Official Handbook 2008 Official Handbook 2008 - 2010 TASWAFL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The Tasmanian Women’s Football league is managed by the TASWAFL Management Committee. The TASWAFL Management Committee comprises 4 members who have decision making power over the league. These members are; Barry Gaby AFL Regional Manager North West Tasmania Shaun Young AFL Regional Manager Northern Tasmania Wayne Povey AFL Regional Manager Southern Tasmania Luci-Anne Ottaway Executive Office TASWAFL TASWAFL RULES & REGULATIONS The Tasmanian Women’s Football League (TASWAFL) is governed by a set of Rules and Regulations that have been drafted, based upon the Rules and Regulations of the Tasmanian State League (TSL). They are drafted with a view that all clubs should recognize and accept the following basic premises: • A player cannot play for a TASWAFL Club unless she is registered. • The TASWAFL Management Committee is the governing body of the Tasmanian Women’s Footy League. • The TASWAFL Management Committee will be the arbitrator in any dispute concerning the rights of a particular club or a particular player. • In the event that the dispute is unable to be resolved, the party lodging the dispute may request for the matter to be placed before the TSL Management Committee. The TSL Management Committee comprising of the General Manager and Regional Managers will have final say. • All players must indicate their willingness to abide by the TASWAFL competition rules and regulations by signing the competition registration form and the club contract form. • The copy of the TASWAFL Rules & Regulations that is provided on the TASWAFL Website at www.sportingpulse.com.au will be deemed to be the current rules. The Rules and Regulations are not intended to be a legal document. They are framed with the intention of all TASWAFL Clubs accepting them as guidelines in the belief that the TASWAFL Management Committee and Club personnel will work in a spirit of co-operation in the best interests of the TASWAFL as a competition, all Clubs making up the competition and the players themselves. Through newspaper articles, and word of mouth Toni was able to form a team in Launceston and Vanessa was able to form a team in Hobart. In Hobart, the women’s team was affiliated with the Clarence Football Club and in Launceston the women’s team was affiliated with the Launceston Football Club. The first games between the two sides were promoted as North vs South continuing the traditional Australian Football rivalry within the State. Both teams developed their skills through weekly training sessions and on 30 June 2007 the first game of women’s footy was played in Tasmania at the half time break to the Tasmanian Devils game at Bellerive oval. A second game consisting of 4 x 15 minute quarters was played in Launceston in July 07 and another curtain raiser game to the Tasmanian Devils was scheduled for August 07. This game was unfortunately cancelled due to the wet conditions. In 2008, Launceston and Clarence played a 6 game roster, which was drawn up by representatives from the two teams at the beginning of the season. The result of the 6 games was the first Premiership awarded to Clarence. Through the encouragement and support of the Launceston girls, by the end of 2007, a women’s team was emerging at the East Devonport FC. By 2008, although not part of the 6 game rosters, the newly formed East Devonport Women’s team played three scratch mates against Launceston and Clarence. In 2009 the Tasmanian Women’s league developed considerably with the introduction of a 3rd team in East Devonport. The roster was formalised and expanded to a 12 game fixture, with a Grand Final for the top 2 teams. Official umpires were used at most games. The Footy Web system and a player report process was introduced, and the league was given an official logo. Interest in women’s footy grew significantly throughout 2009, and by the end of the year there were a number of new teams forming across the state, including Spreyton, Yeoman, St Helens, North Hobart, and Hobart. Coincidentally, I joined AFL Tasmania as a Director at virtually the same time Andrew became Chief Executive and during my seven years as Chairman of AFL Tasmania our team has worked very closely with Andrew, Gillon McLachlan and other members of the AFL executive management team. The facts speak for themselves; Andrew Demetriou has been an outstanding national leader of our game and in my opinion he has also provided exceptional support and advice to Tasmanian football through AFL Tasmania. The first time I met with Andrew he was very clear about the fact that the AFL must prioritise its development activities in Queensland and New South Wales. The growth of the game in these two northern states will ultimately be to the benefit of a traditional football state such as Tasmania.

A J Donnelly senior, a well-known Burnie identity, took an active interest in sporting activities, community affairs and the history of the North West Coast of Tasmania. His History of the Burnie Athletic Club: 75th birthday souvenir was published in 1962. Like his father, a linotype operator with The Advocate newspaper, young Jack spent his working career with newspapers. For 35 years he worked successively as a senior sports reporter, sub- editor and by 1966 sporting editor with The Examiner in Launceston. His coverage of sporting events included the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, numerous intrastate and interstate football matches (many under the by-line 'Half-Back'), Tours of the North cycling events, Kings Cup rowing contests and other sporting activities. Jack's encyclopaedic knowledge of football, particularly in Tasmania, reflected his great love for the game. In his youth, he played with Burnie, Cooee, APPM, and Launceston, and his Football Guide was published in 1947.

  • Seagulls on the Wing
PART II Seagulls on the wing W. T. (Bill) WILLIAMS 1945-66 BRIAN LEWIS 1967-97 FOREWORD IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES an effort has been made to collate the records of the Sandy Bay Football Club from its inception, and renew acquaintances with all the great players who have worn the Club’s Blue and White Guernsey. Months of research have resulted in the compilation of this comprehensive record, and if perchance some name or names or facts have been omitted the writers offers their apologies. During the years of the Second World War and particularly 1942-43 seeds were sown for the introduction of district football in Hobart and sub- urbs. Many were sceptical of the success, but it was obvious that now was the time to implement the scheme if district football was to succeed. The big barrier was the breaking of old club ties, but with the suspension of League football during the war years and the retirement of most of the pre- war champions the powers that be decided in favour of the new scheme. In 1945 we saw four district Clubs provide the football namely Sandy Bay, North Hobart, New Town and Hobart. In 1947 Clarence and New Norfolk were admitted to the competition. The teams remained unchanged until 1986 when East and North Launceston were admitted. In 1987 the Burnie Hawks and the Devonport Blues were also admitted to form a Statewide League. The number of teams remained the same until the 1994 season when Launceston was admitted, thus creating a bye. No further change occurred until 1997 when all teams handed in their licenses and unfortu- nately the rest is history.

