Porter Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, Butte, MT 59701 Jennie Ridgley U.S. Geological Survey, Denver, CO 80225 With assistance from Duncan McBane, Jack Warne, Don French, and Denis Foley ROAD LOG FOR DAY 1: Billings to Chinook via Roundup, Winnett, Lewistown, Winifred, and Cleveland INTRODUCTION The following road log is in five separate legs over a travel distance of 317 miles, and covers Day 1 of the three-day field trip. It begins in Billings, MT and covers the traverse north across the Bull Mountains Basin onto the Central Montana Uplift, then west to Lewistown, north to Winifred, north across the Missouri River into the Bears Paw Mountains to Cleveland, and north to Chinook on the Montana Highline. Exposed strata will be principally Tertiary and Upper Cretaceous in age; Lower Cretaceous, Upper Jurassic, and Paleozoic strata will dominate the section in the Lewistown area. Figure 1 shows the route traveled in this road log for Day 1 and also for the other two days of the field trip. Figure 2, modified from Dobbin and Erdmann (1955) shows the structural features of central Montana. Figure 3 provides comparative stratigraphic columns for the region. Road logs for Days 2 and 3 of this Field Trip are provided in Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology Special Publication 113 (Porter, 1998), provided separately. LEG 1: Billings to Roundup, a distance of 45.2 mi (72.3 km). Traverses rocks of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary age across the Lake Basin Fault Zone and the Bull Mountains Basin. One rolling stop, south of Klein. LEG 2: Roundup to Winnett, a distance of 55.5 mi (88.8 km). Traverses the north flank of the Bull Mountains Basin, then onto the Central Montana Uplift across Tertiary and Cretaceous beds exposed in the Devils Basin Anticline and northward. STOPS 1 and 2. LEG 3: Winnett to Lewistown, a distance of 52.4 mi (83.8 km). Approximately parallels northwest- southeast trend of Central Montana Uplift, crossing Upper and Lower Cretaceous strata exposed in northwest-striking, low rolling folds subparallel to the uplift. Jurassic and Paleozoic beds exposed in domes in Lewistown area. No field stops. Lunch stop in Lewistown. 1 LEG 4: Lewistown to junction of State Highway 81, plus a round-trip loop on Hwy. 81, a distance of 51 mi (81.6 km). Traverses Upper Cretaceous beds and extensive gravel deposits exposed on flanks of Judith and South and North Moccasin Mountains. STOP 3. LEG 5: State Highway 81 junction north to Winifred and Chinook, a distance of 113 mi (180.8 km) via McClelland Ferry and Cleveland. Traverses Upper Cretaceous rocks in gravity-slide folds and faults south of Bears Paw Mountains. In mountains, Tertiary volcanic rocks flank a Cretaceous sediment-filled graben. Alternate route in wet weather is Winifred to Big Sandy via County Road 236 across Missouri River at Judith Landing (PN) Bridge, then north to Havre, east to Chinook. No field stops, either route. LEG I: BILLINGS TO ROUNDUP Nye-Bowler fault zone and Cat Creek Anticline. To the south, however, the highly (surface mapping of Fox Hills to east by E.M. dissected dark shales down to the valley floor are Upper Wilde (pers. comm.), suggests Fox Hills is present Cretaceous units earlier assigned to the Colorado Shale, in this area). Gentle north dip continues to reflect now assigned to the Mowry Shale and Belle Fourche south flank of Bull Mountains Basin Shale west of Blue Creek (at Blue Creek Road Exit off I- 2.6 90), and to the Carlile Shale and Niobrara Formation 6.9 Shepherd-Acton crossroad.

