Première femme noire et d'origine indienne à briguer ce poste, elle deviendra la première femme vice- présidente des États-Unis si Joe Biden remporte l'élection contre Donald Trump le 3 novembre. Et dans ce pays où les conjoints et enfants occupent un rôle central dans les campagnes électorales, sa famille ne coche aucune case traditionnelle. Mais elle a cherché à présenter un front uni et aimant mercredi. Son choix d’“invitées” au jour de sa nomination historique, pendant le centenaire du droit des votes des Américaines, l'a dit clairement : honneur aux femmes et à la famille. Dans toutes ses variantes. “Kamala Harris est ma tante, ma belle-mère, ma grande sœur” : les voix se sont enchaînées dans un montage vidéo, montrant trois femmes centrales dans sa vie : sa sœur Maya Harris, ancienne de la campagne de Hillary Clinton en 2016, qui avait dirigé la candidature malheureuse de Kamala Harris à la primaire démocrate en 2019. Sa nièce Meena Harris, avocate et auteure d'un livre pour enfants centré sur la vie de Maya et Kamala Harris. Et Ella Emhoff, fille de son époux depuis 2014, Douglas Emhoff. Dans son discours, elle a longuement évoqué la mémoire de sa mère, Shyamala Gopalan, chercheuse indienne spécialisée dans la lutte contre le cancer, arrivée à l'université de Berkley, en Californie, à l'âge de 19 ans. Elle avait alors rencontré son père, Donald Harris, étudiant en économie venu de Jamaïque. Ils s'étaient séparés quand elle avait cinq ans et sa mère l'avait élevée, seule, avec sa sœur. “Je sais qu'elle me regarde depuis là-haut”, a déclaré la sénatrice et ex-procureure générale de Californie. “La famille est tout pour moi”, avait-elle déclaré lors de son premier discours officiel de colistière, le 12 août. C'est une amie qui l'avait présentée à Douglas Emhoff, avocat, aujourd'hui âgé comme elle de 55 ans et qui vient de prendre un congé sabbatique pour soutenir sa campagne. “Je suis si fier de toi. Tu as marqué l'histoire ce soir”, a-t-il tweeté mercredi. Très présent sur le réseau social, il offre parfois une plongée dans le quotidien de la candidate. Comme en la montrant cette semaine sur le canapé regardant la convention, vêtue d'un sweatshirt au nom de son université Howard, fondée à Washington pour accueillir les étudiants afro-américains en pleine ségrégation. “J'ai eu beaucoup de titres dans ma carrière et ‘vice-présidente’ sera formidable, mais ‘Momala’ sera toujours celui qui entre tous aura le plus de valeur”, avait-elle affirmé le 12 août. La sénatrice a confié que les deux enfants de son époux, Ella et Cole Emhoff, n'aimaient pas, comme elle, le terme de “belle-mère” et avaient donc vite opté à la place pour “Momala”. “Ils n'auraient pas pu être plus accueillants”, racontait-elle au magazine Elle en mai 2019. “Pour mon frère et moi, tu seras toujours Momala, la meilleure belle-mère du monde”, affirmait Ella Emhoff dans la vidéo mercredi soir. Une bonne entente qu'elle a aussi avec leur mère et ex-partenaire de son mari, Kerstin Emhoff. “Une mère incroyable” et une “grande amie”, avait confié Kamala Harris au magazine Elle en mai 2019. “Nous sommes une famille très moderne”, ajoutait-elle dans les pages de People cette semaine. Sur son compte Twitter, Kerstin Emhoff a mis une vidéo pro-Kamala Harris à l'honneur et multiplie les messages et retweets l'encourageant. For this, a content analysis was carried out in order to detect: a) actors who intervened in the information; b) topics covered; c) racial identification of the candidate; and, d) the presence of political frames versus personal frames. N=329 news items were selected from 10 traditional newspaper websites and 10 digital native media websites. It was found that the news focused mainly on political frames and political issues of the candidate; such behavior was more conclusive in the articles published in native digital media than in traditional media. Nonetheless, the study concludes that Harris’ coverage was largely based on her race-gender intersectionality and her political ties to other men.
