Provenance: Donated by Dan Rostenkowski on December 30, 1994. Separations: 21 linear feet total were removed and destroyed. Less than 1 linear foot of duplicate materials were removed and destroyed. Also, two sub-series (Golf 1.8 and Thank You Correspondence 1.19) were sampled. Every fifth folder was kept creating a twenty-percent sample from both sub-series. Six linear feet from the sub-series 1.8 and 15 linear feet from sub- series 1.19 were removed and destroyed. See Also: Biographical Sketch Dan Rostenkowski was born January 2, 1928, in Chicago. He served as a Democratic Illinois state representative in the 68th general assembly (1952) prior to being elected to the Illinois state senate in 1954 and 1956. Rostenkowski was first elected to the 86th United States Congress in 1959 and served in seventeen succeeding Congresses until he was defeated for re-election in 1995. While in Congress he served as the chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means from the 97th through the 103rd Congresses, and of the Joint Committee on Taxation from the 97th through 101st Congresses. Mr. Rostenkowski passed away in Chicago, IL, on August 10, 2010. This sub-series was sampled. Every fifth folder was kept creating a twenty-percent sample. The original volume was 7.5 linear feet, and 6 linear feet of materials were removed and discarded. Sub-series 1.9: Illinois Materials, 1952-1994, Boxes 306-341 Sub-series includes correspondence, reports, reference materials, publications, newspaper clippings, press releases, newsletters, handwritten notes, tables/charts, memos, editorials, statements/speeches, maps, agendas/schedules, and House resolutions. Subjects include transportation, Cook County, state government/departments, Congressional districts, healthcare, Democratic Party, economic development, energy, and environment. Sub-series 1.10: Invitations, 1960-1994, Boxes 341-356 Sub-series includes accepted, rejected, and extended invitations, correspondence, and carbon copies. Subjects include Chicago/Illinois, Democratic Party, speaking engagements, business meetings, committee meetings, and dinners. Sub-series is arranged thematically according to whether the invitation was accepted/rejected/extended and then chronologically within each category.
