REVIEWS Chen Guidi and Wu Chuntao, Zhongguo nongmin diaocha [Survey of Chinese Peasants] People’s Literature Publication Company: Beijing 2004, 460 pp Publication suspended March 2004 Yang Lian DARK SIDE OF THE CHINESE MOON A growing literature in recent years has documented the disparity between rural and urban living standards in China, and the deteriorating situation of the country’s 900 million peasants. Li Changping’s bestselling Telling the Prime Minister the Truth, He Qinglian’s Modernization’s Pitfall and other pathbreaking works have explored the social costs of China’s headlong econ- omic development. Intellectual journals and the popular press alike have devoted acres of space to the crisis in the countryside. Amid this ferment, Chen Guidi and Wu Chuntao’s Survey of Chinese Peasants stands out for its vivid narratives of peasant life and for the real voices of the toilers that speak from its pages. Not only does it name the names, one after another, of the petty local tyrants whose abuses and brutalities make these agricultural labourers’ lives a living hell. The Survey also raises the underlying political question of how this situation came about. Chen and Wu—they are husband and wife—both come from peasant backgrounds, in Anhui and Hunan Provinces respectively, although they have made their careers as writers in the city. Wu had written warmly of her village childhood in an earlier essay, ‘Cherishing a Faraway Place’, while Chen, a novelist, had written on environmental questions. On 1 October 2000 they set out from Hefei, the provincial capital, some 500 miles south of Beijing, to explore the conditions of peasant life throughout the fifty-plus counties of Anhui, from the floodplains of the River Huai to the Yangtze Valley, travelling by bus or even on foot to reach the remotest villages. -

China today is in the midst of the fastest economic and social-cultural transformation of any nation in history. The Chinese economy is today, by many measurements, the world’s largest. Whether we can sum up conditions in China as “socialism with Chinese characteristics,” “mercantilist capitalism,” “East Asian authoritarian developmentalism” or some other label, China cannot be understood without knowledge of its revolutionary heritage and long-standing technologies of mass mobilization. And the revolutionary heritage of the twentieth century cannot be understood without knowledge of the political, socio-economic, and cultural systems that came under great strain in the nineteenth century. “China” today is itself a direct product of the Qing Empire (1644-1912), which expanded its borders to nearly double the territories claimed by the Ming Empire (1368-1644). This state was falling apart in the nineteenth century, but China was strengthened and reestablished through revolutionary movements (Nationalist as well as Communist) over the course of the twentieth century. In doing so, it seeks to derive insights into the role of intellectuals in China, and what this says about Chinese politics. It argues that, although initially reluctant to enter politics, Wang has become in effect a ‘hidden leader’, exercising far-reaching influence on the nature of Chinese politics, thereby revealing the fundamental tensions in contemporary Chinese politics, shaped by major political debates concerning stability, economic growth, and legitimacy. Understanding the character and aspirations of China’s top leaders and the subtle and complex shifting of alliances and authority that characterizes politics at this highest level has long been the focus of students of Chinese politics. But much less attention is paid to those who advise these leaders, perhaps because of the anonymity of these advisors and the view that they wield limited authority within the hierarchy of the state and the Party. -

It introduces service members to the basic phrases and vocabulary needed for everyday military tasks such as meet & greet (establishing rapport), commands, and questioning. Content is tailored to support deploying units of military police, civil affairs, and engineers. In 6–8 hours of self-paced training, Rapport familiarizes learners with conversational phrases and cultural traditions, as well as the geography and ethnic groups of the region. Learners hear the target language as it is spoken by a native speaker through 75–85 commonly encountered exchanges. Place-Making for the People: Socially Engaged Art in Rural China This
Paper title: Place-Making for the People: Socially engaged art in Rural China This paper examines the work of a number of contemporary Chinese artists and curators who have devoted themselves to small-scale place construction in the battered countryside through artistic and cultural activities. Positioning this movement in the backdrop of the strikingly widening gap between the rural and the urban, I argue that the works of these art professionals not only provide critical reflections and bottom-up alternatives to the dominant social developmental discourse, but also activate and expand the potential of art as agent of social intervention, community building, and cultural change. 1. The Social Turn of Art in Contemporary China Wang Nanming (Fig 1), the vocal Chinese art critic and curator, advocates the significance of socially engaged art, or social practices as he calls it, endeavored by a number of contemporary Chinese artists: “The avant-gardism of contemporary Chinese art lies in social volunteerism, a concept with endless potentials.…The practice and theory of artists as social workers lifts art to a boundless field, in which art could penetrate into every small part of the society.”1 Wang argues that “artist social workers” who employ their art to investigate current Chinese social problems and to initiate local-specific strategies of intervention and real social changes has become an important force of contemporary Chinese art.2 In his writing, there is a strong anticipation in the power and responsibility of art to engage with Chinese social reality. His theoretical inquiry echoes the effort of a growing number of Chinese artists and cultural professionals who have involved with various local communities and society at large in their artistic practices. -

Films are either streamed or on reserve. Course Description and Requirements This course is a research seminar. Enrollment is by permission of the instructor. Some familiarity with modern Chinese history is expected. For general narrative or reference, see Jonathan Spence, The Search for Modern China (1999, 2nd edition) or R. Keith Schoppa, Revolution and its Past: Identities and Change in Modern Chinese History (2006, 2nd edition). Students will develop skills in reading, analysis, interpretation, and basic research methods, resulting in independent research projects. The class will meet twice per week for 80 minutes. Class sessions will be devoted to 1) discussion of assigned readings, responses, and critiques and 2) presentation and assessment of various research exercises, in which everyone will be engaged on a regular basis. In addition, 3) each student will design and execute an independent research project in consultation with the professor and make an oral presentation to the class. -
