Nightwing News The Newsletter of the Southeastern Bat Diversity Network Volume 108, Number 1 Spring 2018 PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS Katrina Morris I hope you were able to attend the most recent Joint Bat Working Group meeting in Roanoke, VA this past March. A summary of the meeting is included in this newsletter in case you missed it. I want to extend a huge THANK YOU to the host committee who put together this excellent meeting. Rick Reynolds and his crew faced unforeseen challenges during planning and they were able to pull off a meeting with great new information, valuable discussions and a good introduction to the beautiful town of Roanoke. The spring meeting was attended by close to 400 people! I am amazed at how much our regional bat working groups have grown over the past ten years. With this increase in growth, I would expect an increase in participation in the leadership of these working groups. But that’s not happening at the same pace. If you look back at the history of SBDN, you’ll see the same names repeated over and over again: Mary Kay Clark, Tim Carter, Joy O’Keefe, etc. It’s understandable to have the same people on the list year after year when these groups were just getting started and bat biologists were rare. But now, 22 years later with a substantial increase in the amount of bat work and bat biologists, the SBDN leadership should be filled with new faces. As I mentioned at our SBDN business meeting in Roanoke, we will be having elections this fall. -

The modern comic derives from what many term "the golden age," specifically with the introduction of Superman. The "man of steel" triggered a fascination with comic book heroes; heroes who took flawed forms in the 1960s. Today, the comic serves not only as a vehicle for super-heroes, but also as a channel for political thought, education, alternative culture, and critiques of society. Contemporary interest in the comic trade, spurred by conventions and independent distribution, fosters a creative environment in which new genres and edgy content drive the scene. This study looks at how each iteration of the character differs within the historical context of the character while also examining the impact social identity has on the character and story within the text. Social identity is how people might see themselves within a group of their peers and their culture (Leary and Tangney, 2012). This identity most often includes a person’s ethnicity, class, sexuality, sex, and gender (2012). All aspects of social identity have significant impacts on the livelihoods of people and their peers; therefore, it becomes important when studying popular culture to be mindful of what these social identities mean within certain contexts. Writing good comedy is extremely difficult. Then there is the daunting task of writing comedic material that is not only funny, but smart, witty, classy, poignant, thoughtful, emotional and, most importantly, fun to read. There are only a few people in this world that can accomplish this task. Chris Dee is one of those few. Fan fiction writing is, at its best, a homage to the characters and ideas expressed in a mainstream body of work; be it a movie, a television show, or even a comic book. It is also a chance for a creative writer to expand the limits normally associated with the original, whether those limitations lie in the medium itself, or in the original's creator. In a time when many of the older Batman and Catwoman fans have become increasingly disenfranchised from the “official” product being released, Chris Dee's Cat Tales offers a refreshing return to the one thing these fans fell in love with in the first place: the characters. In the earliest incarnations, mainstream comics relied on the heroic deeds of its heroes to define the characters. When it's done right, the result is an action-packed, enjoyable piece of escapist entertainment. However, somewhere along the line, the fans of most comic books grew up and started asking for a more in-depth look at the people behind the superhero personas.
