GENEALOGY OF THE PAUL, CHOUTEAU AND COURSAULT FAMILIES THE PAUL FAMILY The present Island of Hayti, second in size of the West Indies, originally belonged to France under the name of San Domingo. It was the most productive and flourishing of the French Colonies and its capital city, "Cape Francaise," was known as the Paris of America. The white residents ,vere European French vvho possessed large plantations of sugar and coffee and owned many hundreds of slaves. Among these wealthy men was Eustache Paul who had been appointed by the French government Lieutenant Governor of the island. Mr. Paul was a great traveler and a man of fine education; he purchased large plantations, made frequent trips to Europe and educated his four children in Paris. The French Revolu tion extended itself to the colony; 1793 the negroes arose in revolt, massacred their owners, gained possession of the island and still govern it with the exception of a small por tion which was redeemed by France. Mr. Paul's family was in France when this occurred; with friends he made his escape to the seashore, embarked on a small schooner for Philadelphia, but overcome with worry and fatigue, he died at sea and ,vas buried in the ocean off the coast of North Carolina, 1793. Madame Veuve Paul remained in Paris, her daughters were educated at the U rsulines and her boys at the "Ecole Militaire Polytechnique." Mr. Fleury Generelly, an officer of Napoleon's army, residing in Paris, met Miss Emilie Sophie Paul and married her in Paris August, 1801. Having plenty of money and tiring of military life, he proposed to his mother-in-Ia,v to bring her family to the United States, as San Domingo ,vas no,v in too dilapidated a condition as a residence. They sailed for Philadelphia in 1802. Madame Paul and her daughter, Aglae, came with the Generelly family, but her t,vo sons remained at school and came to the United States in 1807-1808. They made their ,vay to the \Vest and settled in St. Louis, ,vhere they married. t-/I:r.