It seems like only yesterday that we conducted our Tasmanian Team of the Century dinner in 2004, followed by our inaugural Hall of Fame induction dinner in 2005. This is just another example of how quickly a decade passes by when you work in an industry as dynamic as Australian Football. Over this decade 277 individuals have entered our Hall of Fame ‘club’ as inductees. We have elevated 40 of these men to Legend status and further elevated just 14 to become Icons of Tasmanian Football. To be one of just 14 Icons to have been identified in over 149 years of the game being played in Tasmania is very special indeed.

PUBLIC THE STANDING COMMITTEE OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTS MET IN COMMITTEE ROOM 2, PARLIAMENT HOUSE, HOBART, ON MONDAY 21 OCTOBER 2013. FOOTBALL INQUIRY Mr MICHAEL HOLMES WAS CALLED, MADE THE STATUTORY DECLARATION AND WAS EXAMINED. CHAIR (Mr Dean) - Welcome. Before we commence there are a couple of things I need to say. This is a public hearing, it is being recorded on Hansard, and in this environment you have parliamentary privilege but outside here you have no parliamentary privilege so anything you say out there is from you. If we get to any stage during your evidence that you would like it to be taken in camera then please make that known to the committee and we will make a determination on where we should go with that if it should reach that stage. You have seen the terms of reference which are reasonably clear albeit there is a catch- all one at the end but it is fairly clear and it relates to the funding the state government provides to AFL Tasmania and how that is expended throughout the state and how the clubs benefits from it and what they are getting out of it, et cetera. You have made a submission, Michael, and we have read that so I will leave it open to you and if there are expansions you want to make or emphasises you want to place or any additional information you might have I will leave that to you at this stage and then we will ask questions. We have Kim Booth - Mr BOOTH - Hello, Michael.

AFL Tasmania devotes most of each year to focusing on the future; considering initiatives to grow our game for our community and for the benefit of the next generation of players, coaches, umpires, support staff, administrators and fans. While grand final day is always a special event for the participating clubs and their respective competitions, for AFL Tasmania our Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame is especially dear to our hearts because it is the only time during the year whereby we can pause for a brief moment and celebrate the past. In addition, we cherish the uniqueness of our Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame, which remains the only football event in the nation that enshrines great contributions from individuals, clubs, teams and games on a truly whole of state basis. We also recognise the special and distinctive elements of our great game in Tasmania such as the gravel oval in Queenstown and the King Island Football Association, to mention just two.

PUBLIC THE PARLIAMENTARY JOINT STANDING COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC ACCOUNTS MET AT AURORA STADIUM, LAUNCESTON, ON WEDNESDAY 23 OCTOBER 2013 INQUIRY INTO GOVERNMENT FUNDING OF AUSTRALIAN RULES COMMUNITY FOOTBALL IN TASMANIA Mr GRAEME WILKINSON WAS CALLED, MADE THE STATUTORY DECLARATION AND WAS EXAMINED CHAIR - Graeme, this is a public hearing. It is recorded and becomes part of the Hansard public record. While you are in here, you have parliamentary privilege. It applies to any of the evidence and information you provide to this committee. Once you walk out of this environment, parliamentary privilege does not apply. If at any stage you feel that the evidence you give is evidence you would like to give in camera, all you have to do is ask and the committee will consider that. Mr WILKINSON - My reason for coming today has been my longstanding concern with what is occurring with football. It is allied to concerns of our society because I believe that whilst football is an important matter and what we are talking about primarily is football and the funding that has been given to a governing body, I am interested to suggest that we look a little further out of the boundaries of football and sport generally, as to what can be done with the funding rather than it being given to a body that is just for the elite part of the sport. I believe we have a fantastic opportunity here and I congratulate you gentlemen and the parliamentary people responsible for putting this inquiry into place because I believe we can utilise the funding far better than how it is being given and administered in its present form.

  • Active After-School Communities Report
Active After-school Communities program and Australian Football League MAY 2011 INTRODUCTION The Active After-school Communities (AASC) program has now been running for over six years. During that time the program has liaised with state and national sporting organisations to help local clubs increase their membership base by exposing primary school aged children to their sport. Two years ago the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) started to prepare specific National Sporting Organisation (NSO) Reports to detail each sport’s involvement in the AASC program. These reports combine a statistical analysis as well as a qualitative review of the information, some examples of best practice case studies and any media articles that may have been generated. The intent of these reports is for NSOs to utilise the information at a national, state and regional level to help develop their sport. I would also encourage NSOs to use the report as a basis for the sport development officers and the AASC’s Regional Coordinators to collaborate and plan deliberate strategies for upcoming terms to promote the transition of children, families and new coaches from the AASC program into respective feeder clubs. Some transition strategies that have proved successful for many sports are as follows: Coordinating a ‘Come ‘n Try Gala Day’ at the end of a term. Delivering a clinic at selected sites to promote membership to a designated feeder club or participation in a modified junior sport program. Coordinating a cluster of schools/Outside School Hours Care Services (OSHCS) to attend the local club and organise a registration or promotional day.
