Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church February 2020 The Bethlehem Volume 8, Issue 6 Let each his lesson learn with care, and all the household well shall fare. Star As we continue our walk through the Table of Duties of Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, we stay in the realm of the household to see the duties of Parents and Children. Last month we looked at the unique offices and relationship of husband and wife. One of the purposes of mar- riage is the procreation of life as God wills it. Children are a gift from God and both children and parents are called to live in love for on another. In particular parents are given this instruction: Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 The passage cited for parents in the Table of Duties explicitly references fathers. This is not to exclude mothers, but it does highlight the spiritual responsibility of fathers as head of the house- hold. What is that responsibility? We see it as two-fold. First, they are not to exasperate, or pro- voke their children to wrath. What does this mean? It has everything to do with how we use the Law. Parents are not to oppressively use the Law with the result that children become embittered against both their parents and the Law of God. As sinful as children may be, they should never be told that they must earn God or their parent’s love or that they are hated by their parents for their failing.

We pray God’s blessings on your worship and time spent among us at Hope Lutheran Church! We ask you to please take the time to fill in the Friendship pad (be sure to give us your name and address) and feel free to indicate any prayer concerns on the reverse side of the pad. We are a “Family-Friendly Church” and encourage the participation of children in our worship. However, we realize there are times when children can become disruptive to other worshipers, and for that reason there is a cry room located in the back of the church for your use. Children’s worship bags are available in the narthex for your use during the service (see an usher or elder). Please return the bag following the service to the “Worship Bag Tree.” We encourage you to join us for any and all activities at Hope in the week ahead! IMPORTANT NOTES: for the sanctity of our worship and the benefit of those around you, please refrain from excessive talking in the narthex and sanctuary, and turn off all cell phones, pagers, etc.

Carroll: A Survey of Recent Mariology A SURVEY OF RECENT MARIOLOGY From the scattered riches of writings about our Lady from i979, the single theme strong enough to receive top billing is the aspect of Marian pilgrimage. As we heard from Bishop Vaughan earlier in this convention, Pope John Paul II's travels took him to capital Marian shrines in Poland, Ireland and Mex ico, among other places. It was the lOOth anniversary of the appearance of our Lady at Knock in County Mayo, Ireland, and the centenary also of the death of St. Bernadette of Lourdes. The international ecumenical conference held in England late September and early October began at London, continued at Oxford, but ended at the pre-Reformation shrine of Our Lady of Caversham, with Father Alfred Boeddeker, O.F.M., of San Francisco, as the final speaker.
