Since its founder Bobby Jones held the very first Augusta National Invitational Tournament in 1934, The Masters has had a special place in the hearts of all golf fans and enthusiasts alike. The springtime splendour of Augusta National never disappoints and probably never will. With such iconic moments in golfing history as Nicklaus’s charge in 1986, Faldo’s comeback in 1996 and Tiger’s chip-in in 2005, Augusta has an atmosphere and aura like no other place on earth. We think it’s only fitting that you get to sample that for yourself. WELCOME HISTORYWELCOME → →PACKAGESHISTORY → → ITINERARIESPACKAGE → PRESS → INFORMATION → VIEWING → CONTACT → A GOLF TOURNAMENT LIKE NO OTHER STEEPED IN TRADITION Augusta National Golf Club was founded by Bobby Jones, the legendary amateur champion, and Clifford Roberts, an astute investment banker in New York. The 365-acre property, originally Fruitland Nurseries, was purchased in 1931 for $70,000. Jones helped design the golf course, working alongside the esteemed British architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Jones’s popularity within the game helped attract golf’s biggest stars to the Masters, beginning with the inaugural event in 1934. Since then, some of golf’s most memorable moments – both comebacks and collapses – have taken place on the lush course. The Masters Tournament has been held the first full week of April every year since its inception, except for 1943-1945. During this time, the tournament was cancelled due to World War II and the course was used to raise cattle and turkeys to help the war effort. Augusta National is closed all summer, from the third week of May until mid-October, primarily for renovations. Although a single performance at the Masters can define a player’s career, the game’s greatest players have won multiple titles, including Jack Nicklaus (6), Arnold Palmer (4), Tiger Woods (4) and Sam Snead (3). Yes you might be prepared for the beauty, to witness the golfing test and see the world’s best players ply their trade but the scale and undulations of the place are unimaginable until you actually arrive on the property. Television can never quite capture the flow of the course, the rapid descent of the tenth and eleventh holes to the sunken golfing paradise that is Amen Corner and the draining climb back up to the eighteenth green. The place is unique. No one runs - top speed for all is a brisk walk. Spectators create their own grandstands by placing their portable seats at a vantage point of their choice and no one is allowed to carry a mobile phone. Spectator views are the most unfettered in the professional game because players, their caddies and a few rules officials are the only people allowed inside the ropes. It feels busy, especially in the merchandise area which is the only place on the planet official Masters products can be bought, but it retains a quaint feel in keeping with Georgia’s southern charm. And, although it is undoubtedly golf’s most glamorous major, the on course sustenance including Augusta’s famous Pimento cheese sandwiches are probably the most reasonably priced refreshments in world sport. HISTORY MAKER GOLF Championship Golf Game • Course Summaries Course Collection ONE Blackjack GC, Las Vegas NV / based on TPC SUMMERLIN TPC Summerlin’s layout, carved from a magnificent swath of rugged desert terrain by renowned golf course architect Bobby Weed, provides a good reference for the Blackjack GC. TPC Summerlin’s lush bentgrass greens, numerous water features and an abundance of pine trees all contrast dramatically with undisturbed desert washes. The course features four closing holes that deliver top flight golf drama. The final charge begins with the par 4, 15th hole – a drivable par 4 that will temp most players. If the tee shot misses the green, an “up and down” birdie is possible, but not easy, due to the severely elevated and undulated green – which is surrounded by five bunkers that regularly attract stray tee shots. The 16th hole is a relatively downhill par-5 that is reachable with two good shots. The green is guarded by water short of the green, and bunkers beyond. Only a mid-iron will be necessary for the second shot, with a birdie almost a certainty. A challenging and un-nerving par-3, the 17th hole plays downhill with the green guarded closely by a lake on the left and by bunkers on the right. Par is good score and birdies are rare, should players need to make up ground. The 18th is a well-designed and strategic finishing hole which moves right to left off the tee. The green is protected on the left by a lake. An aggressive tee shot with the driver can leave the player just a short iron to a very deep green from front to back.

BANKRUPT GOLF COURSES: AN HISTORICAL ANALYSIS AND STRATEGIES FOR REPURPOSING by BLAKE JEFFREY CONANT (Under the Direction of Ron Sawhill) ABSTRACT More than 800 golf courses have closed since 2003 and approximately 1,000 to 2,500 are projected to close in the next decade. Many of these courses are repurposed as high-end mixed-use development, high-density residential, or big-box development. The sustainable benefits the golf course once provided either diminish or leave completely. As our countryʼs 21st Century needs shift towards food, water, and energy security, bankrupt golf courses can offer repurposing opportunities to plan for those needs. The goal of golf course repurposing should be to provide similar or greater sustainable benefits as the golf course once did. Understanding how that land can be sustainably repurposed is vital for local communities, environments, and economies to thrive in the 21st Century. This thesis will offer suggestions, strategies, and solutions for repurposing bankrupt golf courses that have yet to be implemented in the United States. Spyglass Hill® Spyglass Hill is without question one of the top public golf courses in the U.S. Ranked #48 in the U.S, it is located on the Pebble Beach peninsula. The PGA TOUR®, consistently lists Spyglass Hill’s holes 6, 8 and 16 among the toughest on the TOUR, and during the 1999 US Amateur, the stroke average of the field during medal play was in excess of 79. Spanish Bay® The Links at Spanish Bay was built on vast sandy wasteland ideally suited for creating a true coastal Scottish links-style course. • 2011Traditions of Golf Challenge Study Guide
2011Traditions of Golf Challenge Study Guide HISTORY SECTION PRE - 20th Century “When did the game of golf start?” Golf originated in the 15th century in Scotland. Mary, Queen of Scots introduced the word “caddie” to the game. While playing golf, she was accompanied by a club-carrying young boy whom she called the “cadet”, or “caddie.” Players would hit a pebble around a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive club. “How were golf balls developed?” The first real golf ball was known as the “feathery”. The feathery was a leather sack filled by hand with boiled goose feathers, and stitched up and painted. The feathery golf ball period may have started as early as the 1400’s and ended in the early 1850’s. The arrival of the gutta percha ball in 1848 or “guttie”, as it was called, revolutionized the game and allowed golf’s spread to the masses. The guttie was made from rubber, which could be heated, and formulated into a ball. The next revolution in ball design came around 1905 with the patented "Haskell" ball, which is a composite of a solid core wound with thin strips of rubber. Some modern balls (the expensive ones) are made this way today. This ball performed much better than the gutty and could be made cheaply compared to earlier balls. In 1972 the first two-piece ball was introduced by Spalding. These are more popular with amateurs, as they are more durable and considered to be longer and straighter. Many professionals are still devoted to the softer covered balls, since they prefer the added spin for control as opposed to distance.
