More than 60 legendary TWR Racing team members reunited for the first time

A historically significant moment occurred during the event when visitors witnessed over 60 ex-team members of the legendary Racing team (TWR), who were based locally in , re-united for the first time. The reunion included personnel involved in all aspects of the team from engineers and mechanics to racing drivers and designers from an internationally famous racing team. TWR employed hundreds of people in Oxfordshire and beyond during their heyday and became synonymous with Jaguar after talking them to initial victory with the European Touring Car series with the XJS programme of the early-1980s. TWR followed that up with World Sportscar championship wins and victory at Le Mans in 1988 and 1990. Later, TWR developed road cars for Jaguar and eventually translated their racing car into supercar guise in the form of the XJR-15 leading to what was to become the fastest car in the world at the time, the Jaguar XJ220. The TWR display at Blenheim found crowds buzzing excitedly over the legendary purple liveried XJR-9, the very car that won Le Mans in 1988 and Tom Walkinshaw’s own Group A XJ-S V12 still resplendent in its white-on-green livery. One of the TWR XJ220s that raced at Le Mans in 1993 was also present, displayed at the show by owner Don Law.

Interviews and commentary were ongoing throughout the day and broadcast to the palace grounds via a huge TV wall, with expert presenter Wayne Scott interviewing visiting celebrities from the world of Jaguar. Interviewees included 1988 Le Mans winning driver Andy Wallace, TWR engineer Allan Scott, race strategist Alastair MacQueen and revered racing car designer , who was responsible for penning the TWR Jaguars.

Speaking during his interview at the event, Andy Wallace, who drove the Silk Cut Jaguar XJR9 to victory at Le Mans in 1988 alongside and Johnny Dumfries said,

“It’s been great meeting up with all my old pals from TWR. When we won Le Mans in 1988 it was really was a team effort. It was an incredibly important moment in my racing career that I look back at with pride and to be able to share those memories with Jaguar fans today was something special.”

More than just anniversaries

Fans of British GT motorsport flocked towards the palace courtyard, which displayed the Invictus Games Racing team, giving aficionados an opportunity to get up close with the team’s F-type currently competing in the GT4 category of the championship. Consisting of two ex-military servicemen, Paul Vice and Steve McCulley, who overcame horrific injuries fighting for their country, the Invictus Games Racing team was represented by their pro-driver team mate Matthew George, who spent the day chatting to fans, signing autographs and explaining the inspirational story behind the team.

Jaguar fans travelled from all over the UK and indeed the world to attend the event, including visitors from the USA and mainland Europe. One such owner, Tor Bottolfsen, drove his TWR Jaguar XJ12 all the way from Norway to attend. In recognition of this, he was awarded the first “Trust Trophy” from the Jaguar Heritage Trust for his very rare car which is one of just six ever made.

The event also offered a trade show, selling everything from hard-to-find model cars to new-old parts and contemporary products for both classic and modern Jaguars. For fans of aviation, the day was punctuated with a Supermarine Spitfire fly-past courtesy of the Battle of Britain Memorial flight over the house known as the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Those who remained torn between attending Blenheim’s 2019 Summer Jaguar Festival and watching the Spanish Grand Prix found solace when the F1 event was shown live on the big screen from 2pm onwards, courtesy of event sponsors Pirelli.

Speaking after the event, the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club General Manager James Blackwell said,

“We had high hopes for the event at Blenheim Palace and on the day the festival exceeded all our expectations. It was a really special day, made perfect by the glorious sunshine and the elegantly grand surroundings that complimented perfectly, the vast array of classic Jaguars on display. We had so many great comments from the more than one thousand Jaguar owners showing their cars throughout the day. Keep an eye out in the very near future for another Summer Jaguar Festival coming your way.”

Andy Webber, Event Manager for the Summer Jaguar Festival said,

“One of the many highlights was reuniting all those incredible team members from the Tom Walkinshaw Racing team. It was a very memorable moment and we were proud, through the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club to be the conduit to that historic occasion.”

