The KAS Office USA takes a first look, in a series of five country reports. This report deals with climate and energy challenges. The White House website promises “swift action to tackle the climate emergency” and a “clean energy revolution”. Key Policy Goals The Biden-Harris administration doesn’t make it a secret that the fight against climate change is on top of the to-do-list. Climate is prominently listed on the White House website as one of seven top policy priorities. It states: “President Biden will take swift action to tackle the climate emergency. The Biden administration will ensure we meet the demands of science, while empowering American workers and businesses to lead a clean energy revolution.”1 The Biden administration takes a decidedly different approach to energy use and the impact of rising temperatures on the environment than its predecessor. After four years of the Trump administration denying scientific findings about climate change, Biden has pledged to follow science and involve the entire federal government in the fight against climate change. By creating inter-agency working groups and a National Climate Task Force, Biden wants to ensure that his policies for the production of clean energy and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, are not limited to single agencies but will be implemented throughout the federal government. During his campaign, Biden promised to reach a goal of net-zero emissions across the economy before 2050, and to eliminate pollution caused by fossil fuel in electricity production by 2035.

There were children of Caribbean immigrants who commuted by bus or subway from a historically Black neighborhood. There were Anglophones, Francophones and kids from Chinatown. And then there was Kamala Harris, an extroverted American teenager who had moved to Montreal from California at age 12, dreamed of becoming a lawyer and liked dancing to Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. Thrown into one of Montreal’s most diverse public high schools, the young Ms. Harris — whose father was from Jamaica and mother from India — identified as African-American, her friends from high school recalled. At the same time, they said, she deftly navigated the competing racial and social divisions at the school. “In high school, you were either in the white or the Black group,” said Wanda Kagan, her best friend from Westmount High School, who had a white mother and an African-American father. “We didn’t fit exactly into either, so we made ourselves fit into both.” The future senator spent her formative adolescent years in a multicultural environment typical of many Canadian public schools.     Speaker Biographies Ope Adebanjo ’20, Student, Harvard Law School Ope Adebanjo is a second year JD Candidate at Harvard Law School. She graduated from Harvard College in 2015 and majored in Comparative Literature and African Studies, with a minor in Sociology and a citation in Yoruba. Ope worked as an operations supervisor at McMaster-Carr Supply Company in Atlanta GA, managing teams of e-commerce and sales representatives and managing warehouse projects and operations during her time before law school. She also has her Masters in International Business from J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. As a HLS student, Ope is interested in intellectual property law and international business law with a focus on the intersection of policy and technology. Kendra Albert ’16, Clinical Instructional Fellow, Cyberlaw Clinic, Harvard Law School Kendra is a clinical instructional fellow at the Cyberlaw Clinic at Harvard Law School, where they teach students how to practice law by working with pro bono clients. Previously, they were an associate at Zeitgeist Law PC, a boutique technology law firm in San Francisco, and a research associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. Kendra’s scholarship and academic work touches on diverse issues, from online harassment to linkrot to video game preservation. They hold a JD cum laude from Harvard Law School and a bachelor’s degree in lighting design and history from Carnegie Mellon University. Real Men Advance, Real Women Retreat: Stand Your Ground, Battered Women's Syndrome, and Violence as Male Privilege MARY ANNE FRANKS* Proponents of Stand Your Ground laws cynically exploit the image of vulnerable women to defend expansions of self-defense doctrine, despite the fact that such laws actually reinforce and exacerbate existing gender divides in self-defense law that disproportionately harm women. The appropriationof women's right to self-defense by Stand Your Ground supporters masks the law's hostility toward women's use of force and obscures the real achievement of such legislation: the normalizationand promotion of (often white) male violence in an ever-expanding variety of scenarios.
