Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in the EU, but it is also the wealthiest per capita. Following Italy and Latvia, Luxembourg is the third in this Presidency Trio, and will be the second full Presidency to work with the new Commission headed by compatriot and former Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker. Luxembourg is the seat of several major institutions such as the European Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank, and the Court of Auditors. Attitude toward the EU Luxembourg is one of the six founding members of the European Union and has historically played a key role in its formation.

Rétrospective 2015 CHÈRES DUDELANGEOISES, CHERS DUDELANGEOIS, Après une année entière passée en tant que bourgmestre de notre ville, un petit bilan s’impose. Les projets entamés ont été poursuivis, voire achevés avec succès, et Dudelange continue son développement. En ayant toujours à l’esprit le bien-être et la qualité de vie qui définissent le vivre ensemble dans notre ville. Et c’est pourquoi nous avons opté pour la participation citoyenne, qui nous tient à cœur, dans l’élaboration du nouveau Plan d’Aménagement Général (PAG) : impliquer les habitants, les inviter à s’exprimer. Être au plus proche des citoyens, c’était aussi l’objectif de la permanence hebdomadaire du collège des bourgmestre et échevins qui a accueilli entre février et novembre une centaine de citoyens. Le vivre ensemble aussi dans le choix de l’aménagement «shared space» (espace partagé) qui donnera au centre-ville de Dudelange un visage plus convivial, tout comme le réaménagement de la place à côté de l’église et le projet Am Duerf, ses commerces et sa place piétonne. Sans oublier l’un des projets majeurs de ces 2 dernières années : le nouveau Centre sportif René Hartmann et ses équipements parmi les plus modernes et les plus performants du pays. Finalement, le bien-être qui préside au destin de notre ville fait tout logiquement aussi l’objet de notre nouvelle campagne : « Diddeleng, liewe wéi am Süden – Dudelange, on dirait le sud » qui souligne une fois encore que c’est bien là ce qui caractérise notre ville et façonne son identité et celle de ses habitants.

India & Luxembourg Bilateral
INDIA- LUXEMBOURG BILATERAL BRIEF India and Luxembourg enjoy warm and friendly relations characterized by a high degree of mutual understanding and cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels. The diplomatic relations between India and Luxembourg were established in 1948. Luxembourg opened its Embassy in New Delhi in February 2002 which is one of its five embassies in Asia. Luxembourg also has three Honorary Consulates in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. HIGH-LEVEL VISITS FROM INDIA External Affairs Minister, Smt. Sushma Swaraj visited Luxembourg from 19-20 June 2018. It was the first ever visit to Luxembourg by an External Affairs Minister. During the visit, EAM called on the Grand Duke of Luxembourg His Royal Highness Henri Albert Gabriel Félix Marie Guillaume and H.E. Mr. Xavier Bettel, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg. EAM held talks with her counterpart, Mr. Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs to review India- Luxembourg bilateral relations and discuss regional and global issues. During the visit, EAM also interacted with the Indian community at the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM) in Luxembourg. Recent high Level visits from India to Luxembourg include those of Minister of State for External Affairs Gen. (Retd) Dr. V. K. Singh who led the Indian delegation to the 12th Asia- Europe Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Luxembourg from November 4-7, 2015. During the visit, Hon’ble Minister of State called on Luxembourgian Foreign Minister, Mr. Jean Asselborn. Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Prakash Javadekar visited Luxembourg to attend the Major Economies Forum from July 18-19, 2015.

