The particular topics that I address include: the dominant forms of historical imagination in the community and its preoccupation with contested historical topics, especially in regards to World War II; immigrants’ disagreement with liberal gender politics and sex education programs at public schools, which I interpret as a manifestation of their insecurity about their children’s identities and their parental rights; ideas about education among Russian-speaking immigrants, which reveal their concerns about social class and privilege and their striving to ascertain a sense of belonging to a higher social status in their new country; and, finally, the aspirations for inclusion and full participation in Canadian society that drive their political and cultural activism. I examine how class aspirations based on a high level of education conflate with cultural and moral values of the Russian-speaking community and form the basis for their political mobilization and struggle for their right to be included in the society as a group with their own distinct cultural and historical narratives. I study political participation of Russian-speaking immigrants as a diasporic group in Canada and show how their citizenship practices are simultaneously informed by their Soviet and post-Soviet experiences and by the Canadian political discourse, including the politics of multiculturalism. My research contributes to the understanding of Russian-speaking immigrants in Canada and their experiences of participation in Canadian society. My dissertation also addresses how Canadian multiculturalism policies impact various groups of Canadians who struggle for their right to be included in the society as a group with their own distinct cultural and historical narratives. Exploring the Russian-speaking immigrant community in Canada, I analyze how their allegiance to their new country and the ways in which they embrace its citizenship practices co-exist with a sense of belonging and allegiance to their homeland. Overall, my study of Russian-speaking immigrants contributes to understanding how diasporas negotiate their multiple ways of belonging in a world where multiple political allegiances are often seen as threatening and questionable. iii Lay Summary This dissertation studies the Russian-speaking immigrant community in Toronto. I address how the community members integrate in Canadian society and develop forms of political participation in their new country, while at the same time maintaining their sense of belonging and allegiance to their countries of origin. I discuss such topics as immigrants’ disavowal of liberal gender politics and sex education programs at public schools in Ontario; participation in celebrations of the Soviet victory in WWII; concerns about their parental rights; and ideas about education and social class aspirations. I study political participation of Russian-speaking immigrants in Canada in order to understand how diasporas negotiate their ways of belonging in a world where multiple political allegiances are often seen as threatening and questionable. iv Preface This dissertation is an original intellectual product of the author, Anastasia Rogova. While the Immortal Regiment March began as a nonpolitical private grassroots initiative in Russia in 2011, it was soon hijacked by the Russian government to serve official propaganda efforts that praises Russian military victories. The aggressiveness and ideological orientation of the marches manifest themselves through effective visual symbols, most recognizably the St. George ribbon. This ribbon has recently became a symbol of Russian backed troops in Eastern Ukraine. As well as pro-Kremlin organizations, such as AntiMaidan, NOD and SERB that attack pro-democracy activists in Russia. Thereafter, the Immortal Regiment March was effectively transplanted abroad via organizations like the Russian Youth of America, and gained popularity in many parts of the U.S., including cities in N.Y.

New artists and new music are an essential component of great orchestras and throughout its history, the TSO has been active in fostering the work of emerging artists and composers. 12 In the 2012/2013 season, the TSO performed three world premières, two North American premières, eight Canadian premières, six newly co-commissioned works, and four newly commissioned works. 13 The new faces included the appointment of Steven Reineke as Principal Pops Conductor and the establishment of the RBC Resident Conductor and RBC Affiliate Composer programmes with the appointments of Shalom Bard and Kevin Lau, respectively. In September I led the orchestra on its eighth Northern Residency in North Bay and Timmins with repertoire that included the TSO commission The Hockey Sweater by Abigail Richardson and narrated by well-known Canadian author Roch Carrier. Over the five-day residency we performed for more than 10,000 students and adults in public concerts, and provided 48 free in-school performances and nine masterclasses. We have also added new dimensions to the concert experience by including visual elements such as James Westwater and Nicholas Bardonnay’s photochoreography of Smetana’s Mà Vlast (My Homeland), an “Audience-Choice” programme, and for the New Creations Festival we commissioned MIT professor Tod Machover to create a symphonic work written for and by the citizens of Toronto entitled A Toronto Symphony: Concerto for Composer and City.

Families and advocates will march on the legislature’s south lawn and stand still for five minutes at 11:30 a.m. Coronavirus scare shines light on need for public health funding: NDP The Opposition and government traded barbs over concerns about the coronavirus at Queen’s Park on Wednesday. That’s despite the latest update from provincial health officials that there are no new cases beyond the three previously confirmed, and as the number of cases under investigation continued to drop this week. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath held a press conference to call on the PCs to reverse future ​ ​ funding cuts to public health, while Health Minister Christine Elliott’s office fired back that ​ ​ Horwath was trying to “score political points.” “Ontario’s expert public health officials have been unanimously clear: Ontario is prepared to effectively respond to the 2019 novel coronavirus, something Andrea Horwath herself acknowledged,” Elliott’s spokesperson Travis Kann said in an email statement. ​ ​ Kann added that public health officials have briefed the NDP three times on the matter in order to ensure all MPPs are informed and “to demonstrate that the health and safety of Ontarians is and always should be above politics.” Horwath did admit Ontario’s response to the outbreak has been “outstanding” but stressed that “we need to keep it that way.” She urged the PCs to cancel planned funding cuts and asked the government to review public health resources in order to keep Ontarians safe in the future.
