The album has fifty pages; each page has a capacity for four photographs, and most of the photographs (cartes-de-visite) are of Confederate enlisted men and officers. The collection contains a total of 137 cartes-de-visite (1862-1900, undated), and thirty-one black and white copy photographs (created March 9, 1984) of some of those cartes-de-visite. Of the cartes-de-visite, 129 are individual portraits, three are group portraits, and five are copy photographs of art works used as filler cards. See the container list for a list of individuals. Twenty-four individual photographers are represented in the album. See the appendix for a list of them. Each image is identified by a unique item number. Each number starts with the manuscript number – 2572 – followed by a “zero” place holder and the album page number on which the image was originally placed. Following the page number is an alpha designator indicating that image’s location on that page: a = top left b= top right c= bottom left d = bottom right. For example: 2572 / 0 / 10 / c = manuscript number / zero placeholder / page 10 / bottom left Three cartes-de-visite were found loose in the album and so have no associated page number / location. These three images have an “x” designator following the manuscript number and no alpha designator following the item number. For example: 2572 / x / 0 / 0 / 1 = manuscript number / “x” designator / zero placeholder / zero placeholder / item number The thirty-one black and white copy photographs have a “c” designator following the manuscript number and no other alpha designator following the item number. Not all album image slots contained images. Any slots without images are so indicated in the container list by the words “No image.” Page 4 of 23 CIVIL WAR PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM Mss. 2572 1862-1900 SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, LSU LIBRARIES SERIES DESCRIPTIONS Series I.
