Editorial Happy New Year to all and welcome to another exciting year with Chess Kids. There are a number of innovations which were mooted last year that have come to be reality. And of course many more exciting things to come. 2002 will see a big effort to balance par- ticipation by boys and girls. More ap- pealing incentives for girls as well as girls’ only clubs, tournaments and inter- school competitions is just the start. Probably the most exciting of all is the new Grading Badges. This will give stu- dents, parents and teachers a solid indi- cation of how the student is improving. There are 3 levels (bronze, silver, gold) and 9 categories within each level, cov- ering all areas of chess knowledge and ability. Each brightly colored badge will show the world that you are capable in that area. How many can you collect? David Cordover The Australian Chess Championships were run by the Melbourne Chess Club in conjunction with Chess and the Australian Chess Federation. The Championship event was a closed tournament with only 32 competitors playing in an 11 round Swiss. There was also a Senior Championships (aged over 60) and a Reserves Tournament played at the same time. In the Championship event there were a number of junior players. All these play- ers had to pass stringent selection criteria (or be a State Champion) in order to be eligible to play. These standards are the same for adults or juniors, so one can say that the junior players who were selected to play in the Championship event are in the top 32 players in the country. The Junior players in the Championships were (state and rating): Svetozar Stojic (ACT, 1575), Samuel Chow (VIC, 1981), Justin Tan (NSW, 2049), IM David Smerdon (QLD, 2293) and IM Zong- Yuan Zhao (NSW, 2294). Smerdon and Zhao are both International Masters and recognised as two of the best players in the country. It is likely that Zhao will be selected to represent Austra- lia at the next Chess Olympiad. Zhao fin- ished in 6th place, Smerdon in 9th. Gordon Lindberg, Vikram Palit and Sally-Anne Richter walked away with $200 each for winning their rating groups.
