The disappearing native mammals of northern Australia 1 SUMMARY Since European settlement, the deepest loss of Australian biodiversity has been the spate of extinctions of endemic mammals. Historically, these losses occurred mostly in inland and in temperate parts of the country, and largely between 1890 and 1950. A new wave of extinctions is now threatening Australian mammals, this time in northern Australia. Many mammal species are in sharp decline across the north, even in extensive natural areas managed primarily for conservation. The main evidence of this decline comes consistently from two contrasting sources: robust scientifi c monitoring programs and more broad-scale Indigenous knowledge. The main drivers of the mammal decline in northern Australia include inappropriate fi re regimes (too much fi re) and predation by feral cats. Cane Toads are also implicated, particularly to the recent catastrophic decline of the Northern Quoll. Furthermore, some impacts are due to vegetation changes associated with the pastoral industry. Disease could also be a factor, but to date there is little evidence for or against it. Based on current trends, many native mammals will become extinct in northern Australia in the next 10-20 years, and even the largest and most iconic national parks in northern Australia will lose native mammal species. This problem needs to be solved. The fi rst step towards a solution is to recognise the problem, and this publication seeks to alert the Australian community and decision makers to this urgent issue. -

Any substantive additions obtained during the consultation on the draft has been cited within the advice. Readers may note that conservation advices resulting from the Action Plan for Australian Mammals show minor differences in formatting relative to other conservation advices. These reflect the desire to efficiently prepare a large number of advices by adopting the presentation approach of the Action Plan for Australian Mammals, and do not reflect any difference in the evidence used to develop the recommendation. Taxonomy Conventionally accepted as Bettongia penicillata (Gray 1837). Two subspecies are recognised: B. p. penicillata in south-eastern Australia, now Extinct; and B. p. ogilbyi in south-western Australia. The subspecific classification of Bettongia penicillata is unresolved. It is possible that the two subspecies represent distant ends of a cline that terminated in south-eastern Australia (subspecies penicillata ) and south-western Australia (subspecies ogilbyi ). A species in northern Queensland ( B. tropica ) was originally described as a subspecies of B. penicillata , but is no longer recognised as part of that species. This assessment applies to the entire species, B. penicillata , although only one subspecies, B. p. ogilbyi , is extant. Summary of assessment Conservation status Endangered: Criterion 1 (A2)(b)(e) and Criterion 2 B2(a),(b)(ii,iii,iv). -
2020 AWC Intern Program
2020 AWC Intern Program Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of Australia’s threatened wildlife and their habitats. Funded primarily by donations, AWC is taking action to protect Australia’s wildlife by: • Establishing a network of sanctuaries that protect threatened wildlife and ecosystems; • Implementing practical, on-ground conservation programs to protect the wildlife at our sanctuaries: these programs include feral animal control, fire management, and the translocation of threatened species; • Conducting scientific research that help address the key threats to our native wildlife; and • Hosting visitor programs at our sanctuaries for the purpose of education and promoting awareness of the plight of Australia’s wildlife. AWC offers opportunities for promising graduate students to gain valuable field experience in conservation research via its Internship Program. In 2020, AWC will offer a total of twelve internships, of 4.5 – 6 months duration, across its network of sanctuaries. Each internship has been designed to provide an exciting training program. The program is designed to introduce conservation biologists to a variety of sanctuaries with a host of different ecosystems, flora and fauna, field techniques, and conservation issues. The internships provide a modest living stipend for the duration of the program, plus travel assistance. • North-west Interns will spend 6 months at Mornington, Marion Downs, Tableland, Charnley River- Artesian Range, Yampi [WA] and Newhaven [NT], with possible trips to other NW managed properties. • North-east Interns will spend 6 months based in Cairns* with trips to Brooklyn, Piccaninny Plains, Mt Zero-Taravale, Bowra and Curramore [QLD], Pungalina Seven-Emu, Bullo River Station and/or Wongalara [NT] • South-west Interns (Karakamia, Paruna and Faure Island) will spend 5 months at Karakamia, Paruna and Faure Island with the possibility of brief visits to Mt Gibson [WA]. -

