Sunday, June 8, 2014 owerful God, whose ways are Pbeyond our knowing, we long to grow spiritually. We are thirsty for the living water you have promised to those who seek. We are eager to catch the Spirit, to be set on fire with confidence and trust to use the gifts you have given. Let Pentecost happen again in this gathering of your people. Inspire us to witness to your love and prophesy in your name. Give us courage to speak of your deeds of power, and to take the risks of daring discipleship. Amen.

*Hymn #476 ”O Worship the King, All Glorious Above!” • we confess • *Call to Confession

*Prayer of Confession (together) Eternal God, we admit that we are seldom amazed and astonished. We take for granted much that was once thought to be impossible. We are confident consumers of human ingenuity. Sometimes we think we have no need of you. Matters of the spirit are far down on our list of concerns. We are even suspicious of those who claim to see visions and skeptical of those who seem carried away in their devotion to the faith. Yet we long for something more than our daily routines. O Spirit, come to save us from ourselves. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

*Declaration of Pardon Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel. People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Congregational response (together) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen. *Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed (together) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Adult Discipleship & Fellowship 13 spotlight on missions featured mission partner: Drs. Leslie & Cynthia Morgan

ince 1989, Drs. Les and Cindy Morgan have been Sserving as Missionaries of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Bangladesh, home of the fourth largest Muslim population in the world. In 1992 they helped the PC (USA) establish a formal partnership with the Church of Bangladesh (CoB), a denomination of over 20,000 members in 103 congregations and since then have nurtured and helped carry out the church’s health ministries. Christians make up less than one half of 1 percent of the population of Bangladesh. They advise and train workers for the health programs of CoB, including health programs in five regions of the country, two hospitals, and two nursing schools. They also regularly advise the Christian Mission Hospital (CMH) in Rajshahi in both hospital management and patient care. CMH is an 80-bed facility and has a Nursing Institute offering a three-year, government-certified training program for 75 students. Besides advising on patient care at the bedside at CMH, Les and Cindy care for patients in small community clinics in various CoB program areas. Directly caring for patients gives the Morgans firsthand knowledge of the health issues faced by the people the church is called to serve. An important part of the Morgans’ work is to nurture the spiritual capacity of the CoB to carry out its health ministries in the name of Christ. At St. Andrew’s Theological College in Dhaka, Les teaches a weekly class on the Healing Ministry of the Church. The class explores the physical, psychological, social, environmental, and spiritual dimensions of health. It helps prepare future church leaders to engage in these issues with sound theological understanding. Cindy teaches a class on Spiritual Formation. She leads quarterly spiritual retreats for the students, and on occasion helps lead retreats for the CoB clergy. The Morgans also lead retreats for the health workers of the CoB to strengthen their capacity as servants of Christ. The Morgans have raised three children in Bangladesh. Their oldest, Laura, is expecting her first child in November; and their youngest, Stewart, will be getting married in August. They lost their middle child, Everett, to bone cancer in 2008. They write that “although living in Bangladesh is definitely a challenge, opportunities for service abound. Here we are blessed to be able to live out our passion - to embody the loving presence of Christ for those who suffer.” Contact their Mission Partner Advocate Maxine Perry at [email protected], 349-3282. www.churchofthepalms.org 19 Facilities Master Plan Update Recently the Session decided to embark upon a process to study the facility and property needs we have here on the campus at Church of the Palms. Our ministry puts great demands upon our buildings and so with the help of the Foundation of Church of the Palms we have retained the services of architect Michael Carlson. Michael will help us see how we can use our facilities and campus more effectively and efficiently and to determine what needs we might have for the future. Elders, staff and other church leaders will be involved over these next few weeks and months, studying and dreaming. We covet your prayers as we decide how best to use the great resources of our campus and buildings to facilitate our mission of Equipping Disciples for the Service of Christ. The process will continue into the fall, and we will update you, most certainly, on what discoveries we make.
