Discovering the Lost Race Story: Writing Science Fiction, Writing Temporality This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia 2008 Karen Peta Hall Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Discipline of English and Cultural Studies School of Social and Cultural Studies ii Abstract Genres are constituted, implicitly and explicitly, through their construction of the past. Genres continually reconstitute themselves, as authors, producers and, most importantly, readers situate texts in relation to one another; each text implies a reader who will locate the text on a spectrum of previously developed generic characteristics. Though science fiction appears to be a genre concerned with the future, I argue that the persistent presence of lost race stories – where the contemporary world and groups of people thought to exist only in the past intersect – in science fiction demonstrates that the past is crucial in the operation of the genre. By tracing the origins and evolution of the lost race story from late nineteenth-century novels through the early twentieth-century American pulp science fiction magazines to novel-length narratives, and narrative series, at the end of the twentieth century, this thesis shows how the consistent presence, and varied uses, of lost race stories in science fiction complicates previous critical narratives of the history and definitions of science fiction. In examining the implicit and explicit aspects of temporality and genre, this thesis works through close readings of exemplar texts as well as historicist, structural and theoretically informed readings. It focuses particularly on women writers, thus extending previous accounts of women’s participation in science fiction and demonstrating that gender inflects constructions of authority, genre and temporality. -

Bölgenin yerleşim dokusu, tarih içerisinde önemli değişimler geçirmiş, yıllar boyunca ortaya çıkan kültürel katmanlar değişerek günümüzdeki yoğun yerleşim özelliğine kavuşmuştur. Geçmişten beri oluşan bu değişim ve tarihi birikim, günümüzde fiziksel açıdan tam olarak görünebilir durumda değildir. Ancak kültürel olarak bölgenin özelliğini yansıtan ve alanın geçmişi ile ilgili bilgiler veren kayıtlar olmaları açısından sokak adları birer belge olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu kapsamda, Beşiktaş İlçesi’ndeki 23 mahallede toplam 1060 adet sokak adı (yolakadı) incelenmiştir. Sokak adlarında, peyzajın doğal ve kültürel bileşenlerini oluşturan etmenlerle ilgili adlandırmalar peyzaj terimi olarak tanımlanmış ve elde edilen terimler; arazi örtüsü, bitki, doğa olayları, donatı, kültürel öğeler, mevsim, su ve topoğrafya gibi sınıflamalar altında derlenmiştir. Advancement of the Modern State through Education: Bulgarians at Robert College 1863-1912 Paulin Draganova June 2, 2018 Draganova 2 INTRODUCTION In the struggle of Bulgaria preceding the independence and after, the education Bulgarian students received at Robert College influenced the future direction of Bulgaria as a nation-state. The opportunity that Robert College provided was unique and appealing to Bulgarian students because of the location of the college and the quality of its education. Konstantin Stoilov, Stefan Panaretov, Todor Ivanchov, and Ivan Bagarov exemplify the types of men that graduated Robert College and actively had the opportunity to impact Bulgaria through their careers. Robert College’s qualities as a college that was American and taught curriculum that was American provided the ideas of modernity to their students. Through the use of ethnic identity to group students and the promotion of Bulgarian, the vernacular language for Bulgarian students in an academic and recognized setting, Robert College fostered nationalism that strengthened Bulgaria’s political and social environment to establish an independent democratic, market- oriented, modern nation-state. ROBERT COLLEGE’S IMPACT ON BULGARIA CAME FROM SO MANY BULGARIANS ATTENDING THE COLLEGE When Robert College was founded in 1863, Bulgaria was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Bulgarian students attended it before Bulgaria had gained independence from the Ottoman Empire and in the following years when the Third Bulgarian State was established. Robert College opened in Constantinople at a time when there was no quality education being offered to the Bulgarian subjects of the Ottoman Empire. Robert College provided an education that was located close to the Bulgarian provinces, and the education was at a high level, on par with American colleges at the time. -

International Journal of Progressive Education, Volume 17 Number 1, 2021 © 2021 INASED Experience of Primary School Teachers With Inclusion Students in the Context of Teaching Mathematics: A Case Study* Mehmet Emin Durmuş i Ministry of National Education Yusuf Ergen ii Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University Abstract This study investigated experiences of primary school teachers with inclusion students in the context of teaching mathematics. In the study the phenomenology design, which is one of the qualitative research designs, was used. The participants were determined by criterion-based sampling method. The participants of the study consisted of 21 primary school teachers with inclusion students. Research data were collected by a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers. Content analysis method was used for data analysis. The study found that the participants mostly used rough evaluation forms in order to determine the gains when preparing IEP. In addition, most of the participants stated that they needed help in preparing IEP and they received the most of the help from school counselors. The participants stated that they mostly used demonstration, teaching with play and drama methods and that they could practice with inclusion students only during breaks, during social activities times or in the hours in the support training room apart from mathematic class. Moreover, it was found that most of the participants measured verbally gains of the inclusion students by question and answer method. It was also concluded that inadequacy of the time was the most common problem they encountered in the process of learning-teaching and assessment for the mathematics class.
