FOR A FREE QUOTATION CONTACT MATTHEW WEBB 07917 785003 [email protected] WWW.MCWEBBCONSTRUCTION.CO.UK We Offer A Warm Welcome Good afternoon and welcome to the Rec for the second week running (weather permitting of course) in this Anglian Combination Premier Division game where we entertain Mattishall. Well, what a week that was, the one before we played Harleston. I’m certain some of you would have been surprised at the news on Monday 5th when Damian decided to resign as first team manager. Following the UEA defeat, he texted me saying he was considering his position and confirmed his resignation 48 hours later. I want to put on record that you won’t find a harder working manager at this level. His enthusiasm and professionalism for some reason just could not be transferred onto this pitch and he felt at this point in his tenure ship, the team should be challenging at the top end, not struggling at the other. He will be sadly missed, as will his father Keith and we wish you well in the future. No doubt he will be back in the management game pretty soon. This has also led to other departures. First to go was Robbie Fryers, who has joined Dussindale and Hellesdon Rovers. Robbie had been at the club for 7 years and was one of the few players who also took an interest in how the club was run off the field. He just felt he needed a fresh start now Damo had gone. Also, set to leave us, is Asa Swatman, who is set to join CEYMS. Asa was a keeper that Damo had wanted to get over here for a couple of years and he told me he has thoroughly enjoyed his time here. In fact, both players have said they made their decision with a heavy heart but one that they felt they needed to do. Despite there being no manager, and Asa was our keeper, we have to move quickly to replace him and we have done this by signing Chris Bird from Town. Chris was part of Sheringham’s Sterry Cup winning side in 2019 and is vastly experienced at this level. Anyway all this led to Paddy and I taking the reins for last Saturday’s game against Harleston, a job made even harder when we learnt during the week, they had made a couple of stellar signings (from and Lowestoft respectively). That said, I think those that were here last weekend, will agree the Lads played extremely well after being 2-0 down after 20 minutes and were probably the better side in the second half. Certainly Paddy & I felt very satisfied with the performance and the attitude of the players. That doesn’t detract from the awful run the first team is on…Three games 0 goals scored, 9 against. When’s the last time you can remember Blofield not scoring for three games? This needs to be addressed whether by me or Paddy or from the new man coming in. Yes, there will be a new face at the helm. We would have been interviewing this week and probably by now have a fair idea on who Damian’s replacement will be. More to follow on that in the next programme. Continued Over Page….. Welcome - Continued An awful week and weekend were complete when news come through of the Reserve’s losing their 100% winning start away at Frethorpe. Their 3-0 defeat was compounded by a red card to Aaron Barnes but by all accounts, the level of officiating left a lot to be desired. Reserve team manager has filed a report and we wait to see what happens. The Reserves have a weekend off but will be looking to get back to winning ways next week when they entertain AC Mill Lane Reserves. News from our sponsor is that they will be offering a discount to all members of Blofield United Football Club a 10% discount when they show their membership card. If you want to be a member, our annual fees are Single £10, Family £15. Please see anyone at the bar! Finally, Paddy’s future son in Law Nick Hannant recently took part in coastal walk challenge, covering 83.5 miles in just over 36 hours. The Coastal 83 as it was known started at Hunstanton and finished at Hopton, without stopping. I have seen video of Nick near the end and to be fair he was walking like Paddy does now but I’m sure you’d all agree it’s a great achievement. Nick was raising money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (where Claire works) and just under £5,000 was raised. If you want to add to the fund, please see Paddy or type in the link below to give online when you get home. https://www.justgiving.com/ team/Coastal83 Give the lads plenty of encouragement and support today as we look to get our season going again. MATTISHALL FC The First Team currently compete in the Premier Division, the Reserve Team compete in Division 3 and The ‘A’ Team compete in the Norwich and District Saturday league in Division 2. Their highest ever honour came in 2010 when they won the Norfolk Senior Cup at Carrow Road, the last Anglian Combination team to win the competition, along the way they defeated Dereham Town and Norwich United from the Eastern Counties league. They did also reach the Junior Cup Final at Carrow Road in the late 80s going onto lose to Poringland in the final. Since 1998/99 they have played all their Anglian Combination football in the Premier Division or Division One. In 2005/06 they gained promotion from Division One finishing 2nd behind Dersingham Rovers. Since then they have always been in the Premier Division Their best finish in the Premier Division was in 2010/2011 season when they finished a very creditable third in the league, the best position in the club’s history. In 2018/19 they finished in 8th place and last season before it was aborted they were sitting in 10th place but having games in hand on many teams above them a top 6 position was not out of the question.

