Or what had happened in the past? Ask your school friend about a film that he or she has seen and discuss what the theme of the film was about. Match some themes that appear in the films above. What do these themes mean? (1) global warming- O Dia Depois de Amanha (2) justice- Erin Brockovich Uma Mulher de Talento (3) love- Erin, The Core, Deep Impact, The Day After (4) astronomy – Impacto Profundo (5) electromagnetism – O Núcleo (6) environment – Uma Verdade Inconveniente ( ) the natural world in which people, animals and plants live. ( ) a strong feeling of deep affection for sb/sth, especially a member of your family or a friend. ( ) the scientific study of the sun, moon, stars, planets, etc. Part II Is it possible to swim in the Thames river? www.thamesboatcruises.com/ In your opinion: What is pollution? What are the causes of global pollution? What are the effects of water pollution? Is global warming a serious problem? The map below shows some places that contribute to the increase of global warming in our planet. Look and check: Think about these questions: WHAT I KNOW WHAT I AM WHAT I HOPE TO ABOUT GLOBAL UNSURE ABOUT IT LEARN ABOUT IT WARMING AND WATER POLLUTION Write about: Have you ever seen pollution in your city? When? Give examples: Match these words to their translation in Portuguese: Verbs Nouns Translation 1 To harm 2 resource ( ) recurso ( ) prejudicar 3 to grow 4 earth ( ) terra ( ) crescer 5 to die 6 rate ( ) taxa ( ) morrer The Water Water is undoubtedly the most precious natural resource that exists on earth. Compound of two atoms of hydrogen combine with one atom of oxygen to form a molecule of water. It is essencial for everything that grows and prospers. The humans recognize this fact, but pollute the rivers, lakes and oceans. We are harming our planet to the point where organisms are dying at a very alarming rate. Our drinking water has become greatly affected. In order to combat water pollution, we must understand the problems and become part of the solution. Observe the picture: the polluted water. feww.wordpress.com Chemicals In Our Waters Are Affecting Humans And Aquatic Life In Unanticipated Ways ScienceDaily (Feb. 21, 2008) http://www.sciencedaily.com Attention to these words! Amount=quantidade Pollutants = substâncias poluidoras emitted = produzidos carried = carregadas Point source= ponto exato da poluição Nonpoint source= não se conhece o ponto onde ocorre a poluição Effluents= wasted liquid, especially chemicals produced by factories, or sewage WATER POLLUTION Water pollution occurs when there is a large amount of polluted materials in the water, so the water is considered polluted. There are two types of water pollutants: point source and nonpoint source. Point sources are pollution that occurs when harmful substances are emitted directly into the water. A nonpoint source delivers pollutants indirectly through environmental changes. An example of this type of water pollution is when fertilizer from a field is carried by rain. Nonpoint sources are much more difficult to control. Adapted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki Effluents from industrial or municipal sources may contain hundreds to thousands of chemicals. (Credit: iStockphoto) Industry is a huge source of water pollution, it produces pollutants that are extremely harmful to people and the environment. Visit some sites about the topics http://www.water-pollution.org.uk/industrialwaste.html What can we do to keep the water clean? Discuss in groups with your friends some ideas to keep the water clean and reduce the effects of global warming. Match the vocabulary: 1. thickening blanket ( ) camada de gelo 2. trapping ( ) aquecimento 3. warm up ( ) tempestade de poeira 4. tons ( ) enchentes 5. nearly ( ) próximo 6. endure ( ) permanece 7. worst ( ) toneladas 8. wildfire ( ) fogo sem controle 9. floods ( ) pior 10. dust storms ( ) camada fina 11. ice cap ( ) aprisionando In your opinion, check (T) true or (F) false: ( ) Pollution can be one cause of Global Warming. ( ) Pollution is one effect of Global Warming. The Pollution and Global Warming Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution -- they produce 2.5 billion tons every year. Automobiles, the second largest source, create nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO2 annually. Global warming is already causing damage in many parts of the United States. In 2002, Colorado, Arizona and Oregon endured their worst wildfire seasons ever. The same year, drought created severe dust storms in Montana, Colorado and Kansas, and floods caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage in Texas, Montana and North Dakota. Since the early 1950s, snow accumulation has declined 60 percent and winter seasons have shortened in some areas of the Cascade Range in Oregon and Washington. Of course, the impacts of global warming are not limited to the United States. In 2003, extreme heat waves caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe and more than 1,500 deaths in India. And in what scientists regard as an alarming sign of events to come, the area of the Arctic's perennial polar ice cap is declining at the rate of 9 percent per decade. (Adapted from: http://www.nrdc.org/globalWarming) Answer these questions Do you belive that carbon dioxide pollution can be reduced by the plants in the next future? And what about the automobiles? Do you think that they are going to pollute less in the next few years? Have ou heard about other impacts of global warming around the world? Can you write some of them? Make a research In relation to the text above, can you write some damages that occurred in Brazil caused by pollution? Part III LET´S PLAY ERIN BROCKOVICH The real Erin Brockovich – Julia Roberts - 2001 This film is based on a true story. Julia Roberts stars a young mother that fights for justice. Caitlin McCoy: Hello and welcome to another episode of CleanLaw, our podcast at the Environmental and Energy Law Program at Harvard Law School. This is Caitlin McCoy and I'm a staff attorney at the program. Today, I have the incredible privilege of speaking with Erin Brockovich, who hardly needs an introduction since her name has become synonymous with efforts to clean up contaminated water supplies hold polluters accountable and establish common sense protections for water quality. Welcome Erin. We're honored to have you as a guest on the podcast. Erin Brockovich: Hi. It's nice to be here today. Thanks for the invite and I'm just as honored to be here. Caitlin: That's really flattering. Thank you. You've written a new book that I just finished reading. It's called Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do about It. First of all, congratulations on a fantastic book. Erin: Thank you. I hope you enjoyed it. Caitlin: I really did. When I first got it, I thought wow this is pretty long, but it's worth every page because it's one of the best explainers on water quality that I've read. You break down the laws, the standards, major water quality issues facing the country and throughout the entire book, you're weaving in really moving stories of people who decide to take a stand for clean water in their communities and beyond.

