Riverdance Riverdance originated in an annual ritual called the which featured one act from each nation in Europe. With the glittering evening to be held in in 1994, producer asked composer to create a piece which would fill the seven-minute lapse when the judges made their decision. Whelan composed a variation on an act crafted for performance in the Irish Pavilion at the 1992 Seville World’s Fair. The reaction to the brief piece, a triumph of rhythm and percussion, was electric. Whelan’s folk-based tunes topped the music charts and stayed there for 18 weeks. Both Doherty and Dublin were soon demanding a full concert-length version of Riverdance. It was performed first in Dublin, then in London and New York, and there are now troupes continuously touring the world. Riverdance is a different kind of show to the other favourite, Lord of the Dance. It relies on moods and forms of traditional Irish, Spanish, and eastern European music. It is intended to be played by a dance company and a few soloists. The star of Lord of the Dance, , used to be the star of Riverdance, but quit the show in 1995 during a contract dispute and formed his own dance troupe. Now in its 22nd phenomenal year, Riverdance has touched the hearts of some 25 million people around the world. In 2013, a record was set when a line of 1,693 dancers from 44 countries danced to Riverdance on a bridge over Dublin’s River Liffey. Come and enjoy Riverdance when it triumphantly returns to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver.