THE VILLAGE OF MATTISHALL Evidence of human activity in the villages reaches back to the period between 8000 and 1000 BC. The discovery in 1968 of a hoard of 110 silver coins provides a link with the Roman period. However no proof of Roman occupation has been found so far. The four panels of the Mattishall village sign, erected in 1984, depict different periods of history from Roman, the Domesday Survey of 1086, medieval to the mid-twentieth century. The All Saints Church in Mattishall dates from the late fourteenth century, possibly replacing an earlier church on the site. During the reign of Edward VI, cleric Matthew Parker married Margaret Harlestone of Mattishall. He became the first Archbishop of Canterbury to be appointed under Elizabeth I. Local tradition has it that the house behind the butcher's shop in Church Plain was the Harlestone family home. Some of the very old buildings in Mattishall are hidden behind brick and mortar skins and Georgian facades, but others remain to be admired. Of the three nineteenth century mills, the bases of two remain. One has been converted recently into a holiday cottage. The National School (subsequently Mattishall First School and Mattishall Middle School, and since 2005 merged to become simply Mattishall Primary School) was built in 1872. A notable headmistress was Miss Johnson (1884–1919), the daughter of the station master at . Miss Mildred Edwards, a pupil-teacher, was still around when the school celebrated its centenary. It was she who planted the conker, which grew into the very large chestnut tree in the garden of Church Cottage near the corner of the school playing field. The fortunes and well being of the villagers have fluctuated over the centuries. In 1835 the family of Sir William Edward Parry, the polar explorer, occupied South Green House (now Mattishall Hall) for a few months. On half pay from the navy, he was sent to Norfolk as an Assistant Commissioner for the New Poor Law. His sister-in-law wrote to her mother, "...a large population, immense families, and not work for half, and no resident gentleman near to do anything for them... such a disagreeable neighbourhood...". Francesca Catchpole Looking Back Into The Archives Today, I’ve selected not a home programme but since we are playing Mattishall, I’ve picked the Mummery Cup final one against today’s opponents from 2010. Mattishall had already exceeded all expectations by winning the Senior Cup that year, beating Norwich Utd on Penalties. In weather that represented all four seasons a tightly contested affair also saw this game go into penalties after a 2-2 draw. Blofield’s record in shootouts is woeful but, on that day, we converted 8 out of 9 spot kicks to win (& retain) the cup 8-7 on penalties.

Last Saturday saw all eight fixtures take place which resulted in 34 goals being scored. There were 3 home wins, 3 away wins and two draws over the eight games. We start our look at Acle where Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers were the visitors, the home team eventually ran out 4-2 winners in a very good game of football. The Acle goalscorers on the day were Keggan Middleton, Ashley Smith, Luke Thacker and Aaron Bullent who came of the bench to notch. The Dussindale scorers were Robert Howard and Adam Thompson. Caister continued their fine run of results away at Beef Meadow winning 3-0 against Beccles Town. The home team found Caister in fine form and goals from Lee Roots with a brace and George Barnden gave the Lifeboatmen a deserved win. To make matters worse for the home team they had Thomas Harmer dismissed for two bookable offences. Harleston also were pleased to get back to action after a couple of weeks without a match, they travelled to Old Yarmouth Road to take on Blofield United and ran out 2- 0 winners. The scorers on the day for The Magpies were Sam Borrer and newly signed from Dereham Town Ryan Crisp. The Magpies also had ex Lowestoft left back on the bench Adam Smith, who joined during last week. Bottom team Bradenham Wanderers picked up their first point of the season with a hard earned point in a 0-0 draw at home to Long Stratton. Mattishall will have been delighted with their results at home to Mundford winning by 5 goals to 1 at the Playing Field. Mattishall had 5 different scorers on the day, Ricky Bevis, Josh Denny, Lewis Hart, Joshua MaCann and Jorge Pascoal all notched for the Blues with Harry Hutt scoring for Mundford. Second placed UEA made the tough looking trip to Swardeston to take on Norwich CEYMS and in a game full of good football the away team ran out 3-2 winners. Henry Clark, Jake Conway and Lewis Wardale scored for UEA Goals with Tom Baird and Kelvin Haywood getting the goals for CEYMS. Ashley Baxter had a day to forget for the home team after receiving his matching orders during the game. Scole United are also finding some form of late and they will have been pleased to beat Waveney at home by 4 goals to 2. They had Ashley Baxter, James Harrison, Jake McDowell and Ben Norton-Hugman to thank for their goals and Waveney ‘s scorers on the day were Bradley Hough and Connor Swann. That result moved Scole United upto 7th in the table with Waveney dropping to 9th. The last match we need to look at from last Saturday is the one at Thorpe Rec where Thorpe St Andrew’s welcomed the Young Yachtsmen of Wroxham Reserves. The neutral supporters certainly had a fine game to watch with goals a plenty, the final score being 3-3 and a point for both teams. Ryan Fuller scored a brace for Wroxham with Martynas Rope, Harry Shawyer and Dumitru Sarmaniuc scoring for the home team. That point means St Andrews are still one from bottom with Wroxham Reserves in 12th position. Good luck to all teams playing today. The Beavers Half-Time Quiz

Update Guidance for BUFC Committee Members following Government announcement 22nd October Following the further restrictions announced by the Government earlier this week, Steve, Johnny, Jules and I met last night to discuss and to lay down a few more rules surrounding the clubhouse, particularly on match day. - The QR reader has been created and a number of them will be about the Rec and outside the clubhouse. We would encourage people to download the NHS Covid-19 tracker APP and if they can to check in when visiting the club. - People who do not have this App, will need to manually register if they enter the clubhouse. - Wearing of Masks by committee members and any persons entering the clubhouse will be compulsory until they have been served a drink. - Upon entering the clubhouse, please make your way to a table and wait to be served by one of the committee members. - Once you have been served and have paid for your drink, you may then remove your mask. - PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE A MAXIMUM CAPACITY OF 24 allowed in the bar area at any one time. - This means that after any home match, ONLY HOME PLAYERS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS will be allowed to sit in the bar area. - If the weather is dry, we will also look to provide seating outside the clubhouse. - Wearing of masks isn’t compulsory if you are sitting outside but as per the rules for the bar area, please take a seat and wait for one of the committee members to serve you. - The Tea Hut will be open as usual and tea or coffee can be purchased as before. Servers will have to wear a mask. - If the clubhouse is full and there is no seating outside, there is still the potential to serve alcohol from the tea hut, however these drinks will be served in plastic glasses and we’d ask people to spread themselves widely outside the clubhouse area BUT NOT to go on to the grass as this is forbidden.
