From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living. -
Use of Reflexive Thinking in Music Therapy to Understand the Therapeutic Process; Moments of Clarity, Self-Criticism: an Autoethnography
Qualitative Inquiries in Music Therapy 2018: Volume 13 (1), pp. Barcelona Publishers USE OF REFLEXIVE THINKING IN MUSIC THERAPY TO UNDERSTAND THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS; MOMENTS OF CLARITY, SELF-CRITICISM: AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHY Demeko Freeman, MMT, MT-BC ABSTRACT This research followed the phenomenological tradition to deliver an autoethnographic account of my experience as a music therapist working with people living with dementia. My aim was to challenge socio-cultural stigmas surrounding dementia as well as extend the sources of “truth” in regard to epistemological and ontological stances. The autoethnography presented a reflective examination through story of my daily life at a residential treatment facility. In this paper I explore encounters with residents and staff in an effort to better understand myself as a clinician and the therapeutic process. This process included decisions I made, the rationale for those decisions, and the evolution of the relationships. PRELUDE The Missing Person One rarely conducts research that is of no personal interest or gain. Realistically, the researcher’s influence will always be present in the research, as the foundation of the research question comes from the researcher’s personal curiosity to understand the phenomena under investigation (Muncey, 2010). The curiosity that propels research may stem from the memory of a loved one, a personal or professional interaction with another human being, or academic discourse. Aigen (2015) states that researchers, “are passionate advocates for particular theories and these theoretical commitments influence how facts are construed” (p. 12). Aigen further expresses that those in favor of a theory or stance are more likely to present findings that confirm it, while opponents of a theory will do the opposite. -

April 1, 2016 Dear Affiliate Partner: To assist you in complying with the reporting requirements for children’s television and the requirement that stations air “core” children’s programming, we are providing you with episode-specific descriptions (the ‘NBC Kids” educational and informational programming block) as set forth in the attached Community Relations Quarterly Children’s Programming Report for the 1st quarter of 2016. The report includes information to help prepare FCC Form 398. Please note that we have not included the specific dates and times for each of the programs as that may be station-specific. This report is divided into the following categories: 1. Educational Objectives: NBC Kids for both 1st quarter 2016 and 2nd quarter 2016. 2. Core programming: Regularly scheduled programming furnished by the NBC Network that is specifically designed to serve the educational and informational needs of children 16 and under. Each of these programs is identified on-air as educational and informational with the “E/I” icon, and is similarly identified to the national listing services. To assist stations with the preemption report section of FCC Form 398, we have added specific episode numbers. Please note that the age target for NBC Kids programming is identified as 2-5 years old. 3. Other programming: Programming furnished by the NBC Network that contributes to the educational and informational needs of children 16 and under, but is not specifically designed to meet the educational and informational needs of children. 4. Public service announcements targeted to children 16 and under. 5. Non-broadcast efforts that enhance the educational and informational value of NBC Network programming to children. -

Actor Alicia Witt Turns Musician with 'Revisionary History'
ALICIA WITT Alicia Witt has had an over three-decade long career, starting with her acting debut as Alia in David Lynch's classic ‘Dune’. Alicia received rave reviews for her role as Paula in Season 6 of AMC’s critically acclaimed series The Walking Dead. Witt also appeared during Season 4 of ABC’s ‘Nashville’ as country star Autumn Chase and in the new Twin Peaks on Showtime, reprising her role as Gerstein Hayward. Witt most recently was seen haunting John Cho’s character as Demon Nikki on Season 2 of Fox’s The Exorcist; other recent credits include the Emmy-award winning Showtime series ‘House of Lies’ opposite Don Cheadle and the hit WB series ‘Supernatural’. Witt is also well known to Hallmark audiences for her annual Christmas movies; her latest, which she co-wrote and is producing, will be released later this year. She can also be seen this fall as Marjorie Cameron in Season 2 of anthology series Lore, on Amazon. In 2014, Alicia joined the 5th Season of Emmy-award winning FX series ‘Justified’ with Timothy Olyphant. Alicia played Wendy Crowe, the smart and sexy paralegal sister of crime lord Daryl Crowe (Michael Rapaport) who takes matters into her own hands to bring him to justice in the Season 5 finale. On stage, she most recently appeared at the Geffen Playhouse in the Los Angeles debut of Tony-nominated Neil Labute play ‘reasons to be pretty’. In 2013, Alicia appeared opposite Peter Bogdanovich and Cheryl Hines in the independent family dramedy 'Cold Turkey', in a performance which NY Daily News critic David Edelstein hailed as one of the best of 2013. -

