Archaeological Desk Based Assessment LAND AT LYNDFORD HALL, LYNFORD NORFOLK ARCHAEOLOGICAL DESK-BASED ASSESSMENT SUMMARY This report presents the results of research carried out by Witham Archaeology considering the archaeological implications of the construction of 50 – 60 holiday cottages within the grounds of Lynford Hall, a Grade II listed building located to the east of Mundford, Norfolk. The report, commissioned by EJW Planning on behalf of their client, AHP Builders Ltd, will form part of a submission for planning permission for the development. The area of the proposed development lies between a formal garden extending from the south end of the hall and the central ornamental lake of the surrounding park. A 1km square area (hereafter known as the Area of Assessment) centred on the proposed development was used to search the Norfolk County Council Historic Environment Record (NCCHER) for Heritage Assets. There are a total of 104 records of Heritage Assets within the Assessment Area held in the NCCHER. Although many of these relate to features associated with the hall its park and gardens, other records relate to evidence of past occupation within the Area of Assessment area ranging in date from the middle Palaeolithic through to the post medieval period. Significant archaeological sites within the Assessment Area include a Bronze Age bowl barrow which is protected as a nationally important Scheduled Monument. Although not a scheduled site, deposits of late Middle Palaeolithic date identified in a quarry located 1km to the north of the site are certainly of national significance. The site of the now deserted Lynford medieval village lies within the Assessment Area as do various landscape features which are likely to represent former ponds, lakes, channels, earthwork bands and boundaries associated with Lynford Hall and its two precursors. 1.0 INTRODUCTION This report presents the results of research carried out by Witham Archaeology considering the archaeological implications of the construction of 50 – 60 holiday cottages on land at Lynford Hall, Lyndford, Norfolk. The information in this document is presented with the proviso that further data may yet emerge. Witham Archaeology cannot, therefore, be held responsible for any loss, delay or damage, material or otherwise, arising out of this report. The document has been prepared in accordance with the Code of Conduct of the Chartered Institute of Archaeologists. 2.0 SITE LOCATION, TOPOGRAPHY & GEOLOGY (see Figs. 1 & 2) The site lies within the Civil Parish of Lynford, approximately 1.75km to the east of Mundford village. The parish lies 28 miles southwest of Norwich and 7.5 miles northwest of Thetford in the administrative district of Breckland. The site of the proposed

  • Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office
Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office This list summarises the Norfolk Record Office’s (NRO’s) holdings of parish (Church of England) registers and of transcripts and other copies of them. Parish Registers The NRO holds registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for most parishes in the Diocese of Norwich (including Suffolk parishes in and near Lowestoft in the deanery of Lothingland) and part of the Diocese of Ely in south-west Norfolk (parishes in the deanery of Fincham and Feltwell). Some Norfolk parish records remain in the churches, especially more recent registers, which may be still in use. In the extreme west of the county, records for parishes in the deanery of Wisbech Lynn Marshland are deposited in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, whilst Welney parish records are at the Cambridgeshire Record Office. The covering dates of registers in the following list do not conceal any gaps of more than ten years; for the populous urban parishes (such as Great Yarmouth) smaller gaps are indicated. Whenever microfiche or microfilm copies are available they must be used in place of the original registers, some of which are unfit for production. A few parish registers have been digitally photographed and the images are available on computers in the NRO's searchroom. The digital images were produced as a result of partnership projects with other groups and organizations, so we are not able to supply copies of whole registers (either as hard copies or on CD or in any other digital format), although in most cases we have permission to provide printout copies of individual entries.

  • Sacred Tieart Cfmrcfi
Sacred tieart Cfmrcfi 1985 1985 is bound to go down as the year of anniversaries for the diocese of East Anglia, as you know I have celebrated the fortieth of my priesthood, and now you are celebrating sixty years of the Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Margaret Mary. Anniversaries make us look back on the years that have gone by, hopefully with much gratitude. Yes, together we give thanks for the sixty years of the presence of your church. Its presence is a sign of the love and forgiveness of God. Cardinal Hume once said to a group of young people that whenever they saw a church, they were to see it as a symbol that God wanted them. He is so right! God wants you and me to be, in the world today, witnesses of his love, bearers of his forgiveness and truth. Whenever you come to the Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Margaret Mary, to celebrate the Sacraments of Christ's love, remember that what you receive you are called to share. May the Church in Dereham continue to blossom and grow in the service of Christ. Yours devotedly, +Alan C. Clark Bishop of East Anglia The first record of Catholics in East Dereham is in 1834, although undoubtedly there would have been Catholics in the area before that year; three were recorded at Gressenhall and five in East Dereham. One of these, a Mrs. Skerritt is recorded in "The Norfolk Diary1, written by Rev. Benjamin Armstrong, as having borrowed a book from him.
