Mr Josep Borrell Vice-President of the European Commission High Representative of the Union for the CFSP Rue de la Loi 170 1000 Brussels Brussels, 16th April 2021 Dear Mr. High Representative; Mr Vice-President of the Commission: A delegation from the illegitimate National Assembly of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which emerged from the electoral farce organised on 6th December 2020 by the regime of Nicolás Maduro, recently paid a visit to Brussels and was officially received by the institution you lead. According to a statement you made on behalf of the European Union on 6th December, this spurious process took place in the absence of electoral conditions that could have guaranteed its credibility, without any respect for political pluralism, and in an atmosphere of persecution and disqualification of democratic leaders whose legitimate rights were curtailed. Your statement concludes that such circumstances could not consider this process credible, inclusive, and transparent and therefore the results did not represent the will of the Venezuelan people. That initial statement was confirmed on 6 January of this year by a new declaration, in similar terms to those expressed on 6 December, and by the conclusions of the Foreign Affairs Council of 25 January. These reiterated the lack of recognition of the electoral process and regretted the behaviour of the authorities of the Maduro regime, whose actions are preventing a solution to the serious crisis in Venezuela. We were surprised and gravely concerned to learn that on 14th April, at your request, senior officials of the European External Action Service received the aforementioned delegation, comprising Iris Varela, Pedro Carreño and Desirée Santos Amaral, at the EEAS headquarters.

  • Brussels, 27 March 2017 Dear Mr. Dijsselbloem, Earlier This Week We
Brussels, 27 March 2017 Dear Mr. Dijsselbloem, Earlier this week we have known the statements you have made to a communication media, which we consider unequivocally discriminatory and offensive against several EU countries as well as offensive and sexist towards women. Shortly after the publication of your statements, you had the opportunity to rectify at the European Parliament, but you avoided doing so. On the contrary, instead of apologizing, you have said that the problem is that we do not understand the direct style of speech known to Calvinist culture. In our opinion, Calvinist culture has nothing to do with disdain for other people. This is the reason why we are again asking you - as representatives of European citizens, who have chosen us directly - to reflect and to rectify. Your statements attack one of the most important values that underpin our European Union: equality. In the last six decades, we have all managed together, Mr Dijsselbloem, to materialize a dream that once seemed unthinkable: that Europeans should be equal in opportunities, rights and obligations. The EU is not just rules, meetings and political decisions. What supports all of this, what gives meaning to the EU, are our common values, and equality as the most important one. Therefore, respecting these values should be the first obligation for any European leader, Mr Dijsselbloem. This includes assuming that European citizens, like any human being, are all equally respectable, regardless of our gender and our country of origin or residence. Attacking a certain group of countries as you have done is attacking each one of the EU countries.

European Parliament 2014-2019 Committee on Budgets 2016/0225(COD) 25.4.2017 OPINION of the Committee on Budgets for the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a Union Resettlement Framework and amending Regulation (EU) No 516/2014 of the European Parliament and the Council (COM(2016)0468 – C8-0325/2016 – 2016/0225(COD)) Rapporteur: Gérard Deprez AD\1124089EN.docx PE601.018v02-00 EN United in diversity EN PA_Legam PE601.018v02-00 2/11 AD\1124089EN.docx EN SHORT JUSTIFICATION The rapporteur is of the opinion that the EU is in urgent need of an integrated, sustainable migration policy, based on solidarity and fair burden-sharing between all Member States. He believes that the creation of legal ways to seek refuge in Europe could avoid tragic deaths in the Mediterranean Sea and break down the business model of migrant smugglers. The rapporteur supports linking the proposed recast of the ‘Dublin regulation’1 to the present proposal, so that the number of resettled persons is added to the number of applications for international protection for the purpose of calculating the corrective allocation mechanism. The rapporteur is also in favour of establishing a link with the recast Eurodac regulation2 so that data on resettled persons will be stored in the Eurodac system. In terms of its budgetary implications, despite the absence of a well-defined quota of persons to be resettled in the proposal, the rapporteur wishes that these resettlement plans should be ambitious and that the means necessary for their implementation be made available.

Through a glass darkly 1 Briefing note June 2014 The new European Parliament: what to expect From 22 to 25 May 2014, Europeans went to the polls. Many of them went to express their dissatisfaction. Although the majority of the incoming 751 MEPs remain broadly supportive of the EU, both they and those who need to engage with the European Parliament will have to adapt to the increased power of a disparate anti-EU and anti- establishment minority over the next five years. This briefing provides an overview of the election results* at the EU level and what happens next, further analysis on results in France, Germany, Greece and the UK, a look at the key outgoing and incoming MEPs, and an examination of the selection procedures for the new leaders of the European Commission, European Parliament and European Council. The election results The election saw a marked rise, of about 10%, in the number of MEPs elected from anti-EU and anti-establishment parties from both ends of the political spectrum. They won around 230, or 31%, of the 751 seats, compared to 164, or 21%, of the 766 seats in 2009. What remains to be seen is whether the newly -elected MEPs will join existing, or form new, political groups in the Parliament (see below for more information on the importance of political groups and how they are formed). Despite their decreased numbers, the pro-Europeans remain the dominant force in the European Parliament. Their four groups – the centre-right, the centre-left, the liberals and the greens – won 521, or 69%, of the 751 available seats.

  • Closer Cooperation Between the Afd and the 'Pegida' Movement Could
Closer cooperation between the AfD and the ‘Pegida’ movement could reshape the German right blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2015/01/05/closer-cooperation-between-the-afd-and-the-pegida-movement-could-reshape-the-german-right/ 05/01/2015 A number of rallies calling for greater restrictions on immigration have been held in Germany by the ‘Pegida’ movement (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the West). Julian M Hoerner writes on the link between the movement and the anti-euro Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, led by Bernd Lucke. He argues that with the AfD appearing to be broadly supportive of Pegida, an alliance between the two groups could reshape the right of the German party system. In post-War Germany, it was once taken for granted that there could be no party to the right of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) which respected the German constitution, the Grundgesetz. This perceived wisdom has recently been called into question with the electoral success of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). The party has the appearance of being populist and anti-euro, but is led by respectable figures from the conservative German establishment, many of them academics. However, the recent rapprochement of the party to a new anti-Islam, anti-immigration movement called ‘Pegida’ (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the West) calls the party’s liberal credentials into questions. The AfD and Pegida share the same regional strongholds and their supporters are united by unease with recent changes in German society. The ‘black box’ of the Pegida movement, with its diverse membership, might prove to be a link between the AfD and more radical and extremist elements, especially in Eastern Germany.
