SAVERNAKE TEAM MINISTRY As we enter February, love is in the air once again. Who can fail to notice that shops are filled with Valentine’s cards and roses? It’s a time when we are encouraged to buy cards and flowers for our loved ones - although I do my best to resist. However, the present day retail custom of sending cards and flowers is far removed from the life, in fact lives, of the two Saints Valentine after whom the day is named. The present day custom is said to have been attributed to John Donne who wrote a marriage song for Princess Elizabeth, daughter of James I, when she married on St Valentine’s Day in 1632. But the Saints we really commemorate are Valentine of Terni, a Bishop, and Valentine of Rome, a priest. Both were martyred in the middle of the third century on the Flaminian Way, the road linking Rome and Terni. We know little about their respective lives and deaths, although there are basilicas dedicated to each of them. But there is enough truth in both stories to remind us that living as Christians was difficult and led to persecution, and it is no different nowadays. We are fortunate in this country that we still can profess our faith openly and worship freely; but there are many areas in the world where confessing that you are a Christian is tantamount to the death penalty. How can it be right that families are separated or worshippers massacred for worshipping the God of love? That remains a question we struggle to answer. Later in the month on February 22nd is Ash Wednesday and there will be services in some of our churches to mark the start of Lent – the period of forty days reminding us of the time Jesus’ spent being tempted in the wilderness. It’s traditionally a period of study and penitence during which we begin the focus on Easter and our Lord’s passion; ultimately his supreme act of love by sacrifice on the cross. It is also a time when we consider giving things up….only to take them up again immediately following Easter. But this year I would like to encourage you all to take something on instead. At Burbage time has recently been set aside to pray for the world. To remember before God those places where there is violence, persecution, war and intolerance. So perhaps throughout this Lent we can all remember those places and reach out to them in prayer as an act of love for the whole of humanity. With every blessing, Rob Robert Grist, Assistant Curate

CHRISTMAS Very many thanks to everyone who contributed their skill, labour and love to make the church so beautiful and ready for our Christmas worship! Chute is really lucky to have such kind and talented people, and we all appreciate them! There is quite a lot is happening in February … in date order: Sunday 5th February 10-11.30am Sunday Club in the Village Hall to prepare for Christingle. Sunday 5th February 4pm THE CHRISTINGLE SERVICE

2 As Christingle has no connection with Christmas, we hope you will enjoy the February service instead. The Annual Parochial Church Meeting will follow the Christingle service and be held in Quince Cottage The Annual Report and the Accounts will be presented (and displayed on the notice board in the church until after Easter). All parishioners are welcome. The PCC will be glad to hear any questions or suggestions. Sunday 12th February 11am PLOUGH SUNDAY SERVICE Although Plough Sunday is traditionally the Sunday after The Epiphany it may be celebrated on any appropriate Sunday to coincide with the start of the ‘ploughing season’ so we are a little late but would still like to celebrate the plough and the land. Do join us for this special service. Friday 25th February 2.15-3.15pm Pram Gathering in the church. All 4s and under welcome. Monday 27th February 8-9.30pm LENT COURSE begins in Quince Cottage We are doing a Lent Course of 5 Monday evening sessions based on the writings of CS Lewis and we will see excerpts from the DVDs of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and ‘Shadowlands’. Lent was traditionally a time of sackcloth and ashes, and a drab grey-run up to the glorious resurrection theme of Easter, and this Lent Course tackles some tough subjects such as suffering, sin, judgement and the Devil! We can all learn! Coffee and tea will be provided, the cost will be £5 (for the book) discussion will be informal and interesting, and any/everyone is welcome. You can just turn up, but it would be helpful to tell David or Mary or a PCC member in advance if possible. LADIES’ BREAKFAST – Saturday 3rd March – Chute Village Hall 9-11am Come and have a lovely breakfast in the Village Hall. All ladies welcome and it’s free. This year’s speaker is Vivienne Roderick, mother of 5, who was born in Ireland, brought up in Australia and now lives in . She has had an extraordinary life and tells it very well – you will not be bored. Bring your friends – the more the merrier. You just have to book in with a PCC member so that we know how many to cater for. News of a concert in Ludgershall on Monday 6th February at 7.30pm The Men's and Boys' choir of Salisbury Cathedral will be giving a concert in St James's Church at 7.30 p.m. There will be half an hour of bell ringing beforehand, the tickets

CAROL SINGING IN CHUTE CADLEY AND LOWER CHUTE A group of enthusiasts sang in Chute Cadley and Lower Chute on 23rd December. It seems such a long time ago, but we would like to thank everyone who welcomed us and contributed so generously. We sent a cheque for £100 to the Andover Food Bank, and they were very pleased.

CAROLS AT THE KEYS On December21st, we sang 21 carols, ending with no. 21! A great time was had by all, and thanks to Gareth for his keyboard skills, to Chris, Mike and Mark for their solos; to all those who participated singing so heartily, and to George and his staff for his hospitality.

To make the evening even more enjoyable, £100.50 was raised and sent to the National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease (NACC), a charity nominated by George.