    Thomas Stuart Homestead Historic Context Report Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site Avana Andrade Public Lands History Center at Colorado State University 2/1/2012 1 Thomas Stuart Homestead Site: Historic Context Report Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site in Deer Lodge Montana is currently developing plans for a new contact station. One potential location will affect the site of a late-nineteenth-century historic homestead. Accordingly, the National Park Service and the Montana State Historic Preservation Office need more information about the historic importance of the Thomas Stuart homestead site to determine future decisions concerning the contact station. The following report provides the historic contexts within which to assess the resource’s historic significance according to National Register of Historic Places guidelines. The report examines the site’s association with Thomas Stuart, a Deer Lodge pioneer, and the Menards, a French- Canadian family, and presents the wider historical context of the fur trade, Deer Lodge’s mixed cultural milieu, and the community’s transformation into a settled, agrarian town. Though only indications of foundations and other site features remain at the homestead, the report seeks to give the most complete picture of the site’s history. Site Significance and Integrity The Thomas Stuart homestead site is evaluated according to the National Register of Historic Places, a program designed in the 1960s to provide a comprehensive listing of the United States’ significant historic properties. Listing on the National Register officially verifies a site’s importance and requires park administrators or land managers to consider the significance of the property when planning federally funded projects.

    The petrogenesis of the alkaline rocks of the Judith Mountains, central Montana by Paula Jean Barrick A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE in Earth Science Montana State University © Copyright by Paula Jean Barrick (1982) Abstract: The Judith Mountains are part of the central Montana alkaline province. , Intrusive igneous activity began in the Judith Mountains about 68-69 m.y. ago with the emplacement of alkali-calcic plutons. Volume-trically minor but widespread alkaline igneous rocks were intruded 62-65 m.y. ago in the same terrane. This study focuses on the origin of the second (alkaline) intrusive event, which emplaced two different suites of alkaline igneous rocks. The alkaline rocks are divided into two groups based on silica saturation: 1) a quartz-bearing assemblage consisting of syenite which contains xenoliths of alkali gabbro; and 2) a nepheline-bearing assemblage which includes tinguaite (a textural variety of nepheline syenite) and xenoliths of nepheline pyroxenite or ijolite. The two assemblages may be termed "mildly" and "strongly" alkaline. The parent magma may have been kimberlite, since carbonatite-kimberlite magmas are known elsewhere in the province and local alteration (fenitization) suggests the presence of a buried carbonatite body. However, quartz-bearing alkaline rocks cannot be derived from an undersaturated kimberlitic magma except under certain special conditions. Therefore, the mildly and strongly alkaline rocks either formed from separate parent magmas, or formed from a single parent magma under two very different sets of conditions. The nearly contemporaneous emplacement of the two groups suggests a single parent magma pulse.

    CRAZY MOUNTAINS EMU (Hunting Districts 315 and 580) Description: This 1,708-square-mile EMU includes the Crazy Mountain Range and adjacent foothill and prairie habitats in south central Montana. The area is a mixture of private (78%) and public (22%) lands, including portions of both the Gallatin and Lewis and Clark national forests (16%), state school trust lands (DNRC – 5%), and USDI Bureau of Land Management (BLM – 0.2%). Land ownership patterns within the boundary of the national forests are characterized by checkerboard ownership. The EMU contains two roadless areas encompassing 149,467 acres of public and private lands that offer wilderness-type recreation. However, much of this roadless area is not elk habitat. This EMU contains over 590,000 acres of occupied elk habitat (54% of EMU). National forest lands provide a large portion of spring, summer and fall elk habitat, but private lands in mountain foothill and sagebrush-grassland habitats provide over 80% of elk winter range during normal winters and virtually all of the available winter range during severe winters. Public Access: Access by road to elk habitat is limited in most of HD 580 where the checkerboard pattern of land ownership complicates management of access. With few exceptions, public access to elk habitat on the north and east slopes of the Crazies is controlled entirely by private landowners. There are only 3 points in HD 580 where the public may legally access national forest lands – the Big Timber Canyon road in the southeast corner, the Cottonwood Creek/Forest Lake road on the north end and Sixteenmile Creek in the northwest corner of the hunting district.