Andy Webber adds:

“The Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club specifically opted for Blenheim Palace this year, because not only did the surroundings compliment the luxurious and quintessentially British identity of Jaguar, but it also offered the perfect display area within the courtyard to draw attention to some particularly special vehicles as well as stunning park grounds for hosting our display cars and trade area. Furthermore, the surrounding parkland road system was ideal for our cavalcade with a route special enough to give the parade a real sense of occasion.”

As the baking sun saw out the afternoon shadows, the village of Woodstock’s roads became dominated by a plethora of both classic and modern Jaguars as participants set off for home, drawing locals onto the streets for an impromptu spectacle.

JDCLI ANNUAL SPRING DUST OFF By Mike Carroll, President Photos courtesy of ELIUD CUSTODIO: On April 28th, our club held its Annual Spring Dust off. It was a three-part event that started with a tour of the private car collection of How- ard Kroplick located in Roslyn New York. The highlight of the collection was the Tucker #1044 that recently received a complete restoration. This car had just returned, after a stop at the Simeone Museum in Philly, from the Amelia Island Concours where it received first place in its class.

Following a great morning at Howard’s, the group took a scenic drive through the North Shore towns of Sea Cliff, Glen Cove and Old Brookville ending up at the Historic Milleridge Inn for a served Brunch.

The turnout of club members was very good and we would like to thank everyone who participated. The weather was not the best, but that did not stop everyone from having s good time. The cars, food and great company produced a very interesting and enjoyable day.

I am Looking forward to seeing everyone for our next event which is the Jags at Stony Brook Veterans facility followed by a summer barbecue at Eliud and Meg’s house.

Book Review: Well, every great book deserves a sequel. I had earlier reviewed “Jaguar XK120 DHC, Installing the Soft Top and Headliner” by John Gegner and Gregg Philbrick and I realized that the soft top installation was only part of the larger question, how do you start on and go about restoring a classic Jaguar without sending the car and large check to a professional restorer? Well the answer to my question was delivered by John in this more substantial, equally well written, story in 124 pages with 135 photos.

The author states the book “is not a substitute for already published restoration books”, but I cannot imagine embarking on a classic car restoration without this book as a guide to what is a large home garage project. The book provides a rationale for the overall structure for a restoration project, how to sequence and manage the project and guidance on identifying the critical path to avoid rework or long periods of downtime. Preparing your workspace for the project and guidance on make versus buy are some of the great collection of common-sense hints and guidance provided by the work.

After setting the stage with the history of John’s XK120 and workspace preparation, the book walks through each of the major stages and for each stage provides the cost of key parts and labor. Each section is followed by lesson learned, hints and tips, references to more detailed technical publications, all accompanied by illustrative color photos.

The book provides easy reading with an efficient use of words and I found it to be quite a page-turner during my review. Although the book describes John’s adventure restoring his XK120, it provides a great basis for any classic Jaguar restoration as the project structure and many of lessons learnt and references are not XK120 specific. A great addition to any respectable Jaguar library at the cost of $68 including shipping in the U.S

A Celebration of the British Lifestyle and All Great British Motorcars and Motorcycles! 1994 JAGUAR XJ220

--Spa Silver with Smoke Grey leather Interior, Grey carpeting, 3.5 liter V-6 Twin Turbo engine, 5-Speed manual , 5,500 original Kilometers/3,400 Miles from new, Long-term collector ownership, one of 277 production cars.

Jaguar wowed the world when they revealed their new concept/prototype car in 1988. The goal was an ultra-exclusive supercar with unbelievable specifications that can compete with any thoroughbred. As its place in history, many promises were made in the tabloids of engine, top speed and performance specs. After a few years of planning in the 1980s, completed their purchased of Jaguar. While the XJ220 project was kept alive, specifications were altered by the time production started. The XJ220 was fitted with a -designed, 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V-6 as used in the XJR-11 racecar. With more than 540bhp, this propelled the Jag well over 200mph test driven by F1 great . This made the Jaguar faster than the F40 and the Diablo and the fastest production car in the world until the McLaren F1.