European Journal of Political Research Political Data Yearbook 0: 1–10, 2019 1 doi: 10.1111/2047-8852.12244 Luxembourg: Political developments and data in 2018 RAPHAËL KIES,1 PATRICK DUMONT2 &DANSCHMIT1 1University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg; 2Australian National University, Australia Introduction The 2018 political year was dominated by the parliamentary elections on 14 October 2018. The general expectation was that the Christian Democrats (CSV), who had been in opposition since 2013, would win the election and return to government. In the end, they lost votes and the incumbent coalition of Liberals (DP), Social Democrats (LSAP) and Greens (Déi Gréng) could maintain its majority, allowing the three parties to continue for a second term. These elections also led to the rise of the Pirate Party. On the legislative front, several bills on the government’s legislative agenda were voted on by Parliament. Election report Parliamentary elections took place on 14 October 2018 at the end of the first term with the CSV in opposition since 1979. After suffering losses at the 2013 election (Dumont & Kies 2014), polls suggested that the CSV would win votes and that no coalition without the party would be possible. Final polls in June 2018 indicated that due to a collapse in socialist and liberal votes, the incumbent coalition would no longer have a majority in Parliament, largely due to a CSV that would win back the seats lost in 2013, and that the preferred coalition option was CSV–Greens, given the expected good results for the smallest of the coalition parties. Another party that was expected to benefit from the election, following the electoral successes of populist parties in neighbouring countries, was the Democratic Reform Party (ADR) with its conservative and sovereigntist programme centred around the defence of national identity and language.

Plans to introduce EU-wide rules for collecting and processing air Passenger Name Record (PNR) data are on the Civil Liberties Committee agenda. Members will vote on a wide range of amendments, including on which flights should be included, the data retention period, and several other data protection provisions. There will be a press conference with the rapporteur after the vote. (Wednesday) Relocating asylum seekers. The emergency mechanism for relocating asylum seekers Agenda and refugees within the EU, as proposed by the Commission in May to distribute 40,000 from Greece and Italy to other EU member states over the next two years, will be debated and put to a vote in the Civil Liberties Committee. Parliament must be consulted on this emergency scheme, and will have co-decision powers over a future permanent one. Most Members are likely to reiterate Parliament’s recent argument that the mechanism should be binding, not voluntary, and that more people will have to be relocated. (Thursday) Taxation. Finance ministers from France, Germany, Italy and Spain as well as Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs Pierre Moscovici, and ECOFIN Council President Pierre Gramegna will come to Parliament to debate current and future taxation policy plans with Members of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and Special Committee on Tax Rulings. However, the meeting format might change due to the special summit on Greece to be held on Sunday. (Monday) Air quality. Stricter and compulsory limits on emissions of air pollutants such as sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), will be voted by the Environment and Public Health Committee.

The question referenced articles by Luxembourg Times and Lëtzebuerger Land which mentioned rumours that Luxembourg is being considered as a host for the SPV, a mechanism that would enable EU countries to circumvent US sanctions on Iran and continue trading with it normally. In his parliamentary question, Kartheiser asked, amongst other things, whether it is true that Luxembourg has been put under pressure by EU countries to host the SPV, and what the economic damage Luxembourg endures as a result of the US withdrawing from the deal.

Embassy of India Brussels India-Luxembourg Bilateral Relations India and Luxembourg enjoy warm, close and friendly ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1948. Bilateral relations between India and Luxembourg are founded on their shared commitment to the Rule of Law and democratic values, appreciation of each other’s concerns and commonality of views on major bilateral and multilateral issues. Luxembourg opened its Embassy in Delhi in 2002 and has Honorary Consulates in Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. Political Relations: From India, Rashtrapatiji Shri K.R. Narayanan paid a State visit to Luxembourg in 1998. Minister of State for External Affairs Gen. (Retd) Dr. V. K. Singh led the Indian delegation to the 12th Asia-Europe Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Luxembourg from 4-7 November 2015. Earlier, Minister of State for External Affairs Smt. Preneet Kaur, visited Luxembourg on 18 April, 2012. An Indian delegation led by Minister for Steel, Chaudhary Birender Singh visited Luxembourg from 28-29 August 2016. Minister of State (IC) for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Prakash Javadekar visited Luxembourg to attend the Major Economies Forum from 18-19 July 2015. From Luxembourg, the then Grand Duke Jean (father of the incumbent Grand Duke Henri) visited India in March 1983 along with the Grand Duchess. The incumbent Grand Duke Henri led an economic delegation to India in May 1995 as the then Crown Prince. Foreign Minister of Luxembourg Mr. Jean Asselborn paid an official visit to India in March 2015 and held bilateral consultations with EAM. Mr. Asselborn also attended the 11th ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in New Delhi in November 2013.
