It is, therefore, of immense significance to increase the level of support that these two academic fields receive and to contribute them academically. This book, in this specific context, attempts to provide critical insights into new trends in a wide range of academic disciplines including literature, education, political sciences, philosophy, psychology, and cultural studies. It also aims to create a platform in order to facilitate, motivate and encourage cooperation around the shared values of scientific and academic rationality and freedom in the digital age. We believe that this book will make a great contribution to the literature since it is a unique combination of expertise and hard work and consists of interdisciplinary academic studies by valuable academics across distinctive academic fields. We herewith would like to state that we owe a special debt of gratitude to all our contributors for their generosity with time and patience and that this volume would not have been possible without their support and effort. He observed political relations and wanted to share his experience with the Florentine Republic statesman Lorenzo De Medici. The Prince (1513-1984) and The Discourses (1531-1984) are his famous books, especially The Prince contains his political recommendations. According to Machiavelli, “a prince who wishes to retain his power must learn not to be good, and to use, or not to use, that ability according to necessity” (Machiavelli, 2008: 255). The prince should not see himself bound by any value, morality or metaphysics. Because of circumstances will force him, he will have to act in the opposite way to higher values. So, “it is useful to seem faithful, frank, humane, compassionate and pious… thus he needs a flexible mind…” (Machiavelli, 2008: 283). If we look briefly from Machiavelli’s point of view we see that there were no previous right or wrong political behaviors, but successful or unsuccessful political behaviors in terms of the benefits provided by the results. Today, Machiavelli’s political thoughts and advices are known as Machiavellianism. Machiavellians are people who act in their own interest and that ethics are not the main driving force in their actions (Robinson & Shaver, 1973). Machiavellians can manipulate others and use tools in their own hands or in their environment to achieve their goals, so they can act morally or immorally, simultaneously or depending on the situation. In a given situation, Machiavellians are ethically conscious of what is right or wrong, but they are cynical, unscrupulous, cunning, manipulative, cynical, deceitful, amoral and ruthless for their ends (Yunus et al., 2012; Paal & Bereczkei, 2007). They calculate their personal interest and decide to act on their own strategies and they are flexible enough to change their way of action and their means. Christie and & Geis (1970), the Mach IV scale they developed, measured the Machiavellian personality of the students and found that the high Machiavellians were more persuasive,

  • An Interpretation of Some Unpublished in Situ and Recorded Rum Seljuk 13Th C. External and Internal Figural Relief Work on the Belkıs (Aspendos) Palace, Antalya
GEPHYRA 8 2011 143–184 Terrance Michael Patrick DUGGAN An interpretation of some unpublished in situ and recorded Rum Seljuk 13th c. external and internal figural relief work on the Belkıs (Aspendos) Palace, Antalya Abstract: This article is divided into four parts. Firstly, it notes the precedent provided by the conversion of the Roman theatre at Bosra in Syria into an Ayyubid Palace, for the conversion of the Roman theater into the Rum Seljuk palace at Belkis–Aspendos and the known extensive use made of Syrian trained architects for important architectural projects by Rum Seljuk Sul- tans in the first half of the 13th c. Secondly, the two bands of Seljuk low relief depictions of fe- lines and a deer on a series of re–carved Roman limestone blocks on the exterior wall by the door leading to the southern köşk–pavilion erected above the parados and upon the lintel over this door, discovered by the author in 2007, extending over a length of nearly 10 m are de- scribed and the deliberate pecking of the surface of these low relief depictions it is suggested, was to provide bonding for applied painted stucco carved relief–work that completed this relief work on the exterior palace facade. The third section describes the painted Seljuk tympanum relief sculpture made of stucco plaster that concealed the Roman relief carving of Dionysus in the pediment of the sceanae frons in the 13th c. A sculptural relief depiction of a nude female figure which was fortunately recorded by Charles Texier early in the 19th c.

THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS by Hüsamettin ŞİMŞİR Submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Sabancı University June 2018 © Hüsamettin Şimşir 2018 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS Hüsamettin Şimşir M.A Thesis, June 2018 Thesis Supervisor: Dr. Fac. Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period.

We started the day with an assembly organised by Years Reception, One and Two. They told the whole school about autumn traditions around the world, for example Thanksgiving and Halloween. In the spirit of thanksgiving, we collected dry foods, milk, fruit juice, cheese and toiletries. The Year 6 chil- dren from the Etiler Campus delivered our donations to the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Little Sisters distribute the goods to the needy in Istanbul. On the same day, it was Breast Cancer Awareness Day. We had a Bake Sale to raise money for this important cause. APRIL 2016 Seventy Sixth Edition BISI COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER GUIDING STATEMENT OF THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ISTANBUL The British International School Istanbul provides a caring international environment, fostering cultural diversity. Individual students achieve their full academic potential, inspired to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens of the global community. YOUR COMMUNITY! YOUR NEWS! All photos can be found on our BISI Flickr Account: https://www.flickr.com/photos/britishschoolistanbul/sets/ 1 Message from the Pre/Primary School As our Guiding Statements encourage, we are dedicated to ‘educate students in a stimulating environ- ment to the highest possible standards’, we are committed to ‘strive for continuous improvement’ and ‘obtain accreditation from international organisations’. To this end, the school undertook its second British Standards Overseas (BSO) inspection using the service provider School Inspection Service (SIS). This type of inspection will now occur every three years and demonstrates our commitment to continuous school improvement. The report will be published shortly. Before the Spring holiday, all the Key Stage 2 children participated in our Cross Country sporting event. The most successful runners were chosen to compete in the Istanbul Schools’ League (ISL) against other schools in Istanbul. Mr Huegel, Head of PE, and his team, organised the ISL Cross Country event in the Belgrade Forest. Our students performed exceptionally well: congratulations students! As our Guiding Statements inspire, we ‘educate students to be respectful of, and knowledgeable about, and be involved in their local and international communities’. The PTA asked families to send in stationery gifts for children in the local community as part of the Children’s Day celebrations.
