ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GREENWICH ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016

Dear Friends, The Junior League of Greenwich has been making a significant impact on our community for almost 60 years by fulfilling its mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its projects and programs are addressing real needs in the community. The 2015/2016 year was an exciting time for the Junior League of Greenwich as it continued to expand its reach and impact through its community work. Some of the project highlights include: our self- empowerment programs, PositivelyMe! and Positively More, which target 3rd and 6th grade girls respectively, and reach over 300 local girls each year; the inception of our Young Women’s Breast Cancer Support Group; our transition of the Greenwich Youth Film Festival to the Garden Education Group; our many New Member projects including a renovation of the teen room at the Boys and Girls Club, Baby Bundles and New Mommy Bundles to benefit Neighbor to Neighbor, renovation projects at Kids in Crisis, a Viva Las Vegas event at Riverhouse Adult “Our League has made a Day Care; and lastly, Done in a Day, which held various events significant and meaningful around town including but not limited to: a food drive to benefit impact on Greenwich lives. We should each be very proud Neighbor to Neighbor, floral arranging for seniors at Community of the work that has been done Centers Inc., a community lecture on concussion injuries, and we continue to do.” a women’s self defense course, Police Day in downtown Lin Lavery Greenwich, the 10th Anniversary of our Casino Day at Nathanial Past president and former Witherell and a backpack program for Greenwich Public Selectman for the Town of Greenwich Schools. It was also an honor to present the Community Service Awards and Community Grants to deserving recipients. Additionally, this was a significant year for the Greenwich Pool in Byram Park project and the public-private partnership between the Junior League of Greenwich and the Town of Greenwich. With construction funds released by the Board of Estimate and Taxation, construction of the new community pool began and is expected to be completed in 2018. The Junior League’s Greenwich Pool in Byram Park Capital Campaign Committee formed a distinguished Campaign Advisory Committee and began the campaign. Our fundraisers also saw great success. The Enchanted Forest welcomed almost five thousand visitors in November and provided a wide range of entertainment for children and adults. Touch a Truck, our June event, brought over three thousand visitors to Greenwich Town Hall to enjoy a multitude of trucks to climb and entertainment, such as bouncy castles, sports, crafts and live music as well as showcased some of our community partners. These are just some of the varied projects and programs that were successfully executed by the hard working members of the Junior League of Greenwich during the 2015/2016 year. On behalf of its nearly 700 members, the Junior League of Greenwich thanks you for your continued support in helping the Junior League make a lasting difference to the Greenwich community and allowing it to utilize and develop its leadership talents in such a significant way. All our best,

JLG 2015-2016 COMMUNITY GRANT AWARD

Community Grant Award Each year the Junior League of Greenwich awards up to $5,000 to a community organization to provide financial support for a community need that is not being met by current Junior League projects or programs. The grant is intended to fund new initiatives or expand programs relating to community needs, not subsidize existing programs, and will be presented in the Spring of each year. The Junior League of Greenwich Proudly Presented Two 2016 Community Grant Awards to the Greenwich Alliance for Education and Kids in Crisis The Greenwich Alliance for Education will apply the grant towards implementing a new program, Mastering Math on Saturdays at New Lebanon School. This is a “parent and child” five-week instructional pilot. The goal is to encourage parent participation in their child’s math education during the course of five Saturday mornings at New Lebanon School. Kids in Crisis will utilize the award to launch a pilot “social skills” program called Bucket Skills at three public elementary schools in Greenwich. Bucket Skills will be administered to two separate groups of five to eight kindergarten and first grade students for four-week sessions in three Greenwich public schools. The curriculum will be based on the nationwide “Bucket Fillers” program – the premise that all of us are carrying around an invisible bucket, and that being kind to each other and ourselves fills it up, and being a bully or rude empties it.

JLG 2015-2016 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS

Congratulations to the 2016 Community Service Award Recipients The first recipient, Julianna Song, is a senior at . Her passion for volunteering began in the 8th grade when our recipient took a year out of school, and traveled with her family to 10 countries working at nonprofits that her parents have supported over the years. In 2014 she was awarded the Congressional Gold Award after having completed 450 hours of voluntary public service within four years. She volunteers with numerous organizations, but said the organization that she was most committed to is Lily of the Valley Orphanage in South Africa. She took her experience another tremendous step further and created a website called www.nogifttoosmall.com that included a personal blog with photos of her volunteer experiences, as well as a donation page. To date, she has used this as a platform to raise in excess of $100,000. She and her brother applied for grants and were given $20,000 for Lily of the Valley’s continued work. The second recipient, Elizabeth Jones, is a senior at , with a strong academic background and a plethora of volunteer activities. She says that her most important volunteer activity is being a coach for the Unified Sports Team, which is the local chapter of Special Olympics at Greenwich High School. She has been part of this program since her freshman year and has enjoyed working with new athletes every sports season. During the second semester of her senior year, she merged her love of film production and her involvement with Unified Sports Team by helping to create a public service announcement called STOMP! that highlights students and staff getting rid of the hurtful labels used to describe individuals with special needs.