RENTAL Only nominal rent required. Do you know anyone who might be interested in renting an annexe short term? It has a separate entrance and a brand new large kitchen with space for eating and sofa, bedroom and bathroom with shower and separate bath, loo and basin. All newly decorated. CHUTE FOREST PARISH COUNCIL As chairman of the Chute Forest Parish Council it was my sad duty at the meeting on the 19th of January to announce the resignation of our clerk Margaret Winterbourne. Margaret has been a loyal and hardworking clerk since she joined us. She has kept a firm hand and made sure that we in the council obeyed the rules but still retained her sense of humour. We will miss her. This means that the post of clerk to the council will be vacant. Margaret has said that she will be with us until the May meeting. Chute Forest Parish Council is a very small council with just five members and we meet every two months on the third Thursday and there is the annual meeting held in April. I have all the details at the house including rates of remuneration and travelling costs. In this day and age internet skills are essential even the chairman needs to know which key to hit. If anyone is interested please contact me at my home Tantanoola, Chute Forest by phone 730260 or by e-mail [email protected]. Rowan Cherrington, Chairman Chute Forest Parish Council.

9 COLLINGBOURNES CHUTE AND EVERLEIGH LINK GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Collingbournes, Chute and Everleigh Link Good Neighbour Scheme will hold it’s Annual General Meeting in Collingbourne Kingston Village Hall on Thursday 1st March 2012 at 7.30pm. This is a public meeting open to everyone. It is your opportunity to ask questions about how the LINK scheme works and to find out more about its future plans. The current Chairman, Basil Frost, will be standing down so there will be an election for a new Chairman. Please come along on 1st March and let your voice be heard. Pat Lincoln, Honorary Secretary LOCAL POLICE REPORT Remember to review your security arrangements regularly. In a recent burglary in Collingbourne Kingston, the burglar alarm was not set as the occupants were only away from the house for 30 minutes mid-morning. The offenders broke in forcing a rear window and stole valuables and must have been watching the house to carry out a burglary so quickly. Burglaries of outbuildings/garages have also taken place systematically in the Tidworth area. Beware of a non-authorised Neighbourhood Watch website, which is called www.nhwo.co.uk and was launched on 14 December 2011. It is marketing a ‘co- ordinators pack’ at £39.99 which includes non-authorised items. There is an official site should anyone wish to register an interest called www.ourwatch.org.uk but the simplest way to find out about Neighbourhood Watch is to contact us and deal directly with Philippa. Incidents in the Chutes last month include males seen acting suspiciously by houses on Hatchett Hill, persons taking firewood from land without permission, a parking confrontation in Tibb’s Meadow, someone sending nuisance text messages to a resident, road traffic accident on Chute Causeway and Utility Companies contacting a farm to change utilities to an unknown individual who did not live at property. 12 CAR SHARING A study group on transport reported that residents in the area without cars found life very difficult. Some areas have gone from four bus’s a day to one. Although this is not such a problem in the Chutes it was noted that that an early bus would be appreciated due to the high teenage population in the Chutes. Wiltshire Council is promoting a car share scheme and details can be found on the website www.carsharewiltshire.com. The online system enables people to advertise, apply and share cars into work. Simply register your details, where you are travelling to and from and whether you're offering or seeking a lift then this site will search for appropriate matches. If you work for Wiltshire Council or Salisbury Health Authority, you can also join your company scheme. The website also gives other useful travel and transport information in Wiltshire. ROAD CLOSURES The following road closures are due to take place January to March 2012 to allow road repairs. Closures are expected to be for 1 – 4 days and the entire work will take place over 10 weeks. Road closure Alternative route Biddesden Road (Part), Ludgershall; from Forest Lane to Lower Chute, Lodge Lane its junction with Biddesden Crossroads and vice versa (Hampshire Boundary) in a northerly direction to Forest Lane, Chute Forest. Dummer Lane, Chute; from its junction Chute Causeway, Lane, with Malthouse Lane in a northerly Hampshire Gate to Chute Cadley, Chute direction to its junction with Chute Cadley to Lower Chute, Lower Chute to Causeway Chute Standen and vice versa.

For further information regarding these works please contact Simon Price (Mouchel) on 01225 779870.

13 BOURNE VALLEY MOVIES Our wonderful prospect for February is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (15), a treat for the thinking screen buff. This is the first big screen version of the iconic John Le Carre novel. Colin Firth is in it but George Smiley is played superbly by Gary Oldman. Menacing but gripping. The showing will be at the Vernham Dean Millennium Hall on Wednesday, 22nd February 2012 at 7.30pm (the bar opens at 7pm). Tickets, priced at £5.50, can be purchased in advance at Hurstbourne Tarrant post office, the George Inn, Vernham Dean, or from Pat Caddick. Tickets on the door are £6. Book early because we should get a house full. March brings us My Week with Marilyn. We are pleased to announce that Lady Thatcher will be with us earlier than expected, thanks to a Moviola deal, Although she has only emerged in the cinemas in mid- January, we are offering The Iron Lady in April. A brilliant film, with surely an Oscar winning performance from Meryl Streep. We are hoping for War Horse in May. The spring/summer programme is bursting with goodies! Pat Caddick – Tel 730730

VILLAGE WEB SITE – www.thechutes.org.uk This is in the process of being updated, again, and now has a diary of all the village dates for all of 2012 which I am currently aware of. If you would like your event included in this village diary, please let me know and I will get it on there as quickly as possible. Also, please note that every effort is made to correctly represent village organisations and their activities. If there are any corrections or improvements which you would like to see, again please let me know and I will do so as quickly as possible. To date, the site has been ‘hit’ almost 195,000 times which goes to show how popular it appears to be. Chris [email protected]
