implications of these policies for Aborigines and Australian society in general. I investigate the affect of institutionalisation on Aborigines, questioning the assumption tl.at they were passive victims forced onto missions and government stations and kept there as virtual prisoners. -

(Register, 7 October 1861, page 3c) Wabricoola - A property North -East of Black Rock; see pastoral lease no. 1634. Waddikee - A town, 32 km South-West of Kimba, proclaimed on 14 July 1927, took its name from the adjacent well and rock called wadiki where J.C. Darke was killed by Aborigines on 24 October 1844. Waddikee School opened in 1942 and closed in 1945. Aboriginal for ‘wattle’. ( See Darke Peak, Pugatharri & Koongawa, Hundred of) Waddington Bluff - On section 98, Hundred of Waroonee, probably recalls James Waddington, described as an ‘overseer of Waukaringa’. Wadella - A school near Tumby Bay in the Hundred of Hutchison opened on 1 July 1914 by Jessie Ormiston; it closed in 1926. Wadjalawi - A tea tree swamp in the Hundred of Coonarie, west of Point Davenport; an Aboriginal word meaning ‘bull ant water’. Wadmore - G.W. Goyder named Wadmore Hill, near Lyndhurst, after George Wadmore, a survey employee who was born in Plymouth, England, arrived in the John Woodall in 1849 and died at Woodside on 7 August 1918. W.R. Wadmore, Mayor of Campbelltown, was honoured in 1972 when his name was given to Wadmore Park in Maryvale Road, Campbelltown. -

australian societa y fo r s music educationm e “It all begins with the beat i ncorporated of a drum”: Early Australian encounters with Orff Schulwerk Jane Southcott, Wei Cosaitis Monash University Abstract The introduction of the influential Orff Schulwerk approach to music education in Australia is generally reported as occurring in the late 1960s. However, this was not the earliest encounters with the pedagogy in Australia. Patricia L. Holmes included Orff materials in teacher inservices in the late 1950s, before she travelled overseas to work with Doreen Hall, Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman. Historical research is lacking in many aspects of music education in Australia and this article attempts to chronicle early efforts and add to our understanding of what has been done in the past and shapes our present practices. Bound up with the construction of a market-driven, capitalist system via the tendrils of Empire, it was intimately associated with the processes of colonisation and the experiences of exploiting the land, labour and resources of the New World.1 All too often this led to conflict, particularly between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Overt violence (the euphemistic ‘skirmishes’, ‘affrays’ and ‘collisions’ of the documentary record), clandestine violence (poisonings, forced removals, sexual exploitation and disease) and structural violence (the compartmentalisation of Aboriginal people through processes of race, governance and labour) became routinised aspects of colonialism, buttressed by structures of power, inequality, dispossession and racism. Conflict at the geographical margins of this system was made possible by the general anxieties of life at, or beyond, the boundaries of settlement, closely associated with the normalised violence attached to ideals of ‘manliness’ on the frontier.2 The ‘History Wars’ that ignited at the turn of the twenty-first century sparked an enormous volume of detailed research into the nature and scale of frontier violence across Australia. University of Adelaide Elder Conservatorium of Music Thesis Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy – Music Education The South Australian May Music Camp: 1962 -1986 Submitted by Jennifer Watkins Adelaide, July 30, 2018 1 1 Abstract The aim of this research is to compile a chronological history of the South Australian May Music Camp (SAMMC), identifying it as a significant extra-curricular activity in the calendar of music education opportunities, open to children from nine to 23 years of age, between 1962 and 1986. This annual non- residential music camp took place over a five-day period, in the May school holidays. In 1987, a change of name to the South Australian State Music Camp (SASMC) occurred when the South Australian Government altered the annual school calendar from three terms to four, and the camp moved from the May to July school holidays. Students auditioned for SAMMC, to engage in an intensive, graded music ensemble experience, receiving expert tuition from professional music educators, while being exposed to extensive orchestral and wind ensemble repertoire. The SASMC continues to run successfully in 2018. This research follows the establishment of music camps in Australia in 1948, examining the contribution of the National Music Camp Association (NMCA) in the spread of state-based camps across Australia, specifically the SAMMC in Adelaide, and the subsequent formation of the South Australian Music Camp Association (SAMCA). The investigation outlines the aims and objectives of SAMCA acknowledging the important position SAMMC holds in South Australian music education history. Prior to this research, no record of the activities of SAMCA or SAMMC existed, so it makes a significant contribution to SA historical records. -

Dowling For Dianne Saal na saol Tús gá deiredh Tá muid beo Dá deo Life of lives Beginning without an end We are alive To the end of time (Enya & Ryan 1987) Abstract Palaeopathological studies have sought to build up a picture of Australian Aboriginal health before European settlement in 1788, and epidemiological studies of Aboriginal health in the twentieth century are now legion. But, despite a growing body of literature on Aboriginal history in the intervening colonial period, this remains an under-studied period from the viewpoint specifically of Aboriginal health. This thesis is a contribution to filling that gap through an examination of documentary and skeletal evidence on the changing bio-medical situation experienced by Aboriginal populations of Southeast Australia from 1788 to 1900. This thesis examines one of the major biological components of this change - the diseases that were introduced into Australian Aboriginal populations during the process of colonisation. The epidemiology, timing, diffusion of diseases are considered with specific attention given to infectious and respiratory diseases that were responsible for causing major epidemics of morbidity and mortality.
