Thank you. iii ABSTRACT This thesis explores volunteering at three heritage railways in Gwynedd, North Wales, during the period of 2016-2017. The decision to focus on heritage railways in Wales was taken as it offers an insight into a specific type of volunteering, in a unique setting which is often overlooked in the literature. Unlike many other forms of volunteering, railway participation is generally intense, seasonal, and highly gendered, which challenges many previously held perceptions. The data was collected by way of structured interviews and participant observations with volunteers and members of management at each of the three railways. This methodology was utilised due to the nature of the organisations themselves, the way in which the volunteers generally lived considerable distances away from the railways, engaged on an intensive basis, and worked long hours. Due to these challenges, interviewing the volunteers in a more structured way, frequently whilst they were working and on their individual tasks, allowed for rich data to be collected. Through conducting an analysis of interview data and field notes (both analysed through the use of NVIVO), this research seeks to understand the personal stories, histories, and motives of those who participate. Specifically, this research examines how and why individuals came to be involved with the railways. The findings of this thesis have shown that for the vast majority of the participants, being a volunteer on the railways was a serious leisure based activity, which often went beyond the traditionally held views of volunteering being an ad hoc activity which is engaged upon by the middle classes. Volunteers generally considered their engagement to be a form of ‘serious leisure’ as a result of their significant commitment. The paricipants often referred to iv the six elements of serious leisure ascribed by Stebbins (2006), these being 1) need to persevere at the activity, 2) availability of a leisure career, 3) need to put in effort to gain skill and knowledge, 4) realization of various special benefits, 5) unique ethos and social world, and 6) an attractive personal and social identity. Participants also reflected wider demographics within the industrial heritage industry and following the data analysis, retirement, belonging, identity, community (the railway community), the influence of family, tradition, demographics emerged as key themes. Furthermore, the research found that particularly post retirement, volunteering provides many benefits including improving mental health, making new friends, feeling useful after ceasing employment, and being able to pursue a lifelong interest. Family was a significant aspect identified, with many indicating a connection either through previous membership, or by visiting as children with their family. Therefore, illustrating that railway volunteering can be considered a form of inheritance which is passed down through generations, particularly amongst the males. The initial part of this thesis will focus primarily upon participant demographics, connections to family histories, and the motives behind individual engagement. The second part of the study examines the ‘serious’ nature of railway volunteering, including the dedication and commitment involved, both in terms of time and financial resources, along with how the volunteers develop a sense of belonging and community in this unique form of volunteering. For the purposes of this study, the term community will be used to defined both the local and volunteer communities. The final section of the research will further explore how the participants attempted to differentiate themselves from 'other' groups of volunteers, and how they responded to the stereotypical views held by the general public and perpetuated by the media, thereby helping them to shape their identities. v Overall, this thesis is positioned as a sociological inquiry, theoretically informed by the serious leisure perspective of Robert Stebbins and the field of heritage volunteering. Turn left and carry on along fence until gate in corner, do not go through gate but follow track on right back across field marked with reflector posts. Follow towards road. 50 yards before road, turn left onto stony track going downhill. At fork take right-hand fork, keep on track until it becomes a tarmac lane near bottom of hill.

Approaching the station buildings along the drive, the picnic area can be seen to the right, adjacent to the River Ouse, where lunch can be taken. The river is little more than a stream today but it was once navigable from the sea at Newhaven to just short of Balcombe Viaduct – on the London to Brighton main line between Haywards Heath and Balcombe. The 11 million bricks used to construct the viaduct were transported up river from Lewes by barge. 2. The station is built in the Queen Anne country architectural style, a style used at all stations on the line and is painted in the colours of the line's initial operators, the London Brighton and South Coast Railway. The year in which the line opened – 1892 -can be found in the decorative plasterwork on the front of the station building. Passengers enter the station via the booking hall and purchase their old fashioned Edmondson cardboard tickets from the booking office. The station was originally lit by oil lamps but is now lit by a mix of evocative gas lighting and more modern electric lights. It sits astride the Greenwich Meridian, the exact (Photo: Bluebell Archives) location being marked by a plaque at the north end of platform 1. 3. The Railway houses and maintains its fleet of mainly steam locomotives at the station - currently it has some thirty engines in stock although only ten or so are in service at any given time – they need a boiler inspection and a new certificate every ten years.

