The watches extended from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. The fourth watch was from 3:00 to 6:00 am. It was during the fourth watch that Jesus came walking on the water to rescue his frightened apostles who were in their boat, struggling to survive a severe storm. Jesus got into the boat to calm the sea and their fears. I received a new insight into this story when I attended a lecture by the famous Dr. Elisabeth Kubler‐Rose. She said it’s an ideal time to visit the hospital between 3:00 am and 6:00 am in the morning—a dark and lonely time when the sleeping pills wear off. Then the patients often experience depressive worries about their health, their families and their future. We hope the ill, injured, or those afraid will find courage, knowing Jesus still walks with them “during the fourth watch.” Father James McKarns Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 STEWARDSHIP & THE Stewardship....Live It! MOTHER TERESA PROJECT... By Ed Laughlin Stewardship: a way of life for our St. Bernadette Parish Family… “But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me’!" Matthew 14: 29 STEWARDSHIP & PETER’S TRUST ... In today’s Gospel from the Book of Matthew we hear the remarkable story of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee. Saint Peter reflects his faith in the Lord when he says, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus says simply, “Come.” We do not know if Peter stepped into the water or jumped and it does not matter. His faith and trust in the Lord allows Peter, also, to begin to walk on the water. Clearly when Peter’s focus is on Christ, he is able to accomplish this. However, when Peter loses his focus and begins to The stated goals and purpose of the Project observe and think about the storm raging around him, he Mother Teresa Ministry is “Helping to feed the hungry begins to sink. The leadership has changed through the years, however. The current coordinators are Veronica Lacoparra and Kathy Cole. We thank them for their gift of time to keep this great ministry going. This is not to diminish in any way the wonderful generosity of those who share food and have shared through the years. Nevertheless, it can be noticed... the number of people NOT carrying bags into the church. It seems we can do so much better. Let’s try—next collection is the weekend of August 26-27. Ω Financial stewardship for the month of August will be reported in the bulletin of Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017.
