Do you think that films can help us understand what can happen in the future? Or what had happened in the past? Ask your school friend about a film that he or she has seen and discuss what the theme of the film was about.

Match some themes that appear in the films above. What do these themes mean? (1) global warming- O Dia Depois de Amanha (2) justice- Erin Brockovich Uma Mulher de Talento (3) love- Erin, The Core, Deep Impact, The Day After (4) astronomy – Impacto Profundo (5) electromagnetism – O Núcleo (6) environment – Uma Verdade Inconveniente

( ) the natural world in which people, animals and plants live. ( ) the increase in temperature of the earth’s atmosphere, that is caused by the increase of particular gases, especially carbon dioxide. ( ) the fair treatment of people: laws based on the principles of justice. ( ) the production of a magnetic field by means of an electric current. ( ) a strong feeling of deep affection for sb/sth, especially a member of your family or a friend. ( ) the scientific study of the sun, moon, stars, planets, etc.

In your opinion: What is ? What are the causes of global pollution? What are the effects of water pollution? Is global warming a serious problem? The map below shows some places that contribute to the increase of global warming in our planet. Look and check:

Think about these questions: WHAT I KNOW WHAT I AM WHAT I HOPE TO ABOUT GLOBAL UNSURE ABOUT IT LEARN ABOUT IT WARMING AND WATER POLLUTION

Write about:

Have you ever seen pollution in your city? When? Give examples:

Match these words to their translation in Portuguese: Verbs Nouns Translation 1 To harm 2 resource ( ) recurso ( ) prejudicar 3 to grow 4 earth ( ) terra ( ) crescer 5 to die 6 rate ( ) taxa ( ) morrer

The Water Water is undoubtedly the most precious natural resource that exists on earth. Compound of two atoms of hydrogen combine with one atom of oxygen to form a molecule of water. It is essencial for everything that grows and prospers. The humans recognize this fact, but pollute the rivers, lakes and oceans. We are harming our planet to the point where organisms are dying at a very alarming rate. Our drinking water has become greatly affected. In order to combat water pollution, we must understand the problems and become part of the solution.

Observe the picture: the polluted water.

feww.wordpress.com Chemicals In Our Waters Are Affecting Humans And Aquatic Life In Unanticipated Ways ScienceDaily (Feb. 21, 2008) http://www.sciencedaily.com

Attention to these words!

Amount=quantidade

Pollutants = substâncias poluidoras emitted = produzidos carried = carregadas

Point source= ponto exato da poluição Nonpoint source= não se conhece o ponto onde ocorre a poluição

Effluents= wasted liquid, especially chemicals produced by factories, or sewage

WATER POLLUTION Water pollution occurs when there is a large amount of polluted materials in the water, so the water is considered polluted. There are two types of water pollutants: point source and nonpoint source. Point sources are pollution that occurs when harmful substances are emitted directly into the water. A nonpoint source delivers pollutants indirectly through environmental changes. An example of this type of water pollution is when fertilizer from a field is carried by rain. Nonpoint sources are much more difficult to control. Adapted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki

Effluents from industrial or municipal sources may contain hundreds to thousands of chemicals. (Credit: iStockphoto) Industry is a huge source of water pollution, it produces pollutants that are extremely harmful to people and the environment.

Visit some sites about the topics http://www.water-pollution.org.uk/industrialwaste.html

What can we do to keep the water clean? Discuss in groups with your friends some ideas to keep the water clean and reduce the effects of global warming.

Match the vocabulary: 1. thickening blanket ( ) camada de gelo 2. trapping ( ) aquecimento 3. warm up ( ) tempestade de poeira 4. tons ( ) enchentes 5. nearly ( ) próximo 6. endure ( ) permanece 7. worst ( ) toneladas 8. wildfire ( ) fogo sem controle 9. floods ( ) pior 10. dust storms ( ) camada fina 11. ice cap ( ) aprisionando

In your opinion, check (T) true or (F) false: ( ) Pollution can be one cause of Global Warming. ( ) Pollution is one effect of Global Warming.

