Racism has been a stain on the soul of soccer for generations but a series of high-profile incidents in recent years has prompted calls for tougher action from football's governing bodies. Even at amateur junior level, I saw the way presidents of clubs manipulated funds to get their senior mens teams promoted, buying players, dirty deals to pay a top striker etc. A number of different rule codes existed, such as the Cambridge rules and the Sheffield rules, meaning that there was often disagreement and confusion among players. This translation is the work of William Stoddart, and is largely based on the author's dictated translations, as revised by Catherine Schuon. • Are the Times Changing Enough? Print Media Trends Across Four Decades
Are the Times Changing Enough? Print media trends across four decades Abstract Media analysis is an established area of sport sociology which has been documented by researchers systematically since the 1980s. Some trends have explored the differences between male and female athletes in the print media with significant evidence demonstrating that female athletes do not gain proportional representation and that many strategies employed by journalists traditionally seek to trivialise, sexualise and emphasise the female identity as ‘other’ rather than as athlete. This longitudinal study uniquely documents an analysis of a two week period in the British print media across four decades 1984-2014. This study, grounded in liberal feminism, presents both quantitative and qualitative data and the main quantitative results demonstrate that coverage for female athletes has decreased from 13% to 6.2%. Qualitative themes presented include: relationships, appearance, performance and nationality, the latter emerging as a new theme from the 2014 data set. The results demonstrate that there is little change in amount of representation afforded to female athletes but that there are reporting changes with a greater emphasis on performance and less reliance on appearance. The paper concludes with the position that although sports reporting, in general is on the increase, women athletes are being given less but potentially better coverage. Key words Print media, women, longitudinal, sport, performance 1 Introduction Media analysis is an established area of sport sociology which has been documented by researchers systematically since the 1980s. Despite the extent and breadth of the area there have been some methodological trends which include a focus on print media, the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative content and the analysis of the portrayal of female athletes.

That’s when the state’s Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel declared an indefinite lockdown of all facilities under his jurisdiction. The lockdown, which began just days into the National Prison Strike (Aug. 21 to Sept. 9) is the most blatant in a series of repressive tactics that the state has resorted to in response to the strike. It was timed to preempt some major strike actions planned by prisoners. Attacks on right to legal counsel One week into the lockdown, Wetzel appeared alongside Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, who announced a sweeping series of new policies that constitute an unprecedented crackdown on the rights of prisoners. Among the many petty and punitive policies, like banning prisoners from taking photos with their visitors, there are also new mea- sures that will systematically deny prisoners their right to privacy with legal counsel. All correspondence sent to prisoners is now to be trans- ported to a third-party facility in Florida, where it will be opened and photocopied before copies are sent to the re- spective prisons to be delivered to the intended recipients. Since prison officials are at least in theory not allowed to open any mail containing legal correspondence, except in the presence of its recipient, a farcical new method has ‘They work us like dogs when it’s busy been introduced to get around this protection.