Heuristic Futures: Reading the Digital Humanities through Science Fiction A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature of the College of Arts and Sciences by Joseph William Dargue 2015 B.A. (Hons.), Lancaster University, 2006 M.A., Royal Holloway, University of London, 2008 Committee Chair: Laura Micciche, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation attempts to highlight the cultural relationship between the digital humanities and science fiction as fields of inquiry both engaged in the development of humanistic perspectives in increasingly global digital contexts. Through analysis of four American science fiction novels, the work is concerned with locating the genre’s pedagogical value as a media form that helps us adapt to the digital present and orient us toward a digital future. Each novel presents a different facet of digital humanities practices and/or discourses that, I argue, effectively re-evaluate the humanities (particularly traditional literary studies and pedagogy) as a set of hybrid disciplines that leverage digital technologies and the sciences. In Pat Cadigan’s Synners (1993), I explore issues of production, consumption, and collaboration, as well as the nature of embodied subjectivity, in a reality codified by the virtual. The chapters on Richard Powers’ Galatea 2.2 (1995) and Vernor Vinge’s Rainbows End (2006) are concerned with the passing of traditional humanities practices and the evolution of the institutions they are predicated on (such as the library and the composition classroom) in the wake of the digital turn. -
Understanding Collaboration in Participatory Music Projects with Communities Supporting Marginalised Young People
Qualitative Inquiries in Music Therapy 2015: 10(3), 77–126 BEING A PLAYER: UNDERSTANDING COLLABORATION IN PARTICIPATORY MUSIC PROJECTS WITH COMMUNITIES SUPPORTING MARGINALISED YOUNG PEOPLE Lucy Bolger, PhD ABSTRACT Participatory approaches to practice are a fundamental aspect of the evolving Community Music Therapy (CoMT) discourse (Stige & Aaro, 2012). While collaborative process is critical to participatory practice, there is currently limited practical understanding of the process of collaboration in CoMT projects, and the experience of collaboration for participants. This study investigates the process of collaboration between a music therapist and community participants in three participatory music projects in Melbourne, Australia. These projects were undertaken with three separate communities supporting groups of marginalised young people. The young people and their supporting communities collaborated as co-researchers in this study, and we used an action research design. Together, we sought to understand and articulate the process of collaboration in participatory music projects, and to investigate the meaning of collaboration for the young people involved. We explored these areas though cycles of action and reflection, and results emerged from a series of iterative, interpretative analyses. The results of these analyses were: 1) A practical model of collaborative process in music therapy, and 2) an understanding of the conditions required to optimise the potential for positive growth for collaborators in participatory music projects. The research process and results are articulated in this paper. The ultimate outcome of this research is a synthesis of these results. In this paper I offer an overall picture of what collaboration in CoMT project involves and requires of collaborators—a process I call “Being a player”. -

Street music – a conscious deliberate propagation of sound in public space – opens an entryway into comprehending the role of sound in the city, and what it reveals about the city’s inhabitants. Ethnographic fieldwork in Brussels and Stockholm focuses on street musicians of all kinds, exploring how their music is shaped by their personal motivations, how their practices negotiate meaning in sound and in space, and how their rhythms shape, and are shaped by, the city. These explorations give reason to question R. Murray Schafer’s philosophies on soundscape studies, particularly in the urban context. Drawing from Henri Lefebvre’s notions of the production of space, and rhythmanalysis as an analytical tool, the urban soundscape is understood as an ongoing negotiation of individual actions, where dynamics of power, identity, and ideology become audible. Street musicians and their sound cultures feature not just as a topic worthy of study, but also as a guide of how and why to listen to and analyze the rhythms of the city. 1.
