  • Nandini Sundar
Interning Insurgent Populations: the buried histories of Indian Democracy Nandini Sundar Darzo (Mizoram) was one of the richest villages I have ever seen in this part of the world. There were ample stores of paddy, fowl and pigs. The villagers appeared well-fed and well-clad and most of them had some money in cash. We arrived in the village about ten in the morning. My orders were to get the villagers to collect whatever moveable property they could, and to set their own village on fire at seven in the evening. I also had orders to burn all the paddy and other grain that could not be carried away by the villagers to the new centre so as to keep food out of reach of the insurgents…. I somehow couldn’t do it. I called the Village Council President and told him that in three hours his men could hide all the excess paddy and other food grains in the caves and return for it after a few days under army escort. They concealed everything most efficiently. Night fell, and I had to persuade the villagers to come out and set fire to their homes. Nobody came out. Then I had to order my soldiers to enter every house and force the people out. Every man, woman and child who could walk came out with as much of his or her belongings and food as they could. But they wouldn’t set fire to their homes. Ultimately, I lit a torch myself and set fire to one of the houses.

  • Tree Diversity and Carbon Stocks of Hmuifang Forest, Mizoram
    S. B. Sharma et al. Int. J. Res. BioSciences, 7(1): 87-99 (2018) International Journal of Research in BioSciences Volume 7 Issue 1, pp. (87-99), January 2018 Available online at http://www.ijrbs.in ISSN 2319-2844 Research Paper Tree diversity and carbon stocks of hmuifang forest, Mizoram *Shijagurumayum Baleshwor Sharma, Ngangbam Somen Singh and R. Lalruatfela Department of Forestry, Mizoram University, Aizawl, Mizoram-796004, INDIA (Received October 13, 2017, Accepted December 29, 2017) Abstract The diversity of trees and carbon stock of Hmuifang forest were studied. The highest Density, Frequency and Important value Index were found in Dipterocarpus retusus with 153.33, 86.67 and 42.33 respectively, followed by Helicia excelsa with 136.67, 73.33 and 22.10 respectively. Lithocarpus xylocarpus has the highest abundance (2.40) followed by Helicia excelsa (1.86). The study of diversity indices shows that there is greater diversity, the community has a higher evenness and there are fewer disturbances in the forest. Biomass of trees was calculated by using allometric equations. Below ground Biomass was estimated by the Root- Shoot ratio relationship. The highest biomass was stored in Quercus floribunda (244.61 t/ha) followed by Dipterocarpus retusus (175.04 t/ha). Soil samples were collected from four depths layer (0-10 cm), (10-20 cm), (20-30 cm) and (30-40 cm). Soil Organic Carbon was determined by using Walkley-Black wet oxidation method. The Total Carbon Stock of Hmuifang Forest was found to be 468.26 t/ha and total CO2 sequestered is 1718.51. The results of this study help understand the status of this forest and its importance in Carbon sequestration.

  • Morphotectonic Study in a Part of Indo-Burmese Ranges in Eastern Mizoram, India
Senhri Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies, Vol. 3, No. 2 (July - December 2018), pp. 81-92 Research Article Open Access Senhri Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies A Journal of Pachhunga University College ISSN: 2456-3757 (A Peer Reviewed Journal) Vol. 03, No. 02 July-Dec., 2018 Journal Website: https://sjms.mizoram.gov.in Morphotectonic Study in a part of Indo-Burmese Ranges in Eastern Mizoram, India Farha Zaman1,*, Devojit Bezbaruah1, Lalhmingsangi2 & Raghupratim Rakshit1 1Dept. of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Assam 2Pachhunga University College, Aizawl, Mizoram *Corresponding Author: [email protected] Abstract Mizoram fold belt, situated in geologically complex Indo-Burmese Ranges, comprises of arcuate sedimentary belt. This NS trending mountain series is cut by a number of parallel to subparallel NNE-SSW, NE-SW, and NW-SE tectonic features like faults, deformed hill ranges etc. This research work was carried out in Champhai district of eastern Mizoram, near Indo- Myanmar border. In this study, a morphotectonic analysis has been performed to know the presence of active tectonics for the region. Morphotectonic parameters were calculated for 32 basins of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th order basins. Tuipui River had been originated near Champhai town which is supposed to be a paleo-lake. The two major rivers Tuipui and Tayo have similar entrench meander patterns which might have been controlled by some structural features. Most of the other drainage shows rectangular, trellis, oval and circular pattern along with the unique river meanders. The eastern basins of the Tuipui river mostly shows WNW highly asymmetrical (|AF|=IV) tilted basins whereas the western basins shows SE moderately asymmetrical (|AF|=III) tilted basins.
