St John Lutheran Church and School Faith Development Guide (Based on the Luther’S Small Catechism) St John Lutheran Church and School Faith Development Guide (Based on the Luther’s Small Catechism) "AS THE HEAD OF THE FAMILY SHOULD TEACH THEM IN A SIMPLE WAY TO HIS HOUSEHOLD" Martin Luther Prepared by: Pastor John Stransky & Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator Benjamin D. Seidler Has been and will be Reviewed and Approved by St. John Boards: Elders/ Christian Education and Day School Board 1 Printed on January 7, 2019 2 Why Is Children’s Ministry So Important? 1) God instructs parents to teach their children about Him (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and Psalm 78:1-8). 2) Jesus welcomes and blesses children in the face of the disciples’ rebuke (Mark 10:13-16). 3) Jesus reveals mysteries to children that are hidden from the wise (Matthew 11:25). 4) Jesus challenges adults to change and humbly reflect childlike hearts (Matthew 18:2-6). 5) Jesus presents Himself to those who welcome children. Those who cause children to sin are punished (Matthew 18:5-6). 6) Most people enter a relationship with Jesus as children (George Barna). 7) Parents can be spiritually reached through their children. 8) Parents seek healthy, safe, enriching activities that they and their children can enjoy. Churches can create opportunities for this as well as add the spiritual component. 9) Churches can mentor parents who may not know how to spiritually guide their children. 10) Churches can offer a sacred space of respite for weary and hurting families. 11) Children’s Ministry provides opportunities for parents and children to develop friendships and connect with their peers. 12) Children’s Ministry allows volunteers to bond with one another and make a difference in the lives of other people. The Third Commandment Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it. The Fourth Commandment Honor your father and your mother. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them. The Fifth Commandment You shall not murder. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need. The Sixth Commandment You shall not commit adultery. What does this mean? Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church February 2020 The Bethlehem Volume 8, Issue 6 Let each his lesson learn with care, and all the household well shall fare. Star As we continue our walk through the Table of Duties of Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, we stay in the realm of the household to see the duties of Parents and Children. Last month we looked at the unique offices and relationship of husband and wife. One of the purposes of mar- riage is the procreation of life as God wills it. Children are a gift from God and both children and parents are called to live in love for on another. In particular parents are given this instruction: Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 The passage cited for parents in the Table of Duties explicitly references fathers. This is not to exclude mothers, but it does highlight the spiritual responsibility of fathers as head of the house- hold. What is that responsibility? We see it as two-fold. First, they are not to exasperate, or pro- voke their children to wrath. What does this mean? It has everything to do with how we use the Law. Parents are not to oppressively use the Law with the result that children become embittered against both their parents and the Law of God. As sinful as children may be, they should never be told that they must earn God or their parent’s love or that they are hated by their parents for their failing.

Carroll: A Survey of Recent Mariology A SURVEY OF RECENT MARIOLOGY From the scattered riches of writings about our Lady from i979, the single theme strong enough to receive top billing is the aspect of Marian pilgrimage. As we heard from Bishop Vaughan earlier in this convention, Pope John Paul II's travels took him to capital Marian shrines in Poland, Ireland and Mex ico, among other places. It was the lOOth anniversary of the appearance of our Lady at Knock in County Mayo, Ireland, and the centenary also of the death of St. Bernadette of Lourdes. The international ecumenical conference held in England late September and early October began at London, continued at Oxford, but ended at the pre-Reformation shrine of Our Lady of Caversham, with Father Alfred Boeddeker, O.F.M., of San Francisco, as the final speaker.
