My Dear Friends, Whom will you be supporting in the very near future? Will they be sporting red or blue? This is a serious matter! If I give you two names as a clue it may help you to know what I am on about. They are Benitez and Mourinho. They will be facing each other at the end of April and the beginning of May in the European Cup semi-finals. Why write about football? Have my two days in Preston affected my mind? No! But these two gentlemen’s careers can help us to understand the Church’s season of Pentecost which we celebrate on 15th May. There were troubles at their respective football clubs, morale was not as high as it could be and success was not what was expected. Hence they were brought in. Both came as encouragers, facilitators, strategists and trainers to turn round the fortunes of the clubs. They were called in because they had the skills required. Now we go back to Pentecost. Jesus had promised the ‘Paraclete’ – the word in St. John’s Gospel used to describe the Holy Spirit. A Paraclete is someone who is ‘called in’ to put new life, spirit, enthusiasm, boldness and commitment into a struggling group, to change their attitude and to motivate them. The disciples were not exactly a winning team. They were still in the ‘dressing room’ afraid to face the opposition. They did not dare go out. But then the Holy Spirit swept in quite literally, blew their minds and set them on fire. They went straight out onto the streets to face the world, listening to the instructions given by the Holy Spirit, articulate where previously they had been stuck for words, courageous instead of cowardly. They were changed men and women with the Holy Spirit managing and inspiring them, and what is more they were irrepressible and unstoppable no matter what was thrown at them. They were the same people but now they were empowered. They had such an affect that they were accused of ‘turning the world upside down’. That was then. But the Holy Spirit is the same today as then, and does the same now as then. The question is ‘who are in the team he manages now?’ Am I, are you? When we allow the Holy Spirit to be our manager, equipping us for our God-given task, directing us and giving us the words to say we will be seen to be witnesses demonstrating God’s love for His people who will notice the difference. It will certainly prompt comment. A Spirit-filled Church is one that is so empowered that it cannot be ignored and it can be uncomfortable to have around, but it is the only one that will be truly effective for God. The Holy Spirit is the ‘manager’ we all need and the only one who can inspire and equip us for our place in God’s Team, the Church of Jesus Christ. Forget the red and blue (and yellow as well). Join the winning team – nothing can prevail against it. We have Jesus’ word for that. With every blessing. Your fellow team member,