This XJ220 was produced on January 7th, 1994. Originally sold in Germany where it remained until 2004, the Jag was then imported to the United States and sold to a doctor in Florida. It was then sold to its last caretaker, a well- known collector in 2010 and has been immaculately maintained ever since. The car was sent to Jeff Snyder, a well- known Jaguar restorer, for a new fuel cell, servicing and reworking the entire fuel system and new tires. After this work was completed, the car was shipped back to Jaguar in in 2011 and the factory completely went through and serviced all components including rebuilding the engine to exact original European factory specs. As the Jag was finishing its service work, the Aston Martin Owner’s Club invited XJ220s and their owners to show their cars as a special class at their Spring concours. The owner drove the car from Coventry to Oxford and then to a building in , which was the original XJ220 factory (later became the DB7 factory).

Maintained and cared for regardless of use and with only 5,500 Kilometers, this is simply one of the best XJ220’s available in the world. It is in superb condition throughout and all systems working exactly as they should. This XJ220 is complete with its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, all original books – owner’s and service manuals, service records include all engine work, original first aid kit (still in its plastic), wheel tool and complete promotional and brochure material from prototype to launch.

A landmark model in Jaguar’s amazing history, the XJ220 is still the company’s fastest-ever production car. The XJ220 remains highly collectible, sought after by Jaguar enthusiasts and supercar collectors alike. With gorgeous supercar looks and top-level performance, this beautiful XJ220 represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of the most significant supercars of its era.

Our hobby, and business for some of us, has changed quite a lot since I started seriously collecting, and writing, over 30 years ago. For awhile, in the 1990s there was a publication for collectors of automobilia, but since its demise long ago, there has been absolutely nothing for all of us …..until now. I am truly excited about this new publication, and I am delighted to be a part of it.

The Hispano Suiza Stork is one of the most well-known mascots in the automotive world. Designed by Frederick Bazin to honor France’s renowned WWI flying ace George Guynemere. Hispano was involved in wartime aviation engineering, and the company adopted The Stork as being representative of France’s aerial successes.

This example was photographed on one of the beautiful Hispano-Suiza cars within the Mullin Automotive Museum’s famed collection in Oxnard, CA. For more great history and automobilia, please visit AutoMobiliaResource.com and subscribe! 19th Annual British Legends Weekend

FEBRUARY 16, 2016

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA - If you like British cars, and insist on good art, watercolor artist George Ellis has lots of fine art prints to choose from. Whether your interest is in MGs, Jaguars, Austin-Healeys, or other British cars, Mr. Ellis offers a growing list of prints featuring the classics.

Mr. Ellis is not new to painting cars; he's been painting for 15 years. What's new is that he is now offering Open Edition and Limited Edition prints of his work at his Web site, www.GeorgeEllis.com. The prints are produced to the highest standards.

At the George Ellis Gallery online, visitors are greeted by a light green SS-100 Jaguar in a beach scene. Clicking the first of the links at the left of the screen, one reads "About the Art," which offers a brief synopsis of the artist, the art, the prints, and how to order prints through the site.

The prints come in a variety of sizes: most are 11x14 inches, some are larger (up to 16x20 inches), and some are available as 5x7 inch prints. They're produced with archival inks on watercolor-type paper to hold their true colors well over time. It's expensive to make prints this way, but fine art is meant to last indefinitely.

Mr. Ellis's art looks attractive on the walls of any home, garage, shop, office, and of course "mancaves." Limited Edition prints in particular represent an investment in art that can be expected to gain in value over the years.

To visit the George Ellis Gallery online, go to www.GeorgeEllis.com. The site accepts major credit cards and PayPal, and it offers "old school" customers the low-tech option of printing out a paper order form. If you have questions or would like to leave a comment, use the Contact form in the links list. The Gallery also accepts commissions; e-mail inquiries to [email protected] or call the Gallery at 631- 757-3722 during business hours for details. www.GeorgeEllis.com • 631-757-3722 •P.O.