There are enchanting views to the river from every room, and it provides a picturesque backdrop to meals in the conservatory or on the patio. The surroundings tempt summer al fresco dining, but the kitchen diner can easily seat eight people and is equipped for the keen cook. The cottage has a calm and pleasing atmosphere. It encourages you to settle in the lounge to read and relax, and the multi fuel stove creates a warming glow on a chilly winters’ day.

    Level crossing accident at Penrhyn, Ffestiniog Railway, 6 January 2019 Important safety messages • This accident serves as a reminder of why it is important to follow railway rules and operating instructions. Many rules have developed from the experience of past accidents and incidents. The reason why a rule exists is not always obvious, and may have been forgotten as time passes, but the importance of complying with it does not diminish. • The consequences of a train running onto a level crossing into the path of a road vehicle can be fatal; ensuring trains stop at a ‘Stop’ board placed at a safe distance from a level crossing open to road traffic is a sensible and realistic precaution against inadvertent overruns. • It is also important that organisations have measures in place to assure themselves that rules and instructions are being followed, rather than allowing unsafe ‘custom and practice’ to develop. Summary of the accident On Sunday 6 January 2019 at around 16:30 hrs, an engineering train returning from Tan y Bwlch to Minffordd did not stop as it approached the level crossing at Penrhyn. The gates were closed across the railway, and the train struck the upper gate and pushed through it, coming to a stand part way across the crossing, fouling both carriageways of the road, the A4085. There were no injuries, and minor damage was caused to the crossing gates on the Tan y Bwlch side of the crossing. On applying the locomotive brakes with the intention of stopping short of the gate, the driver realised that the locomotive wheels had locked and that the train was continuing to move down the 1 in 80 gradient.

Snowdonia was designated a National Park because of its natural beauty. The Park Authority is responsible for safeguarding and promoting enjoyment and understanding of the Park‟s special qualities. Today, the Park is under increasing pressure. Every year, because of its renown, millions of people come to enjoy Snowdonia‟s coast, hills, rivers, lakes, wildlife and its special cultural heritage. Gwynn Jones) SIDELINES 143 FEBRUARY 2016 WOLVERHAMPTON LOW LEVEL STATION COMES BACK TO LIFE FOR HRA AWARDS NIGHT. The Grand Station banqueting centre, once the GWR’s most northerly broad gauge station, came back to life as a busy passenger station when it hosted the Heritage Railway Association 2015 Awards Night. The HRA Awards recognise a wide range of achievements and distinctions across the entire heritage railway industry, and the awards acknowledge individuals and institutions as well as railways. The February 6th event saw the presentation of awards in eight categories. The National Railway Museum and York Theatre Royal won the Morton’s Media (Heritage Railways) Interpretation Award, for an innovative collaboration that joined theatre with live heritage steam, when the Museum acted as a temporary home for the theatre company. The Railway Magazine Annual Award for Services to Railway Preservation was won by David Woodhouse, MBE, in recognition of his remarkable 60-year heritage railways career, which began as a volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway, and took him to senior roles across the heritage railways and tourism industry. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway won the Morton’s Media (Rail Express) Modern Traction Award, for their diesel locomotive operation, which included 160 days working for their Crompton Class 25. There were two winners of the Steam Railway Magazine Award. The Great Little Trains of North Wales was the name used by the judges to describe the Bala Lake Railway, Corris Railway, Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway, Talyllyn Railway, Vale of Rheidol Railway and the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway.
