AWI1566_OpenRoadDriverMag_outlines.indd 1 3/10/06 4:45:27 PM quite the concepts Future Directions in Cars The North American International Auto Show in Detroit is not only the most important auto show on the continent, but the most interesting due to all the concept cars. They can range from the fanciful to clearly just a step or two away from production. The ones we look at here are in the latter category, and most of them have a strong performance theme.

Preview and photos by Gerry Frechette

Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept The name says it all. This is a preview of the design direction for the successor to the Acura NSX. Until now Acura has long been a hold-out in adopting engines with more than six cylinders and/or rear-wheel drive for its upscale models. This time it’s jumping in with both feet. The ASCC is designed to incorporate a powerful front-mounted, V10 engine and a new high-performance, rear-wheel drive-based version of Acura’s exclu- sive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive.

Audi Q7 V12 TDI The Q7 has a monstrously powerful 6.0L V12 TDI diesel engine that has already been announced for production overseas. In North America, Audi must now answer ques- tions of expected demand, emissions regulations, and the technology needed to meet them, before we see this 500-hp beast on our roads.

Honda Accord Coupe The Coupe concept definitely has a tire in the showroom. Since this is such a new design approach to one of the top-selling cars in North America, it is sig- nificant. The new design elements will likely apply to the four-door sedan, too. For this, Honda fans can be happy because the new style boasts an athletic stance and sculpted lower body that make it very distinctive. This should inject some “gotta have it” emo- tion into the mainstream Accord.

Lexus LF-A Lexus is jumping head-first into the performance pool, so the new “F” line will need a high-end sports car. The LF-A is expected to be it. The goal is to create a supercar with world-class performance that is uniquely Lexus. It is powered by a high-revving 500-plus horsepower V10 engine. Lexus is touting a probable 200-mph top speed for the LF-A due to the horsepower, aerodynamics and technology. Lexus says this is close to the car they intend to bring to market.

Toyota FT-HS With such a good reaction to the Lexus GS 450h hybrid, Toyota will likely slate the 400-hp hybrid-V6 FT-HS as the long-awaited replacement for the Supra. Toyota asked its California design team to create a mid-priced sports car that integrates ecology and emotion in a concept that addresses the question, “what is a suitable sports car for the 21st century, that addresses safety, ecology and social responsibility?” The answer is the Toyota FT-HS.

New trends in car colours H OT C ON E P T S & AR TREND Silver streak mica, black sand pearl, indigo ink. What car colour would you choose and are you part of the trend?

by Will Fong BUZZ

ilver is still the most popular car colour in Canada and the world according to the DuPont 2006 Global Color Popularity Report, an S authority on vehicle colour trends. Silver has dominated since overtaking green in 2000, but more vibrant colours like blue and red are growing and consumers are demanding choices. Currently silver is the most popular choice among 19% of buyers, followed by white at 16%, gray and black tied at 13% each, blue and red also tied at 11% each, light brown at 7%, green at 4%, and finally white pearl and yellow/gold both at 3%. As many as 40 percent of consumers would actually switch brands for a specific colour, according to a national poll commissioned by DuPont Automotive Systems, so colour offerings have become increasingly important.

HOT trends... According to DuPont, watch for the following car colour trends now through 2009:

A Silver with tints of cool blue and green, or warm and light brown metallic effects - softer silvers overall A Gray infused with more hues in red, blue and purple A Colourful effect pigments to put deep and intense black shades in a different light A Stronger, chromatic colour in light, medium and dark blues across all vehicle segments A Warmer reds crossed with orange to create new colour spaces A Deep brown with new color highlights and grayed- off effects as a luxury fashion colour A Acceptance of bright yellow and orange

“Over the past few years, many buyers concerned about resale value stuck to safe colours, such as silver - although silver also represents technology and the future. Now, consum- ers are ready to make a change, starting with infusions of colour into neutrals,” says Karen Surcina, colour marketing and technology manager with DuPont Automotive.

What will drive colour trends in the future? Typically the bottom half of the top ten colours point to the growth trend for future colours, but ultimately consumers will decide. More than ever we want to personalize any expression of ourselves. When it comes to car colours, we’re definitely not in Kansas any more.
