A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.

  • Bandersnatch, a Standalone Episode of Science–Ction Series Black Mirror, Presenting Viewers with Interactive Features That Actively Impact the Lm's Narrative
Netix’s B andersnatch and the battle of services for consumer screen time The platformisation of interfaciality and infrastructuralisation of streaming services Lucas Prado Amaral Student ID: 12239615 MA New Media and Digital Culture University of Amsterdam Supervisor: dr. Alex Gekker Second reader: dr. Marc D. Tuters June 2019 Abstract On December 28, 2018, streaming service Netix released an interactive lm entitled Black Mirror: Bandersnatch , a standalone episode of science–ction series Black Mirror, presenting viewers with interactive features that actively impact the lm's narrative. Bandersnatch came about in a time when many big companies from the entertainment and media world, such as Disney and Apple, announced the future launch of their own streaming service, posing as direct competitors to Netix. By taking a theoretical bifocal approach, as proposed by Plantin et al., I take Netix as my object of study and analyse it from the perspective of platform studies and infrastructure studies, in that they reveal the streaming service's dual nature. As a contribution to the eld, I propose two phenomena: the platformisation of interfaciality, presenting new formats for storytelling, and allowing for the collection of more user data; and the infrastructuralisation of streaming services , whether through creating devices that support its online operations, or connecting to a network that reaches a global-scale. As the streaming race gets more competitive for Netix, I analyse the ways in which Bandersnatch becomes a useful strategy for the company against other services, in terms of: (1) all of the behavioural metrics it yields, (2) new possibilities for revenue sources (such as product placement), and (3) consuming more of users’ screen time.

CINERGIE il cinema e le altre arti 10 ART & Seriality, Repetition and Innovation in Breaking Bad’s Recaps MEDIA FILES and Teasers Introduction I will explore recaps and cold opens in Breaking Bad as serial and cross-medial forms, focusing on the socio-cultural and semiotic mechanism of reinterpretation through narrative condensation or narrative expansion. Condensation means using each episode’s initial recap not only to summarise important actions and dialogues from previous episodes, but also to reopen narrative fragments from previous seasons in order to understand the current episode. In a more expanded medial ecosystem, the ‘internal’ recaps of the series interface with other forms of ‘external’ metanarrative redundancy, such as the synopsis, the encyclopedias and the wikis that can be found online. They also deal with other additive comprehension logics of narrative expansion, such as the offi cial Breaking Bad web episodes, short chapters released online and used to keep the viewers’ expectations high in the time between two seasons. I will analyse how recaps change over the course of the seasons, and how teasers can be aimed at tricking the viewer into false narrative tracks, but also at expanding the narrative storyworld through unexpected short prequels. Audiovisual recaps are paratexts1 given as initial thresholds and intertextual products that interact with the past and present narrative of a series and are designed to build narrative maps for the viewers. Teasers often take the shape of alienating prologues, which obtain to sidetrack the viewer or to anticipate what will happen in the episode2. In this article we basically investigate two serial products as Mittel3 defi nes them: the “retelling” strategy, which includes redundancy and repetition, and the “suspense” strategy, which creates cliff hangers and narrative expectations.

How To Make Games In GameMaker Studio Introduction How To Make Games In GameMaker Studio Copyright © 2017 Leon Oscar Kidando About the Author I’m Leon Oscar Kidando Lwoga, a game developer from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. I have been passionate about making for many years. However it was in 2013 that I decided to pursue Game Development as more than just a hobby. In 2015, I released my first commercial game for windows Battle Buggy Grounds. After learning more about game development, years later, I published a handful of other games (which you can find on myGameJolt and itch.io profiles). My next commercial game project is Battle Buggy Glitch. I’m determined to turn my passion for developing games into more than just a hobby. What this book covers This book covers making 3 games in GameMaker Studio using GML (Game Maker Language) code. It does not include publishing your games in market places. Rather it focuses only making these 3 video games from scratch. It will cover concepts and the fundamentals of developing games in general. Exploring common game features such as manipulating game images, sound and level designing within GameMaker. You will need GameMaker Studio You will require Free/Standard, Professional or Master edition of GameMaker Studio. Any version should work but this course be using version 1.4. Users of GameMaker Studio 2.0 can also follow along. There’s a section that briefly highlights the differences between GameMaker Studio 1.4 and 2.0 for those completely new to both applications. Who this book is for This book is for anyone ready to learn how to make games with no prior experience.
