The first, in March 1872, was to England and its purpose was to obtain for Burma recognition as a fully sovereign state, notwithstanding the fact that Lower Burma was already in British hands. Failing to obtain that recognition from England, Kinwun Mingyi crossed over to France and entered into a commercial treaty with the Republic, thus demonstrating the sovereign treaty-making power of the Kingdom of Burma. But on return to Mandalay in May 1873, Kinwun Mingyi found the Burmese court unenthusiastic over the treaty, and when a French embassy arrived some months later to exchange ratification, the King suggested amendments and additions.

    Pa Auk Tawya Forest Monastery Pa Auk Tawya (Forest Monastery) is situated near the Pa Auk Village. The main road from which to enter the forest is at the 9th Mile Mawlamyine-Mudon Highway. The name 'Pa Auk Tawya' is also used by other forest monasteries in the area where their alms-round resort is also the Pa Auk Village. However in the following, 'Pa Auk Tawya' refers only to the Forest Monastery consisting of three monasteries that come under the guidance of the Venerable Sayadaw Bhaddanta Acinna which are: (1) Thit-thee Kyaung or (also known as) Zin-gyan Kyaung or Lower Monastery; (2) Kywe-da-nyin Kyaung or Middle Monastery; (3) Cittala-pabbata Vihara or Wah Kyaung or Upper Monastery. The Lineage of Abbots Thit-thee Sayadaw The founder abbot of Thit-thee Kyaung and Kywe-da-nyin Kyaung of Pa Auk Tawya Forest Monastery was Venerable Sayadaw Ashin Khemavanta who was well known as Thit-thee Sayadaw.     Elizabeth Moore Monasteries of Mandalay SPAFA Journal Vol. 6 No. 3 n a period of rapid changes, the restoration and reconstruction of aspects of the past require a I complementary programme which preserves structures in their antique state. Admittedly, satisfying the differing needs of the living monastic communities, researchers and archaeologists, and tourism and development, is not a simple task, but an important one to undertake, so that part of the cultural patrimony of Myanmar is preserved for future generations. The monasteries of Mandalay exemplify the changing architectural traditions of the Yatanabon and early colonial period.1 Each of the types described here can be seen in other parts of Myanmar but there is a natural concentration within the last Konbaung capital. The following is a survey of variations in architecture and patronage, some individual kyaung (Buddhist monasteries) and other compounds or taik. The monasteries have been classified into "classic" examples, private apartments converted into monasteries, and those incorporating Western and other foreign design features. It is the frame of the building, described as the basic post and lintel skeleton, which is considered rather than the decorative carvings that were added later. The dimensions of the buildings used by by the master carpenter to calculate the overall and particular size of the monastery parts were made using measures based on parts of the body, specifically that of the donor.2 This was also the case for monasteries built of brick, where decoration such as stucco was also added to a structure which in many respects followed the wooden prototypes. This was not so much the case for the brick monasteries of Pagan which followed Indian models.3 In undertaking this survey of monasteries, another aim is to call attention to the question of monastic preservation in Myanmar.

The research paper present; why the British occupied Banmaw, what were causes to occupy Banmaw, how the British prepared to occupy Banmaw, and the conditions of Banmaw before and after the British annexation. Based on contemporary records, the paper was conducted. I believe that my research work will be a partial significant value for colonial period of Myanmar. Key words: British, annexation Introduction The total area of Banmaw township is 759.01 miles and locates on the left bank of (Irrawaddy) Ayeyarwaddy River. It is traditionally says that the word “Ban Maw” is belong from the Shan language “Man Maw”. The town lies about twelve miles distant in a straight line from the foot of the Kachin hills. During the reign of Myanmar Kings, the British had long been interested in the northern Myanmar, especially Banmaw which located at the east bank of Ayeyarwaddy. Therefore, Banmaw is the gate of Upper Myanmar and the port for trading, existed for centuries with Yunan Province of China. Before the British annexation of the whole Myanmar in 1885, they attempted to develop and control some parts of the Southern Silk road to reach Southern China, Banmaw and Myitkyina were the same important trading centres within Myanmar boundaries. A Study on the British Annexation of (Bhamo) Banmaw (1885-87) Banmaw Township locates between 23 54 and 24 42 N and between 96 53 and 93 24 E.
