Congresistas estadounidenses visitan Gibraltar
Gibraltar, 31 de julio de 2019
Una delegación de cinco Miembros del Congreso de Estados Unidos ha llegado a Gibraltar para una visita de dos días, tras el viaje del Viceministro Principal a Washington de hace unos meses.
La visita se ha organizado con la mediación del Reino Unido, en virtud del programa auspiciado por la Ley de Intercambio Educativo y Cultural (Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act, MECEA).
El Viceministro Principal, Joseph García recibió a la delegación en el aeropuerto y, posteriormente, el Ministro de Educación, John Cortés, organizó una cena de bienvenida.
Esta mañana, Joseph García informó a los Congresistas sobre los últimos acontecimientos políticos, incluido el Brexit.
Asimismo, conocerán al Gobernador Teniente General Edward Davis y al Comandante de las Fuerzas Británicas en Gibraltar, el Comodoro Tim Henry. Luego realizarán una visita al Parlamento de Gibraltar a manos de su Presidente, Adolfo Cánepa.
Los Congresistas han tenido la oportunidad de intercambiar opiniones con representantes de la Cámara de Comercio estadounidense (AMCHAM).
Además, el programa también incluye una visita a uno de los nuevos colegios y a lugares de interés histórico, como los túneles utilizados por el General Eisenhower durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
El Viceministro Principal, Joseph García, comentó: “Estoy encantado de haber podido organizar esta visita en estrecha colaboración con la Foreign and Commonwealth Office y la Embajada británica en Washington. Quiero expresar mi profundo agradecimiento, tanto a ellos como al personal de mi equipo, por haber hecho esto posible. No me cabe ninguna duda de que ver Gibraltar en primera persona será para ellos una experiencia de valor incalculable y les permitirá comprender mejor la situación”.

A delegation of five Members of Congress of the United States of America is in Gibraltar for a two- day visit.
This follows the trip to Washington by Deputy Chief Minister earlier this year.
The visit has been organised through the United Kingdom under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (MECEA) scheme.
The delegation were received at the airport by Dr Garcia and then hosted to a welcome dinner by the Minister for Education Professor John Cortes.
The Congressmen were briefed this morning on the latest political developments, including Brexit, by the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia.
They will also meet His Excellency the Governor Lt General Edward Davis and the Commander British Forces Commodore Tim Henry. They will be shown around the Gibraltar Parliament by the Speaker The Hon Adolfo Canepa.
The Congressmen have had the opportunity to exchange views with representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce AMCHAM.
A visit to a new educational facility and to places of historical interest like the tunnels used by General Eisenhower during World War II will form part of the schedule.
The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia said:
“I am delighted that we have been able to organise this visit in close cooperation with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the UK Embassy in Washington. I am very grateful to them and to my staff who have made this possible. I have no doubt that seeing Gibraltar for themselves will prove to be an invaluable experience and provide a better understanding of the situation. ”
