A NEW NORMAL 3

LOGLINE After a traumatic brain injury, a career-focused man struggles to hold onto his self-worth, only to discover the injury and his decision to use medical cannabis to treat it, may be what saves him and his family. 4 DIRECTOR STATEMENT According to the Centers for Disease Control, 2.8 million Americans were diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in 2013. That’s the population of Metro and more than double the number of new cancer cases for the top-10 cancers combined.

The effects can be long term and devastating. And because people fear what they can’t see, families not only have to deal with the after effects of the injury, but also the associated stigma.

This is our story. ‘Remembering Us’ is an autobiographical film written and directed by husband-wife-team Scott Takeda (the patient) and Lori Kay Allred (the caregiver).

Our goal is to give a first-hand account of what it’s like to live with a traumatic brain injury and the shame of having one. 5 THE STORY (SYNOPSIS) Kate and Steve Novak struggle to find their “new normal” after Steve suffers a traumatic brain injury. Can their marriage survive their new positions as helpless patient and caregiver?

On the verge of losing everything, the stigma of Steve’s injury is compounded by the controversy surrounding the chosen treatment – medical marijuana (MMJ). Faced with a no-win situation, Steve chooses to risk his job and treat his injury. But will his family be there in the end?

In addition to MMJ, part of the recovery requires time. Viewers will see the Novak Family story unfold over 12 months, from injury to aftermath to crisis to solution, and finally “a new normal.” 6 THE SETTING

The film takes place in Denver, Colorado. This “every day” location allowed us to set the stage for our film’s characters to confront an injury that is far too common. Our goal: to deliver the message “this can happen to you.”

To further give the film a realistic feel, we’ve shot our images in a documentary style.

The location is also home to most of the filmmakers, cast and crew. This has allowed us to cut costs. 7

MEDICAL MARIJUANA

We will be exploring medical marijuana (MMJ) in our story because it played a key part in Scott’s recovery.

In real life, he struggled with the idea of using MMJ because he was raised in the era of Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” campaign.

Remembering Us will retell that journey from doubter to believer as part of Steve Novak’s character arc. 8 THE CAST 9
