Alle erreichbaren Werke, die für dieses Forschungsfeld konstitutiv sind, wurden hierfür umfas- send bibliographisch erschlossen. In dieser Verdichtung eröffnet die Sammlung einen systematischen und weiterführenden Zugang zur wissenschaftlichen Beschäftigung mit der Entwicklungsgeschichte der christlichen Kabbala. Damit stellt sie ein unentbehrliches Arbeitsins- trument für die Erforschung der christlich-jüdischen Geistesgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit dar. Die Bibliographie dokumentiert zugleich alle diejenigen Texte, die für die Geschichte der christlichen Kabbala, Bände 1-3, benutzt worden sind. Die aufgeführten Titel sind dabei nicht alle in der Darstellung zi- tiert; die Zitation richtete sich nach dem Duktus der Darstellung. Die vorliegende Bibliographie erhebt keinen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit. Sie ist wie folgt gegliedert: Im allgemeinen Teil A wird die Literatur systematisch aufgelistet, die als Rahmen und Grundlage der christ- lichen Kabbala dient; es wird zwischen Primär- und Sekundärliteratur unterschieden. In den folgenden Teilen I, II und III richtet sich die Bibliographie nach der Gliederung der drei Bände der Geschichte der christlichen Kabbala. Die einzelnen Kapitel sind unterteilt nach im en- geren Sinne kabbalistischer und weiterer verwendeter Literatur, je nach primären und sekundären Texten getrennt. Die Ordnung der Kapi- tel der Geschichte der christlichen Kabbala ist im Großen und Ganzen chronologisch; wo sie nicht eingehalten ist, wird an der chronologisch passenden Stelle auf die jeweiligen behandelten Autoren verwiesen. Die Primärliteratur ist nach den behandelten Autoren und dort (abgesehen von vorangestellten Angaben zu Spezialbibliographien oder Gesamt- ausgaben) chronologisch, die Sekundärliteratur alphabetisch nach Au- toren geordnet. Thus, somanodia, psychanodia and nou- sanodia are examples not only of ascent terminology but also of broad- er religious structures. 2. HEIKHALOT LITERATURE:PRECEDENTS AND OFFSHOOTS The theme of the ascent to the divine realm is well represented in Jewish sources of late antiquity: in inter-testamental Jewish literature, in some rabbinic discussions and in so-called Heikhalot literature, written some time between the third and the eighth centuries.15 As mentioned above, the material pertinent to this theme has been analyzed time and again by many scholars, including Culianu, and I shall not summarize here the vast literature on the topic. For our discussion it will suffice to mention that this ascent consists of the elevation of some form of body, perhaps similar to an astral body, to the supernal realm; hence, the term psychanodia would be a problematic description of such discus- sions. In any case, I am not aware of any linguistic terminology that will allow us to assume that those Jewish authors had in mind the ascension of the soul devoid of any form, despite the fact that in Midrashic litera- ture, the soul of man was described as ascending on high every night in order to give an account of his daily deeds and sometimes to draw some form of strength.16 This nightly ascent of the soul is in no way es- chatological, nor does it point to a mystical experience of close contact with the divine essence.

Foreword. —Although the Cabala belongs to the past, it nevertheless demands our attention on account of the interest taken in it by men like Raymond Lully, the "Doctor Illuminatus" as he was styled (died 1315) : John Picus di Miran- dola (1463-1494); John Reuchlin (1455-1522); Cornelius Henry Agrippa von Nettesheim ( 1486- 1535) ; John Baptist von Helmont (1577-1644) ; the English scholars Robert Fludd (1574-1637) and Henry More (1614-1687). How much The- ophrastus Paracelsus (1493-1541) and Jacob Boehme (1575-1624), called "Philosophus Teu- tonicus," were influenced by cabalistic doctrines, is difficult to state.     THE TALMUD AND BIBLE BELIEVERS Willie Martin The supreme hatred of Talmudic Judaism is reserved for and directed against the hated "adherers to the text" of Scripture who are, thus, accused of spurning the words of the Pharisee "Sages," as enshrined in the Babylonian Talmud. These "adherers" to the Bible are classified as the primary enemies of Judaism. They are all "idolators," "heathen," "goy." They rank not only as animals - like the rest of the non-Jewish human race, but as the lowest and most despised form of life. The Talmud frequently refers to Bible adherents scathingly as "Samaritans" and "Cutheans," phraseology similarly used to excoriate Christians. The Sadducees were the first of these enemies. They were the constant opponents of the Pharisees and their imported Babylonian paganism, misrepresented by the Pharisees as the Tradition of the Elders, the "Oral Law" ostensibly transmitted privately to Moses and on down, superseding anything written in the Bible. In the six years of civil war between the Pharisees and Alexander Jannaeus, King and High Priest of Jerusalem, 50,000 were killed on both sides before this Sadducean ruler succumbed, and his widow Salome turned affairs over to the Pharisees in 79 B.C. Her brother, Simon ben Shetah, had been waiting for such an opportunity. The continued civil war resulted in the sons of Alexander Jannaeus, Hyrcanus and Aristobulus, in 63 B.C., going hat in hand to Pompey, Caesar's Roman General in Syria, asking him to invade Palestine and slaughter their respective opponents. This is how Rome happened to be in power when Christ was born.

The secret science of the Kabbala, which hitherto had assumed a modest deportment and been of a harmless character, began to foment discord in Ben Adret's time, ensnare the intelligence and lead astray the weak. What it lacked in intrinsic truth and power of conviction, it endeavored to supply by presumptuousness. It had already spread from Gerona, its original seat, and from northern Spain by way of Segovia to southern Spain, as far as the Castilian capital, Toledo, the Jewish community of which had before strenuously opposed obscurantism. In the city of Toledo the Kabbala won the adherence, among others, of one man who, by his noble birth, his princely state, his high position, his wealth and learning, gave it great weight. This man, whose influence is even now not fully recognized, was Todros ben Joseph Halevi, of the noble Toledan family of Abulafia (born 1234, died after 1304).

Descended from a lawyer's family, he became council scribe in the Parliament of Paris, and was in 1737 provided with a sinecure canonship in the metropolitan church, but rapidly rose to distinction, and in 1759 was made bishop of Vence. In 1763 he was transferred to the see of Macon. After the concordat of 1801 he obtained the bishopric of Autun, where he died, September 8, 1802. The first consul (Napoleon Bonaparte) esteemed him highly, and demanded from the pope the cardinal's hat for him. His literary remains, however, are scanty, consisting mainly of a few funeral sermons on distinguished individuals, viz. Oraison funebre de Ferdinand VI et Marie de Portugal, roi et reine d'Espagne (1760), and Oraison funebre de M. le Duc de Bourgogne (1761). See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Generale, 36:479. Moreau, Jean a French theologian, was born at Laval near the opening of the 16th century. He was educated at Paris, and when about thirty years of age was appointed professor of theology at the University of Paris.