The Pollution and Global Warming Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution -- they produce 2.5 billion tons every year. Automobiles, the second largest source, create nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO2 annually. Global warming is already causing damage in many parts of the United States. In 2002, , Arizona and endured their worst wildfire seasons ever. The same year, drought created severe dust storms in Montana, Colorado and Kansas, and floods caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage in , Montana and North Dakota. Since the early 1950s, snow accumulation has declined 60 percent and winter seasons have shortened in some areas of the Cascade Range in Oregon and Washington. Of course, the impacts of global warming are not limited to the United States. In 2003, extreme heat waves caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe and more than 1,500 deaths in India. And in what scientists regard as an alarming sign of events to come, the area of the Arctic's perennial polar ice cap is declining at the rate of 9 percent per decade. Answer these questions

Do you belive that carbon dioxide pollution can be reduced by the plants in the next future?

And what about the automobiles? Do you think that they are going to pollute less in the next few years?

Have ou heard about other impacts of global warming around the world? Can you write some of them?

Make a research In relation to the text above, can you write some damages that occurred in Brazil caused by pollution?

Part III

Let´s do some activities about what you have just watched

LISTENING ACTIVITY WHO SAID THESE WORDS IN THE FILM? (E) Erin (P) the professor at the University (D) Donna Jensen

Write (E) / (P) or (W): ( ) I don’t have any computer skills ( ) I don´t wanna move ( ) I got a couple of girls ( ) Why you’re corresponding with PG & E about your medical problems at all ( ) Well, they paid for the doctor’s visit ( ) There’s chrom six, … ( ) Chrom tree, which is fairly benign ( ) It gets into your DNA

Watch the scene in which Erin went to the Industry and got a sample of the water. You may say: a) The water is good to drink b) She offers the water to the lawyer c) She finds a dead frog d) She drinks the water

Put the chapters of the film in the correct sequence. ( ) Ed met Erin for the first time. ( ) Erin is fired at Ed’s office. ( ) Erin collects the water’s sample. ( ) Ed and Erin are at Jensen’s house. ( ) The Lawyers of PG & E have a meeting with Ed. ( ) Erin does a search for the case ( ) Erin and George give the news to Donna

Please pay attention on the scene and write what the problem faced by Erin is at this moment. George: How many numbers you got? Erin Brockovich: Oh, I got numbers comin' outta my ears. For instance: ten. George: Ten? Erin Brockovich: Yeah. That's how many months old my baby girl is. George: You got a little girl? Erin Brockovich: Yeah. Yeah, sexy, huh? How 'bout this for a number? Six. That's how old my other daughter is, eight is the age of my son, two is how many times I've been married - and divorced; sixteen is the number of dollars I have in my bank account. 850-3943. That's my phone number, and with all the numbers I gave you, I'm guessing zero is the number of times you're gonna call it.

______

What happened with the people that drank polluted water in Hinkley

In the film we can watch how people got cancer drinking polluted water. The Pacific Gas & Eletric Company polluted the water with chromium hexavalent. Industry use chromium to chromate pigments, paints, inks and plastics. All forms of hexavalent chromium are carcinogenic. The risk of developing cancer increases with the amount inhaled and the length of time exposure. The following abnormalities were detected in the people that drank that water: decrease white blood cells, stress and chronic fatigue, immunodeficiences, increased lymphocytes, infections, inflammation, chronic leukemia, outoimmune disorders, hemolytic anemia, systemic lupus erythmatosis.

Think: How Erin Brockovich help the people that are sick? Can you imagine yourself helping someone?

Do people know that they are sick at the begining of the story ? How they discover about the chromium hexavalent?

How important is your health for you?

Reflexion: As autoridades estão levando o problema da poluição a sério? Elas estão tomando as medidas necessárias para combater o problema? O problema da poluição é realmente tão sério, ou há certo exagero? Qual poderia ser a sua contribuição para evitar a poluição?

Task In groups of 5 visit one river of your city. Check and write about what you find. - Is there anybody fishing? - Is there any bad smell? - Is there any garbage? - How is the ground by the side of the river? - Can we swim in the river? - Are there boats on the river? - Are there houses beside the river? - How is the movement of the water? Fast? Slow? - Is waste water bumped from a factory into the river? - Has the river been polluted with toxic waste from local factories?

Extra Activity

In the film An Inconvenient Truth, you can see some scenes of polluted river and you can compare with that one that you have visited.
