Summer Worship Schedule Bible Studies Summer Office Hours Take The Jewels Summer 2019 A publication of Crown of Life Lutheran Church, Sun City West, AZ Summer Worship Boring Summer? by Pastor Phill, Sr. Pastor Schedule Although I couldn’t prove it by this morning’s mid-60s temperature, it really is the summer season here at Crown of Life – and where you are as well. Our office has gone to summer hours; church attendance is down 30%, so far, compared to January – on the Saturday – 4 PM way to a 50% drop by August; 100 degree days are not far off. And yet, the life of the Sunday – 9 AM church goes on, season by season. Always has. Always will. And lest you think nothing ever happens in Lutheran history in the summer, take a look at this list of summer events: 18 May, 1528 - Martin Luther began the first of three sermon series on the catechism – Bible Studies which became the basis for the Small and Large Catechisms he would write the next year. Sunday Bible Class – 10:15 AM 21 May, 1559 – the first Lutherans were burned at the stake for heresy in Spain. Women’s Bible Study 4 June, 1743 – the first Bible printed in America Monday 9:30 AM 9 June, 1917 – three independent Norwegian synods combined to form the Norwegian Lutheran Church in America – that might seem obscure to many – but important to Pastor Ron’s Bible Class some of our Midwestern friends! Wednesday 9:30 AM 13 June, 1525 – Martin Luther, former monk, married Katherina von Bora, former num. (June & July) 19 June, 325 – The first Council of Nicaea began, to iron out doctrinal issues. Remember Men’s Bible Study - the Nicene Creed? Pastor Ray Mirly st rd 23 June, 1530 – Reformation leaders signed the Augsburg Confession, an explanation of 1 & 3 Friday – 9:00 AM our beliefs and positions as Lutheran Christians. Pastor Vern’s Bible Class 8 July, 1942 – The Lutheran Womens’ Missionary League was organized. Friday 10:30 AM continued on back Summer Office Take God Along as Your Co-Pilot Hours by Carol Steficek, Parish Nurse For our members who have already reached their summer destinations, and to all of you who remain here who will be taking short vacations: Be sure to take God along Monday – Thursday with you! Remember: Pray without ceasing, read your Bible daily, consult God on all 7:30 AM – 2:00 PM your decisions, remember He wants you to stay healthy (eat right, drink enough Friday water, exercise), take your medications as prescribed, keep your First Aid Kit handy, stay OFF of ladders, stay in touch with family and friends, find a church to attend 7:30 AM -- Noon regularly, drive safely on the roads wherever you are. Remember, God never takes a vacation from you! Have a great summer. I'll look forward to seeing everyone in the fall! Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church February 2020 The Bethlehem Volume 8, Issue 6 Let each his lesson learn with care, and all the household well shall fare. Star As we continue our walk through the Table of Duties of Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, we stay in the realm of the household to see the duties of Parents and Children. Last month we looked at the unique offices and relationship of husband and wife. One of the purposes of mar- riage is the procreation of life as God wills it. Children are a gift from God and both children and parents are called to live in love for on another. In particular parents are given this instruction: Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 The passage cited for parents in the Table of Duties explicitly references fathers. This is not to exclude mothers, but it does highlight the spiritual responsibility of fathers as head of the house- hold. What is that responsibility? We see it as two-fold. First, they are not to exasperate, or pro- voke their children to wrath. What does this mean? It has everything to do with how we use the Law. Parents are not to oppressively use the Law with the result that children become embittered against both their parents and the Law of God. As sinful as children may be, they should never be told that they must earn God or their parent’s love or that they are hated by their parents for their failing.

Carroll: A Survey of Recent Mariology A SURVEY OF RECENT MARIOLOGY From the scattered riches of writings about our Lady from i979, the single theme strong enough to receive top billing is the aspect of Marian pilgrimage. As we heard from Bishop Vaughan earlier in this convention, Pope John Paul II's travels took him to capital Marian shrines in Poland, Ireland and Mex ico, among other places. It was the lOOth anniversary of the appearance of our Lady at Knock in County Mayo, Ireland, and the centenary also of the death of St. Bernadette of Lourdes. The international ecumenical conference held in England late September and early October began at London, continued at Oxford, but ended at the pre-Reformation shrine of Our Lady of Caversham, with Father Alfred Boeddeker, O.F.M., of San Francisco, as the final speaker.