Sadly, Mt Zero and its wildlife are threatened by logging and grazing. AWC discovered Mt Zero, deep in the Coane Mountain Range, when our scientists visited north Queensland last year. They were delighted to find a property rich in native mammals - a real ‘hotspot’ for Australia’s threatened mammal fauna. -
State of Australia's Threatened Macropods
State of Australia’s threatened macropods WWF-Australia commissioned a report into the state of Australia’s threatened macropods. The report summarises the status of threatened macropod species within Australia and identifies a priority list of species on which to focus further gap analysis. This information will inform and guide WWF in future threatened species conservation planning. The threatened macropods of Australia have been identified by WWF as a group of threatened species of global significance. This is in recognition of the fact that kangaroos and wallabies are amongst the most recognisable species in the world, they have substantial cultural and economic significance and significant rates of species extinction and decline means the future for many of the remaining species is not certain. Seventy-six macropod species are listed, or in the process of being listed, on the IUCN red-list. A total of forty-two of these species, or more than 50 per cent, are listed as threatened at some level. Threatened macropod species were ranked according to three criteria: • Conservation status, which was determined from four sources: IUCN Red List, Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999), State legislation, IUCN Global Mammal Assessment Project • Occurrence within an identified WWF global priority ecoregion • Genetic uniqueness Summary of threatened macropods Musky rat kangaroo The musky rat kangaroo is a good example of how protected areas can aid in securing a species’ future. It is generally common within its small range and the population is not declining. It inhabits rainforest in wet tropical forests of Far North Queensland, and large tracts of this habitat are protected in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area of Far North Queensland. -

2021 AWC Ecology & Conservation Internship Program Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife at 30 sanctuaries in which we own or manage in partnership, covering a total of more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. With a focus on practical land management, informed by world- class science, AWC is implementing a dynamic new model for conservation. AWC’s mission - to deliver effective conservation for all native animal species and their habitats - is achieved by: • Operations – delivering effective large-scale land management including fire management, feral animal control, weed control and infrastructure management. • Science – delivering a nationally-coherent program of ecological surveys with a focus on monitoring key conservation assets and threats, conducting applied research relevant to wildlife conservation, implementing conservation programs including reintroductions, and providing advice to management. • Fundraising – mobilising finance (primarily, tax deductible donations) from the general public and philanthropists including through effective communication of AWC conservation programs. Three subspecies of Petrogale concinna have been described; the other two subspecies are P. c. concinna (nabarlek (Victoria River District)) and P. c. canescens (nabarlek (Top End)). Their validity has not been tested by modern genetic methods, and the geographic bounds (particularly of P. c. concinna and P. c. canescens) are not resolved (Woinarski et al., 2014). However, the subspecies have been accepted by the Australian Faunal Directory. Summary of assessment Conservation status Endangered: Criterion 2 B2(a),b(i)(ii)(iii)(iv)(v) Species can be listed as threatened under state and territory legislation. Martínez-Pérez I Abstract Between 1901 and 1931, there were at least six anecdotal records of disease outbreaks in mainland quokkas (Setonix brachyurus) that were associated with mass. This time period pre-dates the arrival of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes). Despite these outbreaks, little or no research has been carried out to establish health and disease baseline data of the fragmented and scattered, extant populations. Epidemiological data was determined for a range of potential pathogens, and established physiological reference intervals of apparently healthy, wild quokkas on Rottnest Island and mainland locations. There were significant differences between Rottnest Island and mainland quokkas. Rottnest Island animals had haemograms with mark evidence of oxidative injury and bone marrow response consistent with a regenerative normocytic hypochromic anaemia. Except alkaline phosphatase (ALP), all blood chemistry analytes where higher in mainland animals, with particular emphasis on creatine kinase (CK), alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST) and vitamin E. Some other key findings include a widespread presence of a novel herpesvirus (MaHV-6), the recovery of Cryptococcus neoformans var.
