The system has since expanded to become the backbone of the regional transit network with 58 route-kilometres of track and 45 stations. Today, on the average weekday, over 320,000 passengers are carried on the existing LRT network, making it the most successful LRT system in North America. The Green Line is the· next LRT line to be built in Calgary. In 2014 Calgary City Council committed $520 million to this project to start initial implementation of the Green Line. On July 24, 2015 the Government of Canada made a historic funding co mmitment to the Green Line of up to $1.53 billion, contingent on matching provincial and municipal funds. The project was a catalyst to improve transit, pedestrian facilities, cycling infrastructure, traffic flow and enhance development opportunities across west Calgary. West LRT included 6 new CTrain stations, over 8 km of double track and 1,192 park and ride stalls. West LRT was 95% funded by the Government of Alberta through the Municipal Sustainability In itiative and Green TRIP. Calgarians respond positively to improved rapid transit options Add ing West LRT resulted in a large jumps in transit use for those communities in close proximity to the LRT line. In some cases upwards of 30% of residents now take transit to work (City-wide average is 18%). RouteAhead is The City's 30-year, $13 billion strategic plan for transit and includes new customer service oriented rapid transit projects. Investing in Mobility, The City's 10 year capital plan, showcases the major projects and annual programs around infrastructure to meet Calgarians' transportation needs as they work, shop, and play. Now that the Committee has forwarded Administration's proposal to the full City Council, the intent of this letter is to confirm our recommendations and ensure that all of Council is aware of them. As you are all aware, we are strong supporters of moving forward with the Green Line including a crossing of the Bow River, and we have and continue to recommend changes be made to ensure the entire Green Line maximizes its potential as a significant city building project. With that in mind we again propose the following recommendations which we would encourage Council to consider as amendments to the Administration recommendation made to the Green Line Committee. We would also like to reiterate our strong thanks and support for the changes made in the Eau Claire station area, and ask that Council formally adopt this station solution within their decision. Recommendation 1: Ensuring Successful Construction by Stage-Gating Stage 1 Given its size and scope, Council has prudently discussed the importance of cost management on the Green Line project.

    Service Alerts – Digital Displays TriMet has digital displays at most MAX Light Rail stations to provide real-time arrival information as well as service disruption/delay messaging. Some of the displays are flat screens as shown to the right. Others are reader boards. Due to space, the messages need to be as condensed as possible. While we regularly post the same alert at stations along a line, during the Rose Quarter MAX Improvements we provided more specific alerts by geographical locations and even individual stations. This was because the service plan, while best for the majority of riders, was complex and posed communications challenges. MAX Blue Line only displays MAX Blue Line disrupted and frequency reduced. We all want our neighbourhood looking its very best, and well maintained lawns and boulevards go a long way to ensure that our community is safe, clean and attractive. Yard maintenance falls under Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004, which can be reviewed in detail at www.calgary.ca/CSPS/ABS/Pages/Bylaws-by-topic/Yards.aspx. We have listed a few of the main topics addressed in the bylaw below: Grass and Weeds Owners/occupiers of a property are generally responsible for caring for and maintaining their property and adjacent areas such as boulevards, sidewalks and lanes, up to the centre of the back alley. Keep weeds under control and don’t allow them to spread onto other properties. Any invasive plants and noxious weeds must be destroyed, but should not be placed in a composter as this will contribute to the seed spreading. Use pesticides responsibly, consider chemical- free alternatives, and advise your neighbours before you use a pesticide. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning or after it cools off in the evening. Please make sure water isn’t running onto the street or sidewalk. For water-saving tips, visit the City of Calgary Water Services web site at www.calgary.ca/waterservices. Trees and Shrubs Trees and shrubs on public sidewalks and boulevards are maintained by the City of Calgary and are protected under the Tree Protection Bylaw.

These issues and challenges were identified through an extensive stakeholder engagement, which was conducted as part of The City of Calgary’s Goods Movement Strategy. The findings of this report will be used to explore potential opportunities for addressing the issues and challenges, through a subsequent review of how other jurisdictions address the issues and challenges and through a literature review of best practices. The engagement used several means to gather information from stakeholders in the Calgary goods movement community. These comprised: • Informal one-page surveys that were distributed at the February 2017 project kick-off meetings, which were held at meetings of goods movement and economic development industry associations and other groups. • One-on-one interviews that were conducted with stakeholders. These stakeholders comprised a wide range of perspectives: the provincial and federal governments, infrastructure and facility owners, emergency services, utilities, retailers, distributors, carriers, couriers, aggregates producers and industry associations. • Stakeholder meetings, which were held with four groups: o Operational Advisory Group (OAG), an external body set up to advise the Strategy on short term issues and solutions.

    TAC Sustainable Urban Transportation Award Submission by City of Calgary West LRT Project: Enabling Mobility and Transit Oriented Development INTRODUCTION The City of Calgary opened a new light rail transit (LRT) line in December 2012, marking a key milestone in sustainable transportation for Calgary that we can offer as a national case study. Calgary is recognized as an expansive and growing prairie city, but less well known are The City’s vision, plans and efforts in moving towards a more sustainable future. Sustainability principles and considerations are now embedded in all plans and investments. The City is making decisions and building infrastructure today that will affect citizens for the next 100 years or more. A case in point is the newest LRT line routing which will be highly influential to where and how people will live, work and move around the city. The West LRT Project is the largest capital project ever undertaken by The City, and it’s the sole new transit line developed in Calgary in over 20 years. Many aspects of the project are remarkable, both in terms of project approach (construction practices, stakeholder engagement, and project financing) and outcomes (expanded mobility choices, shifting urban form). The 8.2km long LRT line extension from downtown to the west serves several communities in Southwest Calgary and provides the most convenient access to the greatest number of people. The chosen alignment allows the shortest possible feeder bus trips for travel to and from the LRT stations for those people who are beyond walking distance. The new transit line enables mobility and mobility choice for the area’s current 105,000 residents, and for the rest of the city’s 1.2 million residents to access that area.