Joy Feeney Topics in Political Economy Professor David Ruccio December 17, 2008 The Economic Cost of Prevention Modern economic theory seems to disregard many practices necessary for the implementation of such theory. The 2000 hit movie Erin Brockovich tells the story of the missing pieces of economic theory throughout the battle of the underdog. The movie itself begs the question what is the truth? Truths are hard to come by and with a malfunctioning economic system, even more of a challenge. Brockovich depicts two sides of the economic argument, each showing and disproving economic practices left in and out of the current system. Brockovich utilizes the juxtaposition of the good-guy-bad-guy story in order to shed light on themes of corporate greed, virtuous values, and the strength of numbers in unity. Throughout the film, these themes are tried and tested, creating an alternative economic story to the current economic perspective thrust upon the film and society. Based on the true story of Erin Brockovich-Ellis, the film targets utility bigwig Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) based in San Francisco, California for lying to residents of Hinckley California about unhealthy amounts of hexavalent chromium in groundwater. The chromium was used to prevent corrosion in water towers on the Hinckley campus of PG&E since the 1950s. The chromium-laced wastewater was then released to unlined retention ponds that infiltrated the ground water of residents in the Hinckley area. This hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium 6, is known to cause medical problems such as uterine cancer, spinal deterioration, and Hodgkin’s disease.

Erin Brockovich Dir: Steven Soderbergh, USA, 2000 A review by Matthew Nelson, University of Wisconsin- Madison, USA When a film opens with the title "based on a true story," a sinking feeling of gloom comes over me. Will this be yet another typical triumph over adversity, human-interest flick, cranked out by the Hollywood machine to force-feed an increasingly lazy mass audience interested only in star power and happy endings? The lack of original story lines and plot conventions has turned the American motion picture industry into a creator of shallow popular interest films bested in their absurdity and lack of depth only by made-for-TV movies. While it has been said that our greatest stories come from real life, the griminess of the modern world rarely fits into the tightly regulated limitations surrounding mainstream American screenwriting. Details that do not fit within the formula of a marketable "true story" film, which must attempt to appeal to a large audience base of diverse people, are edited out in favor of more pleasing elements, such as a love story, gripping court room confession, or death bed recovery. With this admittedly jaded viewpoint, I went into Erin Brockovich hoping for the best (a rather vacant, feel-good movie, forgotten before I had pulled out of the multi-plex parking garage), but expected far worse. To my pleasant surprise, it turned out to be neither. Director Steven Soderbergh (of Sex, Lies and Videotape fame) manages to pull off an amazingly interesting film, with snappy writing, fine casting, and plenty of that feel good energy, that does not fall into sugary sentimentalism.

This sign, positioned near PG&E's Hinkley compressor station, warns people that the "waste water" (containing hexavalent chromium) "in use" is dangerous. No such warning sign was in place before groundwater remediation, at the Hinkley site, began. Image online via the LA Times. Many people and domestic animals in the high desert town of Hinkley, California were getting sick. Some had died. Since residents depended on the local groundwater supply for all their needs, were the illnesses somehow related to PG&E's Gas Compressor Station located nearby? On December 7, 1987 officials from the company advised the State of California they had detected levels of hexavalent chromium (chrome 6) in a groundwater monitoring well north of the compressor station's waste water ponds. The levels were ten times greater than the maximum amount allowed by law. Known as a cancer-causing chemical since the 1920s, chrome 6 is especially dangerous to lungs. Since many of the Hinkley residents were reporting respiratory problems, a link to chrome 6 contamination seemed possible. After PG&E reported the pollution to the government, company officials started a program to buy every piece of property in the community thought to be affected by the pollution.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 • MICROSOFT THEATER MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN/CEO o say that television changed my life is not an exaggeration. In fact, it may be an understatement. This industry has allowed me to travel the world, meet extraordinary people, even win some awards — including seven Emmys. But without question, serving as Television Academy chairman was one of the high Tpoints of my career. It was a privilege to help guide this organization during a period of dynamic change, and I am proud of what our leadership accomplished during that time. Among my priorities as chairman was to increase diversity and inclusion in the television industry. The same is true of my work as a producer, which allows me to advocate in a more immediate and personal way for inclusion by creating opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to share their talents and advance their own careers. In this respect, as in many others, my personal values are in alignment with those of the Academy, and as I reflect on 2018, I am pleased to note the continuation of many positive steps within the Academy during the Emmy Awards’ 70th anniversary year. One example: When we heard from members and programmers that, with so many shows in the Emmy mix, they wanted additional FYC events to provide voters and creators more opportunities to engage prior to the balloting period, we increased the number of FYC events from sixty-one in 2017 to more than a hundred by opening up weekends and allowing more than one event on a single night.
